Chapter 4 Take the Pill

1214 Words
Charlotte had always known that Gerald was handsome and attractive. His features were delicate, and his body was incredibly perfect. She had been mesmerized by his appearance and overwhelmed by Gerald's charm. When Charlotte was seventeen years old, Gerald was twenty-one. She had confessed her love to him under a cherry tree. "Gerald, I like you!" It took her every piece of courage to do it. She had hesitated for a long time before she decided to tell Gerald about it. At the time, she thought Gerald was the most wonderful man in the world, and she still felt so later. However, he rejected her without even thinking about it. Staring at her coldly, he said with an indifferent tone, "I don't feel the same way! Stop wasting my time!" She had known he would refuse her before confessing her love. She did it to tell Gerald she could like him just as Natalie did. But she still didn't expect his coldness could hurt her that badly. Since this incident, they had become even more alienated. Gerald had still treated Charlotte unkindly though she had visited the Millers often. No matter how hard Mia and Bruce had tried to set Gerald and Charlotte up, Gerald had still behaved the same. Charlotte had known that Gerald thought she was a shameless woman who kept trying to seduce him. She reached out her hand and gently touched his face. Gerald grabbed her hand and shouted, "Charlotte!" He has indeed grown up, and his personality has become elusive. Alas, God knows what a sweet boy he once was! Charlotte thought to herself. "Gerald, we're married," she said calmly. He yelled at her, "I don't need you to remind me of this!" He would never have married her if his parents hadn't forced him to. But, he had made a deal with his parents. Charlotte looked at Gerald calmly and said, "Well, I'm glad you know that." No matter how much you hate me, we're married now. She thought. "Charlotte, don't think I will give in to you. I will divorce you when the time comes!" Charlotte mocked herself. She had expected that their marriage would not last long. Divorce is the only end. But when he mentioned it, Charlotte was still upset, mainly because they had just gotten married today. Seeing her face pale and breathing sharply, Gerald knew his words had made her scared. He could not help but sneer. He knew that no matter how scheming Charlotte was, she wouldn't calm down after hearing him say divorce. He released his grip on her wrist. Taking a box out of his pocket, Gerald slipped it into her hand, "Take the pill now!" "What is it?" Charlotte looked down at the pillbox in her hand, and the words on it made her pupils contract, her hands starting to shiver. Birth Control! Gerald eyed her sharply. Taking a deep breath, Charlotte unwrapped the box and threw the only pill into her mouth. Gerald handed her a bottle of water. He was not relieved until he saw her drink the pill down. He thought Charlotte was too scheming. He was afraid that she would spit it out. She squeezed the pillbox so tightly that she crushed it into a ball. "Don't worry. I don't want to have a baby now either," she said in a cold voice. She was still a student and didn't want to miss school. Gerald sneered and didn't say anything. He would never agree to her having a child for him, whether now or later. He swore to himself that he would never have s*x with Charlotte again! "This is my room! Get out, now!" When Gerald returned to his bedroom, he was shocked by the decorations. He looked at the roses and lit candles inside the room and felt outraged. When he saw the suitcase in the room, he knew exactly what was going on. He grimaced. Although my mother wants me to be with Charlotte, I won't sleep with her even if we get married. He thought. Charlotte stuffed the pillbox at the bottom of the trash can to keep it from Mia. Suddenly, she saw Gerald hurrying out of the room with a suitcase in his hand. The suitcase was not hers. Charlotte knew immediately what he was up to. When Evelyn Miller, Gerald's grandma, saw the suitcase Gerald was carrying, she guessed that he was leaving the house. She immediately approached him and asked, "Gerald, where are you going?" Gerald was not close to his parents, but he was close to his grandmother. "Grandma, I'm moving out. Please take care of yourself. I'll see you around," he said softly to Evelyn. He didn't want to say goodbye or even say a word to his parents. "Stop!" Bruce showed up. Gerald stopped without looking back. "I'm already married to her. Are you happy now? But she can't live in the same room with me! Looking at her makes me sick!" Charlotte didn't say anything and seemed used to Gerald's attitude. "You bastard! You can't move out. You just got married!" "This is what you made me do. You guys know I can't stay in the same room with her!" "Gerald, don't be so mean!" Mia got angry, too. "That's the way I talk to people. I don't care if you like it or not!" Gerald then left with his big suitcase. Seeing this, his grandma immediately ran out to catch up with him. The living room fell silent as they all heard a car starting its engine outside. Evelyn stood outside for a long time before returning. As soon as Evelyn came back, she scolded Mia and Bruce. "He's moving out! Is that what you want? You're his parents. Why are you doing this to him?! You know he likes Natalie! Why Charlotte then! For God's sake!" Evelyn was outraged. She felt pity for Gerald but was irritated by Bruce and Mia. Finally, Evelyn had no choice but to vent her anger at Charlotte. No one had the mood in the food anymore. Bruce and Mia comforted Evelyn for a long time. Charlotte had to go back to her room alone. As she entered the door, she immediately saw the marriage certificate torn on the floor. She bent down to pick it up, staring at it for a long time. She remembered her almost-torn marriage certificate, but fortunately, her grandpa had stopped her grandma from doing so. "They are a legally recognized couple. Even if you tear it up, they are still husband and wife." Charlotte thought about what her grandpa had said. But Charlotte didn't expect Gerald to rip up the marriage certificate. He angrily ripped their photo in half. Looking at the marriage certificate, Charlotte felt the urge to shed tears. "Charlotte, it's me." Mia knocked on the door. Charlotte immediately put the marriage certificate on the table and covered it with something. "Charlotte, I'm sorry that Gerald was way out of line. But, don't worry. I'll get him back soon," Mia said with guilt. "Don't bother. He moved out because of me." "It's not your fault. He went too far!" Mia was afraid Charlotte would overthink. It was supposed to be a happy day, but surprisingly, none felt delighted.
