Chapter Five

928 Words
Walking into my first class for the day, the first thing I noticed was my best friend. His seat was by the window in the back. He stared out that window with an expressionless face. I hated when he got like this. He was like a brick wall when it came to his feelings. I didn't know if he was upset, sad, or just plain indifferent to everything. And when he got like this it was going to take me the rest of the day to get him to talk to me again. This wasn't the first time he acted like this. Over the years I was gifted with his silence. But more so ever since we started here at the academy.  I walk over to his side and just stand there staring at him. Waiting. He didn't even more an inch, just kept staring out that window. I wasn't going to budge however. I plan to stand right here, all throughout class if necessary, until he looks at me.  I can be just as stubborn as he can damn it. People started trickling in going to their seats. When one person noticed me, others began to follow and even though I was getting embarrassed at the unwanted attention I was going to stand my ground. I knew he had noticed my presence. It looks as if he wasn't going to budge either. He still stared out at that damn window. Okay, I was beginning to lose my composure when everyone was now sitting and the instructor came walking in. Come on Calen! Like what the hell?!     Then just as I was about to lose it. I saw it. It was tiny, but it was there none the less. A tiny little smirk formed from his lips and that was all I needed to know that everything was going to be alright between us.  Smiling at my little victory I quickly scramble to my seat just diagonally from his in the next row. I quickly turn to look him to see hie was staring at me. He shook his head and rolled his eyes as the instructor began the lesson. I gave a cheesy smile that made him scoff and point at the front while mouthing 'pay attention'. Now rolling my eyes at him I look forward and groan to see what was on the board. Magic circles. Like everything else I can't do, I'm stuck being everyone's guinea pig. After a quick lesson of what we need to do we all head to the gym. I wait in the hall for Calen to come out of the room. Once he steps through I latch onto him and squeeze the crap out of his arm.  "Ow! Hey! What was that for?!"  "For ditching me and then ignoring me." I seethed as we walk behind everyone else. "Well, don't piss me off and I won't." He shrugged. I nearly growl at him in frustration. "Calen! It's your turn!" A girl named Chelsea said as she ran to him with a beaming smile. Two boys and another girl walked up to us as well. I frowned in confusion of what they were talking about. Here is the thing, even though me and Calen are best friends doesn't mean I am the only friend he has. I may have no one else in this place but he does. Unfortunately for me I have to share him with others. Ugh, It's really annoying too. "Okay, what is it this time?" He asked her. "Favorite song." She beamed at him again. Seriously if she smiled any brighter we were all going to go blind. That has to be a spell she uses to keep those pearls, we call teeth, a pure white shine. Realizing what she said I snort. Yeah, yeah unattractive I know but I don't care remember. They all turn to look at me when I did. I clear my throat and look away from them. Calen never tells anyone what his favorite song is. I have asked him multiple times and I always get shrugged off about it. Instead the answer he'll give is... "Fly with Me, Jonas Brothers."  I nearly trip over my foot with that answer. He hates the Jonas Brothers. Which tells me he must have heard that song somewhere and is his most hated song of the week. One of the guys made a face at his answer. "Dude, seriously?" He asked incredulously. "Oh my god! You like them too?! I love the Jonas Brothers!" Chelsea nearly shrieked, jumping up and down. Before any one of us could say anything, Chelsea whipped around and ran to another group. The rest followed her. I look up at Calen to see a serious look on his face. "What's wrong?" He turned to look at me and stated, "I just discovered that Chelsea isn't my soulmate." I jerked back at that. "I didn't know you were considering it."             "Oh I wasn't, but she confirmed, it definitely is not her."            A smile forms on my lips. "All because she likes the Jonas Brothers?"        He made a face similar to that other boy. "Yeah, she has the worst taste in music."  I slugged him in the arm lightly. "You are the worst." I chuckle. "But you know, now they think your favorite music is boy band pop."  I laugh good heartily seeing his face turn pale.  "Shit." Was all he said before we finally reached the dreaded gym, where all my problems were going to be well known once again.
