Jessica skimmed through the document as Charles attended a few calls. The entire PR department in her office was in a frenzy and there was only so much that they could do at the moment.
"Our construction project could jeopardize many small vendors and there are economic activists outside our door," Charles said. "Unless we want the ILO to come knocking, we need to sort it out quickly."
"Halt the project. Send out a press release stating that we've halted the project and we're looking into this issue to ensure that the ecosystem doesn't get disrupted,” Jessica barked orders to her employees. “Charles, I think we’ll have to schedule a few good meetings with some people,” she sighed and Charles understood.
Charles quickly deployed the emergency plan, and arranged for Jessica to have dinner with the heads of government departments in the evening to make good relations.
"I've gotten all my cards out, Jessica. These are the people who know what's going on and might be able to salvage the situation. They didn't take kindly to your father running away from his debts, so be careful when you talk to them. It wasn't an easy task convincing them that you are not him," Charles said as they walked into the hotel lobby.
Jessica's father was not the hero that she thought him to be as a child. His decisions had cost her entire family and she wasn't going to forgive that man anytime soon. At least, if she knew where he was. It didn't surprise her that not many during this meeting were going to be nice to her, but that's a price she had to pay for what her father had done.
Bracing herself, she walked into the room and a wave of judgemental stares hit her. It didn't take her long to work the room and understand the people in front of her.
"We can work this out so that no one loses. Help me understand how I can get out of this situation and I'll work on building revenue streams both inside and out," Jessica proposed and waited for their answers. She might have appeared bold and confident, but only she knew how she was shaking like a leaf inside. She had to get through. There was no option.
Despite the initial judgmental stares, Jessica's proposal seemed to have caught the attention of the government officials. They listened intently and asked probing questions, trying to assess the seriousness of the situation and Jessica's ability to handle it.
As she answered their questions and provided solutions, Jessica could feel the tension in the room slowly dissipating. The officials started to nod in agreement and even offered some suggestions of their own. By the end of the meeting, Jessica had managed to secure their support and agreement to work with her to find a solution that would benefit everyone involved.
As she walked out of the hotel, Jessica couldn't help but feel a sense of relief. She knew that the road ahead would not be easy, but with the support of the government officials, she felt like she had a fighting chance.
"Thank you, Charles," Jessica said as they got into the car. "I couldn't have done it without you."
"That's what I'm here for," Charles replied with a smile. "But don't forget, the hard work is just beginning. We still have a long way to go."
"I know," Jessica said with a sigh. "But at least now I have a plan."
As they drove back to the office, Jessica's mind raced with ideas and strategies. She knew that there would be challenges ahead, but for the first time in a long time, she felt hopeful about the future.
Jessica couldn’t help but think about the issue that has been haunting her and her company. She knew William would have handled this with ease, considering the influence they had in the industry. Jessica hesitated for a moment, unsure if she was ready to confront William about the situation. Despite their past, she knew that he was the only person who could potentially help salvage the project.
Finally, she made up her mind and agreed to meet with William. The thought of facing him again made her stomach churn, but she knew that she couldn't let her personal feelings get in the way of her professional responsibilities.
The next day, Jessica gathered up her courage to go meet her husband and request him for his help. Although she never wanted to do this and stoop to this level, she knew that there was no one else who could get her out of her fix. And she didn’t even know if William was ready to help her. What if he just laughed at her and shooed her away?
Nervously walking up the colossal building that was his office, she managed to get into the elevator and to his floor. She hoped that he was not busy and had enough time to hear her out. She couldn’t let her ego get the best of her. No matter what happened, she had to make sure that he was on her side.
As soon as she reached the floor, the elevator dinged open and lo and behold, William was standing there in all his glory, but this time with a trophy dangling around his arm. A pretty blonde stuck to his side, overly feminine and a tad bit giggly. Whatever William did was his personal business, but somehow looking at the sight in front of her just got her disgusted. She was one of those girls who he had slept with and there was nothing else for him. He already made it clear that he was playing with her, but seeing another woman next to him made it all so real.
William met Jessica’s eye. As soon as he saw her, he took a step back from the woman next to him and asked her to go upstairs. She obliged happily and kissed him on his cheek before she left. After seeing this, Jessica was no longer in the mood to talk to him about her problems. Jessica chose to turn a blind eye to the scene in front of her and walked on ahead, avoiding William and his gaze. But as soon as she walked past him, he caught her wrist, halting her midway.
