Chapter 5 I Am the Intern Charlotte

1196 Words
Gerald didn't come home all night. Mia and Bruce were angry with him and took turns calling him. Later, Gerald became impatient and turned off his phone. "What a brat!" Bruce almost smashed his phone because of his anger. "What should we do now? They just got married! Charlotte must be upset!" Mia regretted forcing her son to get married. It was Charlotte who suffered from this marriage. "If he doesn't come back, he'll lose the right to take over our company!" Mia was worried that Charlotte would overthink, so she kept talking to her until after ten o'clock. Gerald's cell phone was still off by that time, so she had to give up and told Charlotte to rest. "Charlotte, Gerald is such a jerk! But don't worry. I'll be by your side. I'll give him a lesson if he dares to come back!" Charlotte looked at Mia in front of her and was touched. Charlotte had grown up around Mia and was very close to her. Mia knew her father well, so Mia treated Charlotte like her own daughter. Charlotte had also thought of Mia as her mother. Charlotte had lost her mother when she was young, and her father died when she was ten. Fortunately, she had a grandfather who loved her. Though she also had an aunt, they were not close. On the contrary, Mia had been very good to her. "Mia, you don't have to force Gerald. He did nothing wrong," Charlotte comforted Mia. Charlotte didn't do anything wrong either. They had ended up in this situation because they had been forced to marry. A forced marriage would not have a happy ending. Mia's heart ached hearing Charlotte's words. It was initially a perfect chance for her to turn Charlotte, the sweet girl she liked, into her daughter-in-law. But, now Charlotte suffered from her marriage to Gerald! Charlotte stayed awake all night. Charlotte kept tossing and turning as she thought of what had happened in the past years since she met Gerald. He had treated her from sweet at first to aloof and then disgusted. Charlotte, of course, knew why: it was all because of Natalie. Early the following day, with a haggard face, she moved her luggage back to the guest room where she used to live before. When Mia saw her, she tried to stop Charlotte from doing that. "Gerald doesn't want to go home because of me, so I can't take over his room. It's okay for me to stay in the guest room." Charlotte replied thoughtfully. Although Charlotte felt happy to sleep in Gerald's bedroom, it made her sad that Gerald was not there for her. Besides, Gerald hated her to his guts! "Just wait a little longer. Maybe he'll be back in a little while, okay?" Mia hugged her and felt sorry for her. The guest room Charlotte slept in was decorated by Mia herself. The room was as luxurious and exquisite as a princess' bedroom. Most of the furniture was pink, and each was worth a lot. The closet was full of fashionable luxury clothes, handbags, and jewelry. However, Charlotte had always lived a simple life. So she still wore a T-shirt, jeans, and canvas shoes every day. Mia brought up her breakfast and said, "Charlotte, there is still a month left before college starts. So why don't you work in our company as an intern? Bruce will arrange that for you." "Sure, but I'm afraid I'll bring you trouble." "Not all. Charlotte, I know you are very capable, " said Mia. "Then it's a deal. You're coming with me to the office later," Bruce said. It was the plan Bruce and Mia had worked out last night. They both knew their son's character. They decided that since he didn't want to come back, they would bring Charlotte to the company and let her work beside him. They believed Gerald would fall in love with Charlotte if he saw her more. Gerald might not come home, but he would definitely go to the office. Evelyn grunted. "I'm still mad at you all for getting my grandson away from me. It won't be over if you can't get him home!" Mia pretended not to hear what Evelyn said. Since it was inappropriate for Charlotte to wear jeans to the office, Mia picked out a champagne-colored dress for her and kept complimenting her on her beautiful figure. They were told Gerald had been here for a while and was already in his office when they arrived. Bruce called Gerald's assistant Noel over and introduced Charlotte to him, telling him to guide Charlotte. Noel agreed, "Yes, Mr. Bruce." "It's her first day at work, and she may not adjust well. She is still young. Please take care of her and teach her." Noel was a shrewd and careful man, and that was why he had become Gerald's assistant. He looked at Charlotte and knew she was not ordinary. Otherwise, she couldn't have been brought to the office by Bruce himself. Bruce added as if he was afraid he hadn't made himself clear enough, "You can ask her to deliver papers to Gerald and bring him coffee." Noel nodded in agreement. Did Mr. Bruce mean I should let her stay by Mr. Gerald's side daily? He thought to himself. Noel surveyed Charlotte after Bruce left. Charlotte looked like a high school student to Noel. "Miss Anderson, nice to meet you." "Please call me Charlotte. Nice to meet you too." "Charlotte, how about I introduce you to Mr. Gerald now?" If Charlotte were someone else, Noel wouldn't have taken her to meet Gerald. But since Mr. Bruce said that Charlotte could freely enter Gerald's office, she must be somebody. "Huh? Do we have to do that?" "Yes, we have to. You are his new assistant, and he must know you." Know me? I think Gerald is dying to avoid me. Charlotte thought to herself. Charlotte also knew why Bruce had asked her to be an intern at his company. He expected her and Gerald to meet more. Charlotte began to look forward to what would happen when they met. After Noel knocked on the door, Gerald told him to come in. "Mr. Gerald, this is Charlotte Anderson. Mr. Bruce said she would be your personal assistant from now on." "Who?" Gerald asked without looking up, but he stopped writing. Charlotte walked up to him and stretched out her fair and delicate hand. "Good morning. Mr. Gerald. I am Charlotte Anderson. Nice to meet you." Gerald looked up and saw the slender arm with no jewelry in front of him. He looked further up and saw the face in his dreams last night. It had haunted him in his sleep! He stared at her grimly, knowing that she must be sent here by his parents! Ah, not only did you force me to marry her, but you made her my assistant? Gerald growled inwardly. Charlotte didn't mind that Gerald refused to shake hands with her. She withdrew her hand and smiled, "So I'll be working with you. You can call me if you need anything." Meeting her defiant gaze, he sneered.
