Roots

1801 Words
Xander's heart breaks when he sees all the sadness in those eyes. The pain is like nothing he has experienced before. Everything in him is going out to this person. He doesn't understand how he is able to connect with anyone like this. All the emotions in those beautiful eyes seem to be seeping through to his own heart just by looking through them. And he finds himself unable to look away. He is being drawn in like a moth to a flame. His aching heart feels like its in a million pieces when he sees just how much they are suffering. By instinct he stretches out his hand to wipe their tears that won't stop falling. "Don't cry, everything will be alright. I will find you, I promise." He doesn't know why these words leave his mouth but he just feels like he needs to say them and the moment he does he feels at peace. The silver eyes too look like they heard him. He notices a new glint of hope shine through just for a moment before everything goes dark. The next time he opens his eyes he finds himself with his head on a book, one that he had been reading last night. He frowns when he realises that he'd been asleep which means everything he experienced just now is nothing but a dream. But he still can't shake the feeling of just how real it feels. His whole body still feels the lingering emotions that he just experienced. He actually remembers every single detail about it, not like the way he would remember bits and pieces of his usual dreams. It's already morning, the sun is shining brightly and luckily it's his off day otherwise he would have been very late for work. He rubs his face in frustration, his life has been turned upside down with everything going on. He gets up and walks over to one of the large windows and looks out into his garden. His eyes fall on a beautiful white rose bush that is in full bloom. Its covered with dew and the sun hitting it makes the drops of water sparkle reminding him of those silver eyes. The shimmer in them was so distinct and something about them felt like they were calling out to him. And what surprises him the most is his strong desire to answer that call. His own willingness to just want to fall in and get lost in them forever. Everything happening to him doesn't make sense. And he suspects it has everything to do with his eighteenth birthday because up until now he never had such weird things happening to him. Except the time he had to be pulled out of school. That was the first time he and his mom found out that he wasn't like the other kids. It happened when he was in kindergarten and a boy punched him. He was so angry that his eyes started glowing red and that scared the other kids. At first he didn't understand why the kids were scared and he was always sad that no one wanted to play with him until the day he saw it for himself. It scared him too but over time he got used to it and thanks to his mom who made it out to be like a super power that he possessed. Eventually his mom just opted for home schooling. She didn't want him to be bullied for being different and ever since he has gotten used to being by himself. It's the whole reason he didn't think twice about getting his cabin that is isolated from everything and everyone. But then again in his heart of hearts he doesn't think they are strange at all. They feel like they are a part of him somehow. His mind goes to what the guardian said to him and wonders if its true. A prince and an heir? In a way he has always known that he was different but the possibility of being so different he might belong to a whole different world had never crossed his mind until now. He is not even sure if there is anything else that exists apart from the world he knows. He looks back at the stack of books that he had carried from the library. He is no history fan but he is on a mission to try to understand what is going on with him. He hopes to find clues or something that will tell him who or what he is. But that task is so huge and so far he has got nothing. He even tried to google anything about the Dome kingdom but found nothing. He makes a note to check out the myths and legends section maybe he might get something there. If only he could find himself back in that place where he met the guardian maybe he could ask more questions but for now nothing he has done has made him go back. He even tried sleeping thinking that might get him there but all that did was give him some much needed rest. He decides to let everything rest for now. Even he is tired from all the research he is doing and not getting anywhere. He walks back to his bed and lays down. He is still lost in thought when his phone rings and it's his mother. "Hey mom" he tries to sound cheerful, otherwise she is going to head to his place if she thinks something is troubling him. They do their usual morning chat. It's something they have done since forever. When he stayed with her she would come to his room to make sure he was ok but now that he lives alone she makes sure to call him every morning. "How is my little boy?" His mother asks. "Just fine mom" he replies but the words 'little boy' gives him an idea. "Mom can I come over? I need to ask you something." "Sure baby, you know I could never say no to having you around." She already sounds happy and he smiles. "Ok, I will see you in a bit." "Now why didn't I think of her before?" He asks himself as he goes to have a change of clothes. Maybe she might help him get some answers. He has avoided this topic all this while because he was afraid of hurting her. He didn't want her to think she was not enough for him when she was everything to him. The woman loved him and accepted him like she would her own flesh and blood. But now with everything going on he needs to know about his roots and he hopes she will be able to give him something. When he is done he picks up his helmet and keys to his bike and walks out. He also gets ready for a lecture from his mother about the dangers of riding his bike. She is convinced he will end up dead one day but that is not enough to scare him. He is too addicted to the adrenaline rush he gets when he rides his baby. He feels like he is flying and that beats anything else that he enjoys doing. It doesn't take him long to get to his mother's and he finds her in her usual favourite place, her garden. He is sure she is planting and replanting everything, something she does even to his own garden. When she sees him she runs to him and gives him a hug. It feels so good he wishes he was little again so that he could just bury himself in her arms. "Hi mom" "Hello baby. I see you still have that thing that threatens to take you away from me" "Oh mom, you know nothing will ever take me away from you. Not even my bike." He chuckles but she just looks at him with her warning look. "Now what is troubling you?" She asks as she leads them to the garden seats that are in the centre of the beautiful space. "I didn't say I was troubled," he retorts. His mother just laughs. "I know you. You run from me like the plague so you bringing yourself means only one thing. So what is it?" She smirks at him. He just laughs. "You are my son, I know you." That remark stops him in his tracks. He wonders if all this is worth it. He can clearly see how much she loves him and thinks asking about his birth parents might just hurt her. "Stop thinking, just say it. " He finds his mother looking at him expectantly and he just sighs as he sits down. "Am sorry for doing this mom." "Hey whatever it is am ok." She looks at him with love in her eyes and it gives him some confidence. "Who are my birth parents?" He just cuts to the chase and asks as directly as he can. His mother just laughs but when he just looks at her, her laughter dies down and she looks at him seriously. "I always knew this day would come" she smiles at him and he feels better. At least she is not tearing or looking hurt. "Not that I never wanted it to come but I was afraid I might not be able to give you the answers you seek or want" she looks into the distance like she was trying to recall a memory and he just sits there listening. "I don't know who your birth parents are... I mean I never met them and I don't think anyone ever did" "What do you mean with no one ever did?" "Because..." She hesitates and he looks up at her. "Because I just happened to find you." "I thought I was adopted" he says calmly. "That was just for formality Xander. I never said anything before because I didn't want you to think someone never loved you so they abandoned you." "I was abandoned?" He had expected something like this but hearing it gives him a lump in his throat. His own parents never wanted him. His mother comes close to him and takes his hand but that is not what he wants, he needs to hear all of it. "Where did you find me?" "Xander..." "Where did you find me?" his voice sounds like he is growling surprising even himself. "By the lake at our old home." His mother answers quickly. He is out of there the moment she says it. His mother's pleas for him to get back are falling on deaf ears. He is already on his bike speeding down the highway heading to where it all began for him.
