Ivi
Days after that vampires' attack I was absolutely sure Emmet had nothing to do with it. He was such an innocent sweetheart.
It was still hard for me to swallow that we had lost Joy, and even harder for her family. Her father, one of the warriors, volunteered to be assigned as a guard to the border from which the vampires had managed to enter.
Loren insisted on me being extremely careful with the new members of the pack, as they were still unsure of how and why the border defense had cracked.
I was helping five new wolves now but the important thing was that Gideon has stopped accepting new members for a while.
Emmet and I really got along. He had many interesting stories about his previous life and his family's problems with the vampires. It turned out that his pack was attacked by vampires, he lost almost his entire family in the attack, and those who survived were later killed in the privatization of his pack by a neighbor. I could relate.
I can see the impact of these incidents on him. He was overly anxious when we were in the woods. He was quiet and didn't like attention. He seemed scared of his own shadow.
While we had lunch together, making plans for what to show him next, Tessa, one of Gideon's warriors came to us.
"You two are assigned to the training sessions starting from tomorrow. We want you on the field at exactly 9."
Wait. What?
"But ..."
"No buts, it's Alpha's orders."
And she left as abruptly as she came.
Yay, we're gonna be training. That was great. I looked at Emmet, who was pale as a sheet and was still looking after Tessa.
"Don't mind her. She's that rude with everybody." I didn't like her either.
He looked at me confused and waved.
"I don't want to train."
"But that's a good thing. It'll make your body and brain stronger."
"I'm good like that."
I frowned.
"Plus, it won't help me with the vampires. You can't beat them even if you don't stop training for days."
"I know. But it'd help you with other wolves. With rogues. Alpha has stopped accepting new members, but it's still full of already accepted and still unknown wolves."
"Being a newcomer doesn't make you dangerous." He looked at me offended and I laughed.
"I know. Don't get me wrong. The management thinks it's dangerous now. Those trespassing vampires could've come with someone's help." His eyes grew bigger and they were quickly filled with fear.
"You need to calm down. Everyone here is doing their best to make the pack a safe place. But it's better for us to be in great shape."
Later, when I returned to my temporary home, I found Dev waiting for me in front. I made coffee for both of us and we sat on the small porch. "So, how do you like the mysterious Emmet?"
"I don't find him mysterious. He's just a shy introvert. He's been through a lot because of vampires and that's why he's so worried all the time."
"There's something strange though. My dad told me they still can't confirm his story."
Her dad was the commander. "Why do they think they can find a way to confirm it? His pack has been wiped out."
"Yeah, but there should be some neighbors. And the one who privatized them should also exist."
"Your dad knows better than me but I just can't imagine how they'd be able to get this information. Like I imagine he'd call that Alpha and ask 'sorry, did you take over a pack recently' and that Alpha'll be happily cooperating."
We laughed and then sipped our coffees in silence for a while.
"Do you think Alpha will let you stay?"
"I hope so. I like it here."
"I know, right? My dad didn't like it when Alpha kept taking any rogue who'd come near our land but that's what got us out of the quagmire. Before that, when our Luna was here, things were different. "
"How so?"
So far, I've avoided asking about the past because usually, the pack members were sensitive when it comes to their Alpha and Luna, and I wasn't sure if I wouldn't offend Dev when asking. But now I was glad she opened the question because I was curious.
"Don't get me wrong. Alpha had done a great job before. If I could say now that our pack is as big as a small town, then in the past it was like a small village. Some would say cohesive, cozy. But it was so boring..."
I bit my lip and sipped my coffee, then asked her in my most casual tone possible.
"You like it more now?"
"Yep. I miss our Luna but now is better."
"What was she like?"
Dev smiled.
"She was gorgeous. Beautiful, sophisticated, like a member of the royal family. My father told me she's been picked by the Royal King himself. And then she and Alpha Gideon found out they're mates."
"Sounds romantic."
She continued dreamily.
"Yeah. Can you imagine? To be picked by the King himself and then to realize you're going to be mated to your destined mate. And they were so perfect together. Our Alpha adored her. He treated her like a queen."
"And what was she like as a Luna?"
"Perfect as in anything else."
"Wow, you're really a fan."
"And how could I not be? She was and still is our Luna. I wanted to be like her, you know? She was my idol." Dev was eighteen years old so it wasn't weird that she thought so. I wondered what part of the truth about what happened at Zyier's Castle they knew. Had Gideon told them what had happened and that she didn't want to come back with him? And I wondered what she was doing now that Zyier was dead?
"I wonder what happened. I asked my father many times but he won't say a thing. They just told us she can't return to the pack and that was it."
"Maybe it's for the better." I sipped my coffee, feeling guilty as I watched her gape in disbelief.
"How could be a good thing for us to lose our Luna?!"
"Relax, If there's no way back, your Alpha still has his second chance."
"But she was perfect. And he loved her. We can all see how painful it is for him to be without her. He isn't the same. Alpha is constantly frowning and he's much more...cold with us than he was before. He used to be so friendly and kind. Always smiling. He's like a different male now. He needs Luna Eloise. Only she can make him happy."
"Okay... Maybe we should change the subject?" "No, I'm sorry. I should go."
"Where? It's almost evening. Please, stay a little longer. I promise I will say only good things for your Luna!"
She rolled her eyes but kept going. "I have something to do. I'll see you tomorrow, Ivy!"
I finished my coffee, enjoying the silence. I knew Loren's opinion of the ex Luna. And now Dev's opinion. How could they have such polar views about her? I left the cup in the sink and got ready for our evening run.
Good or not, Eloise no longer mattered.
