Charles Hudson turned around to greet me, he had a huge grin on his face.
I smiled, confused and shook his hand politely.
" I don't understand, you own Prestige?"
" My family purchased the company recently. Well, Lana here had a big hand in all of this, it was a secret really, what one in business might call a hostile takeover.
My fiancé here made it quite seemless really." He touched her arm lovingly.
" You mean Lana was your little spy then?" I asked sarcastically.
He frowned. "Jo, don't be like that, it's just business."
I hated big sharks that ate up the little minnows trying to create a great company. I was mad as hell.
Lana stood in front of me.
" Charles here told me you and he actually went to college together, imagine my surprise hearing this. What a coincidence." She didn't seem happy to know this.
What if she knew we had s*x under the stars on a magic filled night.
Well, apparently he didn't even remember that, so it was another one of my secrets to hold. f**k! I was feeling jealous now.
I bent over and removed my high heels, handing them to him.
I asked him to walk with me to my office. My feet were killing me in those heels I had worn them specifically to meet my new boss.
Lana frowned deeply this time.
" Josephine!" She barked at me.
Fuck you sss spy, my mind yelled angrily.
Charles faced her. "Give us a moment."
He followed me to the elevator, but I kept going to the stairwell.
I went up to the roof instead.
We sat on a bench I had placed there, along with a nice sustainable green garden.
" Why so surly Jo?" He asked as he unbuttoned his fancy suit jacket and sat down.
" I'm not sure. It just rubbed me the wrong way how Lana got in here and maneuvered a corporate take over in just over a years time. Makes me feel sick. Not ethical really."
"Jo, it's just business. Not anything that reflects badly on you." He took my hand.
I looked at his well manicured hand a moment.
I was actually glad that he was here. I sighed, releasing my anger. Mother always said it was my best quality, I forgave easily.
" This right here is my thinking spot. I come up here to dream and make plans." I smiled at him, trying to have a better attitude.
It was getting dark now, way past quiting time.
I had stayed late to prepare to meet our new boss. I wasn't prepared to see Charles again.
The sky was so clear up here.
I saw a shooting star and gasped. I remembered that night.
He stood up and wrenched his neck back. "s**t that was cool, make a wish Jo."
I did, the same one I had wished for before, so long ago now.
I wanted a kiss.
But...my mind felt foggy as I blinked my eyes several times, feeling suddenly very naked and cold, I shuddered.
____________
My clothes were gone, I felt the cool water on my skin as the quiet woman washed me.
"Don't fight me, I will hurt you, understand me Punta?" She roughly cleaned me between my legs. I closed my eyes again. I couldn't face this reality, I only desired to be in the past now....
_____________
I blinked my eyes and looked around, I was on the roof top.
Charles' phone buzzed. He took the call. "I said I would meet you at Turners on 4th street. Yes, I am still coming. OK, order my favorite then." I could hear Lana, angry on the other end.
" Well, you better go then." I said.
He looked intently into my eyes.
I thought he might kiss me then.
He shook his blond head and took a step back from me.
I sat back with my arms supporting me on the bench.
Run you chicken. I didn't dare say it, but thought it none the less.
He nodded and went to the door.
He turned back as he opened it.
" I hope you decide to stay, I need you here...I mean the company needs your expertise."
I kicked my feet in front of me and stayed quiet.
"I will sleep on it tonight." I said morosly.
______________
I did stay, I owed it to Emmery and all the staff, but I didn't like it. I had new eyes to who Lana Hill really was, so shady.
About a month later Brea called me to ask me to take Sophia for the day. David and her were speaking at a fundraiser for his charity work overseas.
I jumped at the chance.
I brought my little niece with me to the office. It was Sarurday, but I needed to do a bit of work.
The place was empty.
Sophia fell asleep. I layed her little warm body into the stroller and shut my laptop preparing to go for a long walk on the trail in town.
I left down the elevator for a change.
I walked towards the trail and began to pick up my pace, pushing the stroller.
I heard a man calling me.
" Hey Jo! I thought that was you."
It was Charles.
I slowed and waited for him to catch up to me.
Sophia was still out, I had pulled the sun shade down over her face.
" Mind if I walk with you a bit?" He said frowning as he looked intently at Sophia.
I nodded.
" So, you look good," he said.
" Thanks." I responded.
We walked in silence for a while.
" I...I want to see the baby." He said slowing.
I smiled and nodded, taking her warm little body out of the stroller. She was still sleeping soundly.
" Want to...uh..hold her?" I offered.
He stared at her then touched her little head. "She looks just like you." He said and smiled at her warmly.
I turned my head to the side.
"Thanks, yeah I see it, Brea thinks she looks like her." I laughed.
Charles opened his mouth to say something, but his phone rang just at that moment.
I put Sophia back into her stroller, waving goodbye to Charles as he took the call.
" See yah Monday!" I yelled as I quickly walked around the bend.
My heart was beating so fast. I wondered...did he think this was our little baby? I mean he never said he remembered that night, nor asked me about my baby.
I pondered all of this as I moved to quicken my pace.
_______________
I got home and dropped Sophia off with mom and dad. Brea called and asked me to come to the fundraiser tonight, she wanted me to speak.
I dressed in mother's little black dress and her cutest gold toned flats.
I left in dad's car, the red Porsche. It seemed like an extravagant thing to do, but I needed to drive fast tonight. It was that kind of night.
I valet parked and walked into the huge ballroom.
It was where they held the annual governor's ball.
I saw Brea and David. They looked so good together, dressed to the nines.
I kissed them and smiled.
" Change of plans, David got Charles Hudson to speak." She grinned.
I grimaced, not wanting to see him again tonight.
" Well, he is so handsome, he is sure to bring in the big money, no offense squirt." David said.
I shrugged and went to find a cold drink.
I made my way to the bar.
The bartender offered me a shot of flavored tequila. I preferred sparkling wine.
I heard the crowd around the bar yelling," Shots, shots, shots."
The bartender handed me the shot. I was about to take it, when a familiar male hand snaked out and took it, throwing it back and slamming the glass on the counter.
The small crowd cheered.
I looked at Charles Hudson.
" You are making that a habbit." I smiled.
He grinned. "Ah, graduation week." He pointed at me.
"Let's go outside to the lawn." He joked as he took my hand, leading me away towards the door.
David spotted us.
" Hey, get over here and give your old pal a hug!"
They hugged over the loud hum of the music and noise.
My sister saw him, latched onto him and kissed his ear.
"Thanks for coming on short notice."
He nodded and looked at me, still holding my hand.
