Instead of going back the way Helga and I got to the apple tree, I have her follow me out down the path leading to my home. She looks around, clearly noticing the work I did. “Plant?” she asks me, motioning to me. “Beans!” I tell her excitedly. “And apples,” I say, holding up the apple I’m eating to show her. She smiles and wanders off, talking to herself like she usually does. I’d grown so used to it, and not being able to understand, that I’d almost not realized she was doing it.
