Chapter 5 – The Millers Party

2035 Words
Leah’s POV It was now the end of the second week of May and today we had our last exam today. The last month had flown by and I couldn’t believe in less than 12 hours my high school journey would be over. It was insane! And to top off the week, we had the Millers end of year Paty to look forward to too. Initially, I didn’t really want to go, but actually, now it was here, I thought it would be fun, and well, Kaya needed me, so, it was happening. The exams weren’t nearly as stressful as I thought they would be. They certainly wasn’t a walk in the park, but with 2 of mine based mainly on course work, I only really had to concentrate on business. Jayden and I took business together, so when the exam was over Jayden packed up his stuff and called me over "How did you think that went?" he asked confidently. "Not too bad, I don’t think. Guess we’ll soon find out wont we!" I smiled "How about you?" " Well, I think we nailed it" he said with a smug look on his face as he winked at me. I just laughed it off as I carried on packing up my stuff. "You and K both still coming tonight?" He continued as we started to head out the door. "Yeah, we’ll be there" "Great" Jayden put his arms around me, something that he had recently been accustomed to doing, which I found a little awkward, but in his defence, I never told him that. In the last few months, we have been helping each other study. I guess he was just being friendly. When Cal joined me and Kaya at the car, he was grinning wide. "Well, how was your last exam? All done now!" "Not too bad actually," I smiled. "Yeah, okay I guess" Kaya shrugged. She was super intelligent, so I knew she had aced it. We arrived and went straight upstairs. "Girls, you will eat before you go!" "Okay Mum", Kaya called. We got everything ready for the make-over to commence, and took turns showering and washing our hair. By the time phase one was over, tea was ready. We ate in record time and went straight back to the job in hand. I had little experience with makeup, but this was more than Kaya had, so I did both mine and hers. I was pleased with the results. We both went with a light amount of bronze and blush, just enough to give a little glow, a pink tint and gloss on the lips and plain eyes with black mascara and eye liner. Simple but effective. Kaya took one look at my hair and got to work. She had been watching videos on YouTube and decided to try something out on me. I ended up with wispy curls at the front and a fishtail braid, trailing to the left side and over my shoulder. I loved it. Kaya straightened hers and left it loose, it was sleek and shiny and swayed effortlessly as she moved. It looked gorgeous. We both got dressed and looked at each other and then in the mirror. I was impressed. "Wow, we look good" I exclaimed. "Just good?" Kaya asked, a little concerned. "Let me rephase, we look hot!" I laughed. "I think we did well." We were ready to go. We made our way downstairs. We walked into the kitchen and all eyes turned to us. I looked over at Kai and his eyes were momentarily wide, he soon popped them back in his head. If you blinked, you would have missed it. I had hoped it was because he thought I looked nice, but I knew it was more to do with Kaya’s dress. "That dress is short", Cal eyed Kaya closely. "Shut up dad" Cal was right, it was short, but she looked amazing in it! "Wow girls, you look great!" Mel smiled widely. "Thanks Mum" "Come on then, let's go". Kai sounded bored. "You’re taking us?" I asked. "Yes, problem?" "No, no problem! Thanks" Jeez, attitude much! We arrived fashionably late on purpose. We didn’t want to look too eager. We shouldn’t have worried. The place was packed. The barn was quite big. It is currently being converted by the Millers from a grotty old disused hay bale barn into additional living space. We made our way to where the drinks were located. "I’m not sure this was a good idea" Kaya stated. "Stop stressing Kaya, have a drink and calm your nerves. It’ll be fine. You got this!" We headed over to the area that had all sorts of drinks laid out and we each took a bottled cocktail, hoping that it was a safe choice. Neither of us drank that much, but it wasn’t like we had never been out! I saw Jayden in the corner of my eye with a group of familiar faces. In fact, as I looked around, I saw most of my year and many of the year below. "Hey, Jayden’s over there, wanna say hi?" I tried to sound casual, but I was anxious for her. She shifted on her heel and sighed "f**k. Let’s just do it – now or never!" I could tell she didn’t want to, but she also really did. She downed her drink, picked up another and just started heading over. I was in awe of both her bravery and her stupidity! "Jayden, Hi" Kaya just went straight in for the kill. He looked her up and down and smirked. Rude! I was so angry with him. "What the hell are you smirking at?" I saw him physically recoil. He looked bashful and I could have sworn, ashamed. "Ummm, oh s**t, wow Leah, I am so sorry" he said almost under his breath. What was up with him? "Jayden, why are you being a d**k?" "I, um, I’m sorry, Kaya, you look good. I didn’t mean to stare." Kaya smiled shyly "Jayden, do you wanna go get a drink?" He smiled and took her hand as they wandered back inside. I grabbed her before she left and whispered in her ear "Good luck, not that you need it! Be careful and don’t do anything you are not comfortable with", I gave her a hug and a wink as she wandered off. What the hell was I gonna do with myself now she had left me? I made my way over to the group congregating in the lounge and joined in the conversation. They were weirdly having a relatively civilised conversation about what we were all going to do over the summer and our plans for work, college or Uni. We had been chatting for a while. I had a few drinks but was drinking fairly slowly as I didn’t want to show myself up. I was feeling surprisingly good and having a great time. We chatted for ages before the boys decided it wasn’t lively enough and decided to take shots. It was at this point me and a few of the girls decided to leave them, to it. I checked the time and realised I hadn’t seen Kaya in hours. In fact, Kai would be here soon to pick us up and I needed to find her. I hope she is alright. I felt guilty that I hadn’t thought of looking for her sooner. I went to go find her and searched through the slowly dwindling groups of people inside, but she was nowhere to be seen. I headed out the back to see if I could see her and as I stepped outside, I laughed to myself as I heard the lads being rowdy. I waited a sec for my eyes to adjust. It was difficult to see, the lighting was quite dim, but I could hear muffled talking and headed in that general direction. The ground was difficult to walk on as nothing had been done to this area yet and it still looked a bit like a building yard. I practically fell into Jayden and Kaya, as they came around the side of a half-demolished wall. They scared me half to death. "Watch your step their sweet cheeks" Jayden grinned as he caught me, "you shouldn’t be wandering out here on your own so late, it’s not safe." I blushed at his hands moved from my waist. Thank God neither of them could see me clearly. "Oh, sorry, I was just coming to find Kaya and um…" I trailed off. "Don’t worry your little head, I haven’t kidnapped her" he chuckled. "Haha, we were just heading back inside as I was getting a bit cold, what have you been up to?" she asked as we headed inside. "Just chatting with everyone. But everyone is pretty wasted now, and people are starting to head home or fall asleep!" I laughed "Our lift will be here any minute, so I was just coming to get you." A car pulled up, and Kaya looked out the door, "Yeah, It’s Kai." We said goodbye and made our way out to the car. Kaya turned back to see Jayden in the doorway, "Thanks again", she called out, "Night" and with that we got in the car. I thought her goodbye a little weird for someone who is either now in a relationship or got her heart broken. Our conversation would have to wait until we got home. "Have fun?" Kai asked, more to Kaya than to me. "Yeah, thanks for picking us up" she smiled sweetly at him. "I’d say anytime, but I wouldn’t mean it" he laughed. I was sitting in the back of the car, and I was glad, his laugh, when raw like that, did things to me. This crush was going nowhere fast, and it was embarrassing. We arrived home and all went straight upstairs. Kaya and I changed into our Pj’s, and I went into the bathroom to clean my teeth. "f**k" I almost screamed as I saw kai standing at the sink in his boxers cleaning his teeth. "Didn’t you learn your lesson after last time!" I scolded. He scared the s**t out of me. "Maybe I was hoping for a repeat from last time" he grinned as he spat out the toothpaste, wiped his mouth and looked over at me. I was so shocked by his response. I stood there with my mouth open, eyes wide and a confused frown across my forehead. "Flies, Leah, again… you’ll catch flies" and with that Kaya walked into the bathroom. "God Kai, the least you could do was put on your Pj bottoms when you know Leah is here. She doesn’t want to have to bleach her eyes, you know." He left the bathroom, and we cleaned our teeth. We got into bed and snuggled down. I said quietly "I had a really good time tonight, I was nice to just chat and chill with people, I had a laugh." I was just about to grill Kaya about what happened with Jayden when I heard her lightly snoring next to me. Dammit Kaya, I am so tired, but I def was not expecting to go to sleep until I had heard all the gossip about her time with Jayden. They were gone for hours. I noticed she had no lipstick on when I finally found her, but other than that she looked pretty much intact. Now I will have to wait until tomorrow for the details. As sleep started to take over, I couldn’t help but re-play what happened in the bathroom with Kai. Was he being a d**k, or was he flirting with me? I couldn’t tell, and I wondered if it was all in my head. I mean that was almost a year ago now. Why would he have brought it up now? Why not back then? I was confused. But more than that, I was imprinting fresh new images of his sweet, hot, sexy, toned, tanned body in my mind, more ammo for my dreams. And with that, I drifted off into a blissful sleep, all thoughts either starting or ending with Kai.
