.CHAPTER 39 “Nick!” Willow ran toward him but stopped halfway to the door. “What is it? What’s wrong?” Nick’s face was pale. He appeared almost clammy. Willow took him by the arm and sat him down on the doctor’s swivel chair. “You know,” she began, “I should be wicked mad at you for deserting me like you did today, except you look like you got hit by a truck. What happened?” Her voice was full of tenderness. Nick shook his head. His dreadlocks, usually so animated, hung limp past his shoulders. “I’m a terrible, horrible person.” Willow stood behind him, rubbing his back. “Don’t talk like that. You had a bad day, that’s all. So tell me what the matter is. I’m done lecturing you. Now I just want to help you feel better.” “There are some things I’ve got to get off my chest first.” Nick
