Gerald didn't give Charlotte a hard time after that. This was probably because he didn't want to see her or even mention her name.
Charlotte quietly spent the afternoon copying the contract. By the end of the day, her hands were hurting badly.
Charlotte thought to herself. In the digital era, who needs handwritten contracts? Gerald is just torturing me.
When Charlotte was at dinner, her hands were shaking a bit when she held her knife and fork. She did her best to act normal for fear of being spotted by Bruce and Mia.
Evelyn was still upset and didn't have much for dinner. She stared at Bruce and asked, "When will Gerald come home?"
Still angry with Gerald, Bruce answered, "He'd better not come back! He really pisses me off!"
"How could you be so cold? He is your son, anyway. But now he's alone and has no one to take care of him! Shame on you!"
"No one takes care of him? He must be having fun now!"
Evelyn thought for a while and hummed. "Maybe you're right. If I were him, I don't want to go home because I'd see people I don't like and get scolded by my parents. Natalie must be taking care of him now."
"Mom, you should be careful what you say. Charlotte will overthink and be upset! There's no way Gerald would cheat!" Mia immediately said in surprise.
Evelyn grimaced. "He's having a miserable time at home, so he deserves to be with someone he likes outside. Gerald has to work hard every day. He doesn't need to be blamed by you after he gets home. You terrible parents!"
Mia was annoyed, and her face darkened.
How could Evelyn say something like this? Wasn't she encouraging Gerald to cheat? Why did she support this? That blew my mind! Mia thought.
Charlotte couldn't help but frown when she heard it.
"No matter what, Gerald is still married. He should be faithful to the marriage."
"But you guys forced him to!"
Mia found there was no way for her to have a normal conversation with Evelyn.
Evelyn had been extremely doting on Gerald because he was the only boy in the Millers. Evelyn would satisfy his every wish. The boy would have been spoiled if Bruce hadn't been tough on Gerald.
Charlotte, on the other hand, had her meal without saying anything.
Evelyn had never liked Charlotte. Just like Linda, she was extremely fond of the delightful Natalie. They felt that Charlotte could not say nice things or be pleasing to people.
After the meal, Evelyn went back to her room. Mia took Charlotte's hand and comforted her, "Charlotte, ignore what Evelyn said. Gerald is a jerk, but he won't cheat on you."
Charlotte forced a smile. "Mom, it's okay. I don't care what she says."
"You're the same age as Natalie, and she's your cousin. I've known you since you were kids. Natalie is good at saying sweet things, but I always felt she didn't mean what she said. Charlotte, you are much more sincere!"
Evelyn called Gerald herself and told him to come home immediately. However, he refused. Evelyn felt so heartbroken that she even called Natalie to ask her to take care of Gerald!
The next day, Bruce took Charlotte to Gerald's office. He pointed to the desk by the window. "Charlotte, look, that's your spot. That's where you'll be working from now on."
Gerald grimaced and asked, "What do you mean by that?"
Bruce replied, "Charlotte is your assistant. It's easier for her to work if she stays in the same office with you. So you can call her if you need anything."
"I don't need that!"
"I'm the boss!"
"Hey, it's my office, so I'm in charge!"
Bruce replied calmly, "I'm your dad. Plus, I'm the chairman of the company."
Gerald was stunned.
Bruce's expression became complicated. "There's a shareholders' meeting in three days. Do you remember?"
Gerald's expression became sullener.
Charlotte didn't know what they were talking about. Finally, to her surprise, Gerald compromised.
In the next few hours, Gerald regarded her as a handyman, making her deliver documents, get him coffee, and do everything trivial. 。
"Bring me some coffee!"
Charlotte had just sat down when she heard Gerald's request. She had no choice but to follow his order. Within moments, she returned with a cup of hot coffee.
"It's too bland," Gerald said as he took a sip.
Charlotte rolled her eyes and ran out again with the coffee.
"Too bitter."
"Too sweet."
"Is this damn thing coffee?"
After letting her bring a few more cups of coffee, Gerald said indifferently, "I can't believe you can't even do such a tiny thing well. You are not capable at all!"
He was the one who deliberately made things difficult for her, yet he was still angry with her.
"Now copy the contract. Finish copying it today."
She was stunned. She couldn't write 200,000 words in one day!
"Got a problem with that?"
She took a deep breath. "How many words can you write in a minute?"
"A normal person can only write about 40 words a minute. If you write faster, you could write 60. So if you don't stop for a second, that's 3,600 in an hour, 86,400 in 24 hours. But, you know, it's already eleven o'clock."
That meant that even if she wrote for 13 hours without stopping for a minute, she wouldn't be able to finish even half of it.
I'm a human being, and my hand would break even if I type them on a computer, let alone write by hand! She thought.
"Do it or go back home!"
Noel heard something slamming from inside as he stood at the door with the file. He then couldn't help but close his eyes.
Were they enemies? They can't stop arguing. I've only been out for a few minutes, and they're arguing again. Noel thought to himself.
"I'm just reminding you that even if you want to give me a hard time, you can't cross the line. I'm sorry. I won't do that!"
"Then, you're fired!"
Gerald was glad to find such an excuse. He was right. If an employee couldn't complete the task given by his boss, there was no reason for him to stay in the company.
Charlotte pursed her lips and clenched her fist. After a while, she said, "I got it."
"Then, clean up the floor!"
"If you live under someone else's roof, you must do what they tell you." Charlotte, who had lived in other people's homes since she was a child, certainly understood this.
She could tell the drama to Bruce and Mia. But it wouldn't change anything. Gerald would find another way to step things up.
That's 200,000 words in total! I don't believe she can finish it. Gerald thought to himself.
Noel knocked on the door at that moment and handed him the papers to sign.
"Gerald, are you still having take-out for lunch?"
"Yeah."
"So what about Charlotte?"
"Just ignore her."
