Chapter 5: Dating Is Supposed To Be Fun (2)

“Just for a little bit… Then I’ll give it back to you after dinner…” Evelyn walked closer to her brother as if she was ready to attack him if need be to take his shirt off.
“No, way in Hell…” Evan said as he glanced at the door, he was some distance away and nearly pressed against the wall. He could make a run for it but he did risk running into his mother on his way out.
“I’ll buy you a LPA figurine if you lend me your shirt now…” Evelyn said as she stood there and crossed her hands, waiting for the other’s response.
“You being serious?” Evan asked as he looked at his sister wide eyed.
“I’m a woman of my word.” Evelyn said as she nodded her head then extended her hand. “Deal?”
“Deal.” Evan said as he took off his shirt and handed it to the woman. “I want the limited edition MC figurine…” He said as he looked away from his sister as she changed her shirt into his.
“Sure, sure whatever…” Evelyn replied, she had a job from home, translating articles from English to French and vise versa, so she earned quite a bit for her age. Since she didn’t go out much either, she had a lot of disposable income, to her a figurine or two wasn’t anything special. “Damn this stinks of sweat.”
“What did you expect?” Evan asked as if it was obvious. Both of them headed downstairs after even grabbed a new shirt for himself, Evelyn went into the kitchen to help her father with the broken sink and Evan went to his mother to help with cooking…
“Hey darling, I didn’t know you were here, I went to your room before but you weren’t there. I just assumed you were out with your friends.” The mother said as she turned to her son who began pealing the vegetables.
“Oh, I was in the bathroom.” Evan replied with a light smile on his face. “Did you need something?” he asked.
“I was going to ask you to help me with dinner, but I guess you came here anyways. Also I was thinking all four of us could go somewhere like the amusement park next weekend. How does that sound?” She asked.
“Sounds awesome!” Evan said in an excited voice. “We haven’t been to the park in a long while.” He said as his eyes sparkled like a little kid’s.
“I know, right! It’s been nearly a year since the last time!” The mother said as her eyes sparkled in quite the same fashion. It was more than obvious who Evan was more similar to from his two parents.
Likewise, Evelyn was similar to her father who was a handyman. She too was great at things that required problem solving and she had some great engineering knowledge of every day items and even some pluming knowledge.
“We just had to hit the reset button here…” Evelyn said as she got up from under the sink. The garbage disposal needed to be reset to function properly again. It was an easy fix but her father’s eyesight wasn’t as good as it was once upon a time so he did need the help.
“My little girl, I wonder what I’d do without you.” The father said as he smiled and tapped the girl’s shoulder. “I can’t even get myself to bend over to get under the sink much less find where the damn button was…”
“You shouldn’t be doing things like that anyways dad…” Evelyn said as she washed her hands. Her father was a handyman before but he worked at his wife’s company at the moment. He would overview deliveries and visit branches of the coffee shops that the woman owns.
“What kind of man would I be if I didn’t at least fix something like this? Well I didn’t quite fix it in the end but you get it, right dear?” The father said with a smile on his face.
“Yeah, yeah.” Evelyn agreed as she began setting the table. “Don’t you think you should be helping mom with dinner? You know how she cooks…” She asked in a low whisper so that the others wouldn’t hear her.
“Ah… you’re right… I’ll go check up on things…” The man said as he headed to his wife. His wife was so to speak a very bad cook, she couldn’t cook to save her life, but he was a good cook and usually prepared meals. However this time his wife had been determined to make dinner and he didn’t wish to stop or discourage her so he let it happen.
“Hello my love… how are things coming along?” He asked as he peeked into the kitchen. A familiar scent filled his nostrils, in the bad sense of the word. He could recognize the scent but what he saw being cooked in the frying pan didn’t seem to resemble food exactly.
“It’s going great! Evan is helping me.” The woman said as she shook the frying pan, inside was something with a particularly brownish to blackish color. Whatever it was it seemed to be seriously overcooked.
“I see…” The man replied as he stepped closer to take a look. ‘Why did she ask Evan for help and not Evelyn? Out of anyone that could of made dinner it had to be the two people with damaged taste buds…’ He thought to himself. The main issue was that neither the mother nor the son realized their cooking was bad. Both of them would casually eat what they’ve made as if it was nothing. While the father and daughter who actually had good sense of taste, knew that the food was inedible at best but both of them were far too kind to speak of the matter and risk anyone feeling bad.
“I smell something being cooked, is it ready yet?” Evelyn asked as she entered the kitchen. ‘Oh God… I’m not sure if I’ll be able to stomach this dinner…’ She thought to herself.
“It will be in a second! Both of you prepare the table, alright?” The mother said with a smile on her face as she put some sauce like thing over the fried vegetables or the burnt remains of them at least…
