Chapter Four

1026 Words
When Calen and I realized we were going to be in the same class our happiness couldn't have been more noticeable. You see, Calen didn't even want to attend the academy. He only joined because I was dead set on becoming a great witch like my ancestors before me. I come from a long line of legendary witches and warlocks. So legendary that my family's name was well known throughout many countries. We were sought out for one reason or another. Whether it be for spells, healing, hexes, curses, potions or just plain tarot readings, you name it. Though my family are usually against any evil doings whether it be for their own gain or someone else's, it does occur sometimes. My family isn't perfect but it doesn't mean they take well to having magicless offspring. Namely...me. Most members in my family show signs of having magic abilities by the age of seven. Sometimes we have late bloomers, like my cousin Joanna, who didn't show signs until she was nearly eleven years old. The amount of relief that her parents showed was large.  My older sister Sasha was the youngest in history to show signs at the age of four. She happens to be one of the strongest witches out there. When I turned seven and still showed no signs, my parents at first thought maybe I was like Joanna, but when I turned twelve and still showed no signs everyone was beginning to worry. See, my family hasn't had a non magical witch for three centuries. After all that time it seemed fate was overdue. By my thirteenth birthday certain people in my family started snubbing me and treated me like a walking disease. They said I was cursed. My parents began to isolate me from everyone. Sasha started doing enchantments and made me drink potions that tasted like garbage. I didn't understand why it was so bad to not have magical powers. I never thought my family could have been so shallow. But through it all one person stood by my side regardless. He never cared that I didn't have magic and hated my family who treated me like an outcast. He never treated me any different. Calen hated my parents with a passion and I never understood that. Maybe it was because the way they treated him upon their first meeting each other. Actually, I never understood my parents reaction to Calen either.  When I was just five years old my parents took me up to out cabin in the deepest part of the mountains because of some eclipse that was occurring that year. There I met a little boy who was playing all by himself down by the river. I had once again ran away from my maid since according to my parents and sister I had been a little hellion during my younger years. More like I was completely bored out of my mind. I had been staying in the cabin for two weeks and not once had I seen him before. There wasn't supposed to be anyone else in those parts of the forest but there he was. His pants were rolled up to his knees while he stood in the water trying to catch fish with his bare hands. When he finally noticed me he was at first shocked. When we both realized that we were the same age and had many things in common it was like instant best friends. Not a single day after that were we ever apart. The day I decided to introduce him to my mother was a day I would never forget. When I mentioned him during meal times I didn't realize then that their expressions were one of concern. When they asked to meet him I was ecstatic. When I told Calen he was at first hesitant but complied. When that day came, before any introductions were told, my mother took one look at him and immediately banned me from ever seeing him again. Calen didn't take to well with that and got angry at her but she ended up chasing him away. She scolded me that I must never go near him again and forbid me to mention him to anyone. Being five years old I didn't understand why she was acting the way she was. I was heartbroken though that I had lost the only friend I had ever made.  That night however, while we were all asleep, Calen came to my window and told me that nothing was ever going to separate us from being friends. He then told me we had to keep it secret otherwise we would be in big trouble and they might take me away from him. I was just happy that he came back and still wanted to hang out with me. So from then on we secretly stayed friends and away from the watchful eyes of my family. Even when I left the mountains and told him the city I lived in, he was there. He followed me home telling me that his family also stayed in the same city, so it was like our friendship was meant to be. We were never apart for a single day.  When I discovered that I was accepted to the academy was one of confusion and delight. I was excited to go, it was my chance to finally bring out the power within that refused to be released, while also confused that I was even considered since I still showed no signs. My parents were all for it and immediately enrolled me. Calen, not so much. He hated the idea of me going. Hated the fact of suddenly being separated after nine years of always being together. So, to my surprise, the day I stood in front of those gates I felt a presence next to me. Looking over, I see Calen dressed in the uniform with his satchel over his shoulders looking ahead at the school. I'll never forget the words he spoke right before we set foot onto the grounds. "I feel like this is going to bite us in the ass one day."