"Don't touch me," Jessica said, pulling her arm away from William's grasp. She could feel the woman's perfume lingering in the air as she walked away.
William raised an eyebrow, his expression unreadable. "What brings you here, Jessica?" he asked, his voice cool and detached.
Even though it was killing her to ask him for his help, she had no other choice but to do it. There was too much at stake and that good-for-nothing-woman who just walked away was not going to ruin it for her.
"I need your help," Jessica replied letting out a huge sigh, trying her best to keep her tone professional. "Our construction project is facing some issues, and I was hoping you could help us resolve them."
William’s expression softened a bit at Jessica’s request. He gestured for her to follow him to his office. Once they were inside, he motioned for her to take a seat while he poured two cups of coffee.
"So, what kind of problems are you facing with the construction project?" he asked, sitting down across from her.
Jessica explained the situation, laying out all the details for him. William listened carefully, asking questions every now and then to get a better understanding of the issue.
After she had finished, there was a moment of silence between them. Jessica waited anxiously for his response, wondering what he was thinking. Finally, William spoke up.
"I can help you, but it will come at a price," he said, looking straight into her eyes.
Jessica knew that there was always a catch with William, but she was desperate. "What kind of price?" she asked, her heart beating fast.
William leaned back in his chair, a sly smile forming on his lips. "I want you to be my mistress," he said, his eyes glinting with mischief.
Jessica was taken aback by his request. She had never thought of herself as the kind of woman who would agree to such a thing. But she had no other choice.
"I'll do it," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
William grinned triumphantly. "Good. I'll take care of everything. Just leave the details to me," he said, standing up to show her out.
Jessica left the office feeling defeated, but at the same time, relieved. At least she had managed to get William's help.
As soon as Jessica got into the car, Camilla called her and asked her to come back early in the evening. Jessica felt uneasy. If she goes back to Patel's house, she might have to face William that night. But thinking of the scene she had seen earlier, she feared that William might want to spend the night with the other woman.
When Jessica returned to the house alone, Camilla asked, "Where's William? Aren't you two together?"
"He may still be at the company," Jessica replied with a faint smile.
Camilla frowned and called William after Jessica went upstairs. "Why are you not home with Jessica? I thought I called you both together? Come back before 12 o'clock." She instructed him sternly. She thought that their relationship was improving, but it was just her wishful thinking. There was nothing going on between the two of them.
After taking a shower, Jessica went to the room that was supposed to be her and William's wedding room. However, there were only a few of her belongings in the room, and William rarely came back to stay there. It felt desolate.
She lay on the sofa, covered herself with a thin quilt, and closed her eyes. After a busy day, she was exhausted. Suddenly, she heard a burst of footsteps, and then the door opened abruptly. William walked in, looking angry.
Jessica opened her eyes and saw William's cold expression. She shrank back instinctively.
William sneered, walked up to Jessica in a few steps, and violently yanked off her quilt. Cold air rushed in, and Jessica sneezed immediately. William's disgust deepened, and he grabbed Jessica's wrist and pulled her toward him. His handsome face was only inches away from hers.
"Jessica, who allowed you to sleep in my room?" he growled.
Jessica's face changed when she smelled a faint perfume on William that wasn't hers.
Suddenly, Jessica's eyes filled with resistance, and she pulled her wrist away from William's grip.
"No, William, I won't let you touch me when you've been with another woman," she said firmly, her voice quivering with anger and hurt.
William's expression darkened, and he grabbed her wrist again, this time even tighter.
"Don't be ridiculous, Jessica. You're my wife, and just earlier today, you even agreed to be my mistress. I can do whatever I want," he said coldly, his breath hot against her face.
But Jessica refused to back down. "No, I won't let you treat me like this anymore. I deserve better than to be your second choice," she said, her eyes blazing with determination.
William's grip on her wrist tightened even more, and she winced in pain. But she refused to back down.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, William released her wrist and stepped back.
"You'll regret this," he said coldly, before turning on his heel and leaving the room.
Jessica collapsed back onto the sofa, her heart racing and her wrist throbbing with pain. But despite everything, she felt a small sense of victory. She had stood up for herself, and for once, she felt like she was in control of her own life. But that was not going to last long. Come morning, she would be at his mercy again, especially if she wanted the land issue to be taken care of by him.
The morning seemed so dreadful!
