Ivi
I was in the seventh heaven.
I was officially given a job - hired by Loren to help the newly recruited wolves. My job was to help them get used to their new life and get what they needed.
Gideon's pack was huge. Perhaps this was due to the fact that he accepted about five new members each day. It was not necessary to go through any special procedure, it was enough that the rogues did not hurt anyone from the pack and were willing to join.
It was harder to accept wolves from other packs though because Gideon wanted to know the reason for their desire to change their own. I could see his point now.
Life here was so...lively.
I wasn't lying when I told him I like the atmosphere here. Noisy, energetic, hurried. I felt like I was in the city among the people, only now I was among my own - among werewolves.
As the number of new entrants was large, a helper like me needed to watch over a few wolves at the same time.
There was only one werewolf who wasn't accepted yet and that was the one who was kept in the cells for a while. I chose to help him because he was in almost the same situation as me. His life here as a full member of the pack was in question.
Today I was going to meet him and see what he is like. Yesterday he was taken out of his cell for the first time, as he is no longer considered dangerous and today he will be part of the group of newly accepted wolves for a tour around the territory.
I mind-linked Joy, who was showing them around and she told me where to find them. As I approached the group and Joy saw me, she turned to the others and spoke.
"And guys, that's Ivi. She's a help agent and will be helping some of you with organizing your life here as far as you need it. I think she's here now because of you, Emmet."
She looked at one of the males and this time he wasn't wearing a cape. He was ordinary looking, wearing black pants and a black blouse with some print. His hair was slightly long and curly, reaching around his ears. He looked a little older than me. Maybe around thirty years old.
He was looking at me warily as if worried about something. I smiled to predispose him, but before I could speak, he began to look around in panic, and seconds later cried out. "Run. Vampires." I looked at him confused like the rest of the guys and the first vampire strike. The hideous creature gritted its teeth and claws in one of the new werewolves and we all turned in our wolf forms. Like vultures, several vampires came down to our group and I saw several of the ex rogues disappearing between the trees.
Emery was enraged. We fight with one of the vampires like crazy. She managed to tear him apart fast. Joy mind-linked me to go back and I looked for a second in her direction. She was bleeding severely and two vampires has caught her and sunk their teeth at her already bare neck. I realized the real danger and when I looked around I found that most of the others had escaped. Only Emmet stood in the middle of the meadow, surrounded by four of the vampires. How had they managed to break through the border guards?
There was no one behind us and we could easily try to escape, but I couldn't leave anyone behind. Emery growled angrily at the vampires, who stood with their backs to us, and they turned and began to approach with wicked smiles. There was blood on their faces.
The next second a huge brown wolf jumped at the one in left and we attacked the other one.
I put all my hatred for vampires, all the bile I was hiding inside, and I didn't know when it was over, and Riven was growling at me, mind-linking me with his Alpha tone.
"I SAID ENOUGH!"
Emery pulled away from the vampire's body or whatever was left of it, her eyes glowing fiercely and her mouth full of blood.
Gideon turned in his human form and I did the same. I was fully naked in front of him again but my clothes were shed to pieces and there was nothing I could do about it. I looked at Emmet to avoid Gideon's furious look and made sure he was okay.
Joy was dead though. I looked away from her lifeless body, unable to believe that we had only been drinking coffee together this morning. A tear came out of my eyes, no matter how hard I tried to stop it.
"Get her body out of here." Gideon's voice was sharp and grim. "What the Hell happened to the guards?!"
"Alpha, Matt was announced dead when we were reported for vampires breaking the border, but now his body is missing."
I looked at Loren in surprise. Who needed the dead body of a werewolf?
"Get Ivi and Emmet to my office. Banish all the newly accepted wolves who were here but escaped, leaving these two alone. I want more of my warriors on the border. And check Matt's family. I want to speak with them later."
I looked at Loren's serious face. She nodded at Gideon and gestured for us to leave. Emmet quickly joined us and we turned in our wolf forms. Emery was restless and annoyed and her feelings quickly took over me. When we reached the pack house and entered Gideon's office, we all remained silent. Minutes later, Gideon joined us and took his seat on the opposite side.
"I want a detailed explanation of what had happened." His voice was quiet but sharp. He left no room for squabbling.
I licked my lips nervously and started first.
"I contacted Joy because I knew she was going to lead today's group. I wanted to meet Emmet because I was assigned as his help agent." I paused briefly to calm down and saw Gideon glancing at Loren at my last words. "I was just introducing myself when Emmet shouted that he had seen vampires and the first one attacked."
Gideon looked at the nervous male next to me. "When did you notice the vampires?"
"I saw movements, Alpha. I have a serious fear of vampires and it's kind of a habit of looking around all the time. I've had bad experiences with them. I've been vigilant ever since."
"What happened next?"
"Everything happened so fast. They killed our guide and some of the others ran away. I can't believe I survived."
"Ivy?"
"Two of them attacked Joy, I managed to handle one. When I was watching, four had surrounded Emmet. I approached to help him, and then you came, Alpha."
He stared at Emmet as if thinking about something.
"They killed Joy pretty fast, obviously. They tried to kill Ivi. They could have chased and caught some of the others. But they didn't. The thing I don't understand here, Emmet, is why they weren't in a hurry to kill you? Four vampires were ready to attack you, but they obviously had reason not to hurry. Why?"
I looked at Emmet and he was terribly worried. His eyes betrayed fear. I guess Gideon could be quite intimidating.
"Maybe it was a coincidence, Alpha. Maybe they view him as their toy. Their last victim. And they wanted to enjoy his fear." I tried to reason.
"I really don't know what could be the reason, Alpha." Emmet's trembling voice echoed in the room.
Gideon stared at him, then nodded at the door. "That was for now, Emmet. You can leave now." Emmet got up and walked slowly out of the room.
"Do you remember anything else, Ivi? Anything strange?"
"No. I don't think so."
"There's something about him that I don't like."
"I'll report if I notice anything in the coming days."
"You won't be helping him. They'll assign someone else."
"But ... That's my job..."
"Didn't you hear yourself? It could be dangerous to be around him, Ivy."
"So? Don't you think I can handle it? I assure you..."
"I'm not putting my best friend's sister in a potentially dangerous position."
"Excuse me but you told me yourself that I'm no longer Mason's sister here, Alpha."
"She has a point."
Gideon glared at Loren and I pleaded.
"Alpha, please, it may be a coincidence but what would he think if you suddenly change his help agent? I'm strong enough to take care of myself, plus I have Loren around me all the time."
That was quite the exaggeration. The last couple of days I barely saw her but If it would help... He kept frowning but at the end nodded with annoyance.
"Fine. But I want you to be cautious and If you notice something strange, I want you to report immediately."
He paused concentrating, staring at his desk, then turned to Loren.
"Matt's family's missing."
