Kayla's Point Of View
The next morning I woke up and smiled. It had been the best night of sleep I had in a long time. Since I didn't have to work, I decided to stay in bed and read some more.
The king and his men had returned with news. There were cities not of our own falling to the ground and beings that looked like us but were not like us wondering around. They needed help and we would send our finest to do so while others found a place to call home. So, two groups headed in two different directions and soon our lives began to change.
The beings called themselves humans and they smelled horribly. They were weak and did not heal quickly but we still helped them. The men who went in search of a new home for us had found one and in the matter of months we began to build a new home. Our old home was no longer crushed during the merging of planets but this new place was perfect. It was near the merging of two planets and a giant waterfall was nearby. It was breathtaking.
So for the next few months, we built a new home and soon, are kind was together again. We did, however, find another group of dragon survivors that had lived in the water kingdom and they joined us. Their homes were destroyed as well, but life seemed to fall into place until the humans came.
The smell was horrific and the children cried. They were plastered with dirt on their faces and many were injured. The king ordered them away but they begged for help. They had no home and their land was destroyed. With no food or water on their planet, they had to search for their own and that brought them to us. The only spot with growing fields and water. The rest of the planet was baron. All except in the outskirts, so the king decided to let them stay, but with two conditions. They work for us and do as we say.
Suddenly, there was a knock on my door and I jumped up. I left the book on my bed with the pages facing down and headed to the front door. As I opened the door I saw my mother and smiled. It had been so long since I saw her.
"Mom," I said as I quickly hugged her but she did not return the hug. I backed away and looked at her. "What is wrong?" I asked.
"You have caused shame to this family," She said with tears in her eyes.
"What do you mean?"
"Because of you, your brother, his family and I will starve."
"What do you mean? I have done nothing," I said as I watched tears fall down her face.
"Your brother has lost his job and can no longer provide for his family. We both can no longer get anything from the market or even a job. If you weren't here,"
"If I was not here. If I was not here," I screamed. "You were the one who slept around and got pregnant. I did not ask for this," I yelled.
"You need to leave this place. Your brother is expecting a baby and now they will lose the child if you do not leave."
I looked at my mother and felt nothing but pain on the inside. How could she say that? I stepped away from her and into my house, slammed the door and fell onto my knees as the tears fell. I was completely and udderly alone.
I could hear my mother shouting as I cried but I tuned her out. Soon her screams vanished and I got up. I walked to my room, changed my clothes and looked at the book on the bed, but walked away. I had chores to do and the day of relaxation was ruined because of her. As I walked out into the back yard, a shadow flew over me and I looked into the sky. A giant black and white dragon flew over me and I smiled. I had never seen a dragon like this one before and it was beautiful. I watched as it flew over towards the lake and sat on a giant rock.
Each day I worked on the land but only a small area cleared out. I figured I would till the soil and attempt to see if anything would grow. Carrots grow all year round and it just made sense to start with those.
As the sun began to set, I began to plant the seeds and as the sun disappeared I watered the ground.
"Please, grow," I whispered into the night and walked into the house.
With my daily work done, I grabbed some clothing and headed to the lake to bathe. I wish I had hair shampoo and soap, but I don't have any means to make it. So I wiped the dirty away and pretended to clean my body. I missed the feel of the soap in my hands and the scent of flowers it gave, but most of all I missed the feeling of being clean.
Once I was done, I headed back home and, to my surprise, there was another basket sitting on my front porch. I grabbed it and headed inside. The scent of cooked chicken hit my nose and my stomach began to grumble. I set the basket down and began to remove its contents. There was a beautiful black and gray blanket that smelled like the woods outside and a pair of white house slippers. Under neither those was a plate of food. Chicken, rice and beans. The smell was killing me.
I grabbed the food and began to eat.
