Chapter 6 Get the Hell out of Here

1318 Words
Charlotte had been busy all morning. Gerald kept her busy because he deliberately made things difficult for her. He ordered her to photocopy many useless documents and wouldn't allow Noel to help. Since no one would tell her where the photocopying room was, she had to walk around the building for a long time with the heavy files in her arms. Gerald also asked her to answer the phone right after Charlotte returned with the copies. He didn't want her to stay by his side even for a while. When it was almost noon break, Gerald deliberately gave her a contract and said, "Copy this contract ten times... in handwriting!" The contract was more than ten pages long and had at least ten thousand words. Why did he ask me to copy the contract by hand when I had a computer and a printer? He must be deliberately making things difficult for me, dammit! He's such a childish bastard! She cursed him in her mind. Bruce was afraid that Gerald would bully Charlotte and asked her to join him for lunch in the office. Mia came too and brought a meal for four people. However, Gerald turned them down directly and asked Noel to order take-out for him. He did this to make a protest against his parents. His behavior was just childish and silly in Charlotte's eyes. "You've been busy this morning, haven't you? I heard that Gerald made you copy documents a lot. Are you OK?" Mia was most concerned about Charlotte. She was afraid that Gerald would quarrel with her at the office, so she kept thinking of Charlotte the whole morning. After preparing lunch for Charlotte, Bruce, and Gerald, she went straight to the office and stopped by to see Charlotte. "It's OK. Not tired at all. It's a good chance for me to learn new stuff." "If he dares to bully you, tell me," Mia said to Charlotte. Charlotte smiled and nodded but knew she wouldn't snitch on him to them. The Miller family was in enough turmoil because of her marriage, and she didn't want to worsen their relationship. Besides, she wasn't a person who liked to tattle. If she were mistreated, she would only console herself! Charlotte was very touched to see them being so protective of her. She was just grateful at first but then felt much closer to them. Charlotte found that Mia loved her and treated her as her own daughter. After having lunch, Charlotte went back to the office to continue her copying work. She did it carefully. Gerald saw Charlotte sitting by the window and writing in a serious attitude when he returned to the office after lunch. Noel was also surprised to see her being so serious. Gerald felt a little weird seeing that. Some strange feeling attacked his heart. But as always, he ignored every bit of emotions caused by Charlotte. "Who the hell let you in?" Gerald asked indifferently. Charlotte looked up at him and then immediately dropped her head to write. "Well, I won't make a sound and disturb you." "Who got the table and chair for her?!" Gerald asked Noel. Noel was taken aback by the frigid look in Gerald's eyes. He didn't see the table and chair here when he had just left. "Maybe the chairman told someone to put it here," he replied. He was right. It was Bruce who did ask someone to put the desk and chair here. He felt Gerald's office was too big for him, and Charlotte needed a workplace. So he had someone put a desk, a chair, and a computer by the window in Gerald's office. Gerald showed a sulking expression, and Noel knew immediately that Charlotte was screwed. Noel had worked for Gerald as an assistant for several years and knew best that he hated people bothering him in his office. He noticed that Gerald was giving Charlotte a hard time this morning. He soon realized that there must be something going on between them two. "Get her stuff out of here! I feel sick!" Charlotte gave him a calm look and didn't move at all. Noel was in a dilemma. He looked at Charlotte then and asked, "Charlotte, why don't you move to next door? There's plenty of room there. You can have privacy and do whatever you want." "No, thanks, I like it here." Charlotte deliberately acted against Gerald. I know he doesn't want to see me, but that's exactly why I am here! I'm going to confront him. I will show up in front of him every minute until he throws up. She thought. "Charlotte, pack your things and get the hell out of here!" "I'm just writing here, so I won't disturb you. Feel free to do whatever you want," she spoke as if this were her office. "Noel, what are you waiting for!" Gerald roared. Noel was shocked by his cold expression. He knew he couldn't persuade Gerald, so he had to talk nicely to Charlotte, who seemed much softer. To his surprise, Charlotte refused. They confronted each other, unwilling to give in, making the atmosphere hostile and awkward. Noel was stuck between the two and wished he could disappear now! "Noel, I'm your boss. Do you want to get fired?" Gerald growled. Noel felt his heart skip a beat. Gerald was his boss and the person who had hired him in the first place, and Noel realized that his fate was in his hands. Noel then looked at Charlotte. He didn't know her at all, only knew that the chairman sent her. Moreover, he didn't know what her relationship with the chairman was! Noel hesitated for a long time and decided he should stand on Gerald's side. Charlotte looked at the words she had written all over the page and was quite satisfied. "Instead of persuading me to move out, you guys should start working. Btw, don't push Noel. He can't take the order, you know. " she said calmly. Gerald thought Charlotte was deliberately working against him. He had never liked her and wouldn't allow her to stay in his office. He just wished the woman would disappear! "Charlotte, get out now, or I'll call security!" "Gerald, you know, you can read two more pages of the contract during this time." Gerald had to do it himself after realizing that Noel wouldn't do what he told him. Before Charlotte could react, he had already grabbed the paper off her desk. He then shredded that paper, crumpled it into a ball, and threw it in the trash. Gerald propped his hands on the table and looked at Charlotte with condescension. His eyes were full of anger. "Charlotte, how dare you!" Charlotte wasn't angry at all. Charlotte looked at him and said calmly, "I didn't expect you to be such a narrow-minded person. Tear these papers as you like. They are empty, anyway." She was surprised that she knew him so well. It was a coincidence. She subconsciously hid the copies she wrote and soon switched them to some empty papers when she saw them come in. Out of... or saying just as she expected, Gerold played mean and childish, again. Should it be her pleasure that Gerold treated her so special? "You! I'm asking you one last time! Are you leaving or not?" Gerald didn't expect Charlotte's counterattack. He couldn't think of anything else but getting rid of her! "No!" Charlotte sat calm and looked at him directly. Gerald immediately dragged her out of the office and threw the paper in his hand to her face. He sneered. "It seems that I was too kind to you before, Charlotte. Copy it twenty times!" After that, he slammed the door. Charlotte acted as if nothing had happened. She picked up the paper on the floor and paid no attention to the whispers of the people behind her.
