Fuck. When Van, my Gamma, told me that my father had arrived, I regretted not leaving earlier. We had a trip ahead related to my business in Florida, but I decided to postpone it because of the latest events. Now I would have been thousands of miles away from everything here and breathe easily.
When my father gave me this small territory so far away from his Kingdom years ago, I was terribly pleased. I created the West Mount pack in a very wooded area in Meine and even now I thought it was the right solution. We had increased the territory several times in the last year alone, and yet our borders were far from human-populated areas.
But you can't completely escape your past, no matter how far you go.
When we reached the headquarters, I turned in my human form and went straight to my office. I knew my father hadn't come to just say hi. He would get to the point right away.
I nodded to Don and Finn, they both had a lot of work to do these days and walked into the office. My father was standing by the window, but he turned to face me immediately. He was a male who always looked serious. He wouldn't let anyone see him smile. At least I had never seen him like that.
I walked around the desk and waited for him to sit against me before I took my place.
"I hear things." I raised my eyebrows and waited for him to continue. "I've heard you've been acting weird. Everyone says you're different and not in a good way, son. I'm concerned."
"Well, it wasn't exactly my best year, so everyone must be right. I'm not the same anymore. But that's a good thing. You've always said I should be more ambitious, aggressive, and uncompromising. I am now."
His eyes lit up and I knew exactly what was coming.
"Then what are you waiting for? Take what's yours."
"If you came to keep me busy with your nonsense about the throne, you better go. Once again, I'm not going to change my mind." "Gideon, I have a serious suspicion that the bastard is up to something. No wonder Levon is part of his business. I'm pretty sure you're his target. Get us out of all our worries and take your responsibility at last."
Same thing every time. That bastard was the father of Levon's mother. When my mother, Queen Luna, died, my father met his second chance mate and Levon was the result. From the very beginning, my father and the father of his mate were in a bad relationship. When his mother died, Levon's grandfather became his adviser. And when Levon began a relationship with a vampire, his grandfather was the only one who supported him. I knew the grandfather was dangerous, even though I didn't know him and had never seen him, but the war between them caused me constant headaches. I was sick of their competition for supremacy.
"The only responsibility I have is to my own pack, and as you can see, I'm fulfilling it."
He stared at me.
"What about your mate, Gideon? Don't you have responsibility for Eloise?"
"My personal life is out of the question."
"But you must take her back..."
"Father, is not your business..."
"The Hell is not. She's the daughter of my best friend. What am I supposed to say to him? My son was unable to protect your daughter, his mate, and on top of that, he won't take her back? Is it her fault that she had been abducted?"
My nerves were stretched to the limit, and before I knew it, my fist shook the desk.
"WHAT DID YOU NOT UNDERSTAND? For the last time, father, stay out of my personal life! Now, If you don't mind, I have work to do!" I tried to calm down but my blood was boiling. "Fine. I'm leaving now."
I stood and looked him in the eyes waiting for him to go.
"But I'm doing it because you're clearly not in the mood for a serious talk. Eventually, you'll have to bear the consequences of your decisions, Gideon. No matter whether you want to or not." And he left the room.
I mind-linked Loren because I had something to discuss with her. And because she was one of the few whose presence hasn't been on my nerves lately. She came in, looking absently as if talking to someone. I waited for her to end her mind conversation, but minutes later she still seemed thoughtful.
"What is it?" She looked at me absently. "Oh, nothing. I'm trying to help a friend."
I glanced at her, knowing that this friend must be Ivy.
"Say no more."
When minutes later Finn entered my office, I didn't see the mischievous sparks in Loren's eyes.
"Finn, you're still available, right?"
"Um, yes." He looked at her in surprise and I continued to fill out the paperwork.
"I have this friend. She's young and attractive and soon she'll be in heat."
I dropped the pen I was holding, looking at Loren in surprise. The latter had grinned in anticipation of Finn's answer.
"Sounds good. I'm interested. Who is it?"
Before she could say her name, I spit the words.
"Give her the pill."
I meant a drug that was invented in recent years by the best scientists in our community specifically to relieve the heat period.
Loren looked at me like I said something stupid. "I already offered it to her. She refused. She has never taken such a drug before, she has always found a partner."
"Oh, did I say I'm very much interested?" Finn's contented face was threatening my self-control and I clenched my jaw.
"You'll give her the pill and that's final."
Both Finn and Loren looked at me like I was crazy. And I probably was. I ran a hand through my hair tiredly and pointed to the door.
"Alpha, I can't order her to take the pill. It's a personal choice and always has been."
"Get out. Both of you."
What was happening to me? It was none of my business whether she would take the pill as a normal modern female or she was going to f**k someone's brain out.
I groaned. What was with her that was driving me so crazy? From the moment I saw her in Zyier's castle, I felt that attraction. I wanted her and that infuriated me.
When I saw her there, and knowing the story with Zyier that Mason had already told me, the first thing that came to my mind was that the vampire knows what he was doing. But she wasn't the only attractive she-wolf around here. And I'll be damn If I touch another woman of Zyier's.
