Entangled bonds

770 Words
Yuri’s POV “Opal,” I call her cautiously. Drake is on edge, taking small steps toward her, but the magic sends us flying into the wall. Thankfully, Drake covers me, softening the impact. “Are you alright?” Drake asks, his eyes scanning me from head to toe. His concern, framed on his handsome face, is endearing, but I can’t focus on that. I’m too busy watching Opal’s magic swirling around her, green particles visible to my eyes. “What the hell is Opal up to?” I mutter. “I have no idea,” Drake replies, advancing carefully. I follow him on my toes, but he stops me, pulling me behind him. I glare at him. “Stay back, you could get hurt,” he says. His words sting, reminding me of the loss of my wolf, but I know he’s right, so I stay put. Drake’s warm magic surrounds him as he approaches Opal. His hand shifts, sprouting claws and golden dragon scales as he slashes through the magical circle, dispelling it. Opal gasps for breath, looking like herself again, free from the daze of the spell. “Opal, are you alright?” Drake asks gently. She nods, and as he holds her hand, something warm passes between them. I step out of the room, giving them some privacy, though a sinking feeling churns in my stomach. What’s going on? Drake claims I’m his mate, but his actions contradict that. Maybe he’s just playing with me, keeping me around for his amusement. I hate him, but without my wolf, I’m bound to follow him as my leader. I check my messages, seeing one from Mac: “I’m still working on getting the Night Pack details. It’s shady.” I sigh; this isn’t good news for the Silver Canine Pack. “What’s happening over there?” I text back. “People are still under Alpha Kevin’s control. I plan to kill him tonight. Wish me luck,” he replies, adding a happy emoji and a selfie in a black mask and tight black shirt, his eyes the only part visible. “I wish I could fight alongside my wolf. I miss the action,” I text. “You better accomplish the mission, Mac, and bring me the good news of you becoming the Alpha.” “I will, Beta Yuri,” he replies. “I won’t disappoint you. Once I’m Alpha, I’ll come to see you.” “I’ll be waiting,” I respond. “See you,” he texts back, adding a heart emoji. I hold the phone to my chest, gazing at the sky and silently praying for his safety. Deep down, I’m worried about him. “Who are you texting?” a jealous voice startles me. I turn to see Drake, his golden eyes burning. “Mac,” I say nonchalantly, brushing past him to head to the kitchen. He grabs my hand. “Why is he texting you?” he asks. “None of your business, Drake,” I reply calmly. “It’s not like I owe you an explanation about who I talk to or who I date. You’re no one.” “I’ve told you how I feel about you,” Drake says, his voice low but commanding. “A mate bond between us?” I scoff, raising an eyebrow. “It doesn’t seem like we have anything, Drake.” “She’s right,” Opal steps out, her eyes drifting to our clasped hands. “Drake, I wasn’t lying when I said that only my mate could break the barrier, and you did it. My magic spirals out of control, and only Head Witch Abi’s medicine can calm me.” I swallow hard at her words. Why does this bother me so much? I quickly try to pull my hand from Drake’s grip, but he holds on firmly. Damn, I wish I still had my wolf to kick his ass. “Opal is your mate,” I say flatly. “It’s obvious I’m not.” “I have strong feelings for you, Yuri,” Drake says, his voice steady, though my heart starts racing. What’s happening to me? Am I getting sick? I glance at Opal; her eyes have turned hostile. Before I can process it, Drake yanks me towards him. My body presses against his hard chest, and I feel an overwhelming warmth, like a soothing lullaby wrapping around me. What’s going on? I look around and realize we’re floating mid-air. Opal’s magic has attacked, but Drake’s anger is now focused solely on her, as she looks at us in shock.
