Chapter 12

1494 Words
Lola The next few days are a complete blur. My water magic must still be surging out of me as I can hear the rain falling heavily on the roof above me. I drift in and out of consciousness in an endless slumber constantly dreaming of Theo and our future together. I wake up briefly to see my sister Nova laying on my bed. She is snuggled up beside me reading a book. My eyelids flutter closed as I succumb to the darkness again. * * * The next time I woke up I was all alone. All I could see was my pale blue walls threatening to close in on me. My body shivered with fright in the darkness of the night. I was scared and I could not move a single muscle. I squeezed my eyes shut as I drifted off once more. * * * I opened my eyes some time later to see my father with his arms wrapped around my mother as she wept profusely. How long have I been like this? She must be so scared! I don't know what is happening to me. * * * The next time I woke, there was a stunning arrangement of peonies next to my bed. The only person I knew that could create them was Ivy. She must have come to visit me. I miss her. Before I could think anything else, I drifted back into my slumber. * * * I woke again to find Levi pacing my room with a worried look on his face. "Come on Lola, wake up." He said to himself more than me. "You can fight this, I know you can. It was comforting to know my big brother believed in me. Before I could open my mouth to say anything, my heavy eyelids fluttered closed again. * * * I finally woke from my endless slumber to find Theo sleeping in a chair right next to my bed with his feet resting on my bed. How did he get in here? Levi was going to freak out! I try to sit up in my bed and let out an audible groan. My body feels drained and weak. Theo’s eyes snap open at my sudden movement. “Good morning beautiful. I'm so glad to see you awake.” He murmurs sleepily. Looking out the window, I say, “It looks more like the middle of the night. How long was I out for?” “Three days. Everyone was starting to get really worried you would not wake up at all.” He replies. “I don’t think you should be here.” I state. “It is fine Lola. I spoke to your family and explained everything. Levi is still very suspicious of me which isn't a surprise. Charlotte actually gave me this chair so I could stay with you.” He explains while rubbing the back of his neck. “Theo, that’s not what I meant at all. Kissing you was a mistake. It should have never happened.” “Oh ... I see. Could you at least give me a chance to explain myself?” He asks looking deflated as he takes my hand in his. “Look, I’m just asking for some time to process everything that has happened lately. I've only just woken up and I don't need to be smothered. It is a lot to take in and I need to do what is best for me.” I pull my hand our of his grasp. “I understand. If you could please just let me –“ “Theo please! Do not make this harder than it already is!” I look away from the hurt in his eyes. I do not want to go back on my decision. Theo sits on my bed next to me and grabs my hand again. “This isn’t fair; you aren’t even giving me a chance.” This is the first time his touch has not given me that irresistible feeling. My eyes snap back to meet his and I feel rage bubbling inside me. I snatch my hand back once more. “You want to know what isn’t fair. The way you purposely hid important information from me! You knew this whole time and you kept it from me anyway. How am I ever supposed to trust you again?” Suddenly, my bedroom door opens and Theo jumps off the bed. “I think you need to leave.” Levi says coldly. Theo moves past Levi and stops at the door to look back at me longingly. “I’m so sorry Lola.” He says as he leaves the room. Levi kisses me on the head and exits too. I am left all alone with my thoughts. * * * I desperately tried to go back to sleep to stop the tears pouring down my face. I wanted to run after Theo as soon as he walked away. I had to force every inch of my body not to move and damn did it hurt. Later that morning, my mother came in with a tray of food for me. She saw my blood shot eyes and gasped. She placed the tray on my bedside table and sat on my bed next to me pulling me into a tight hug. I squeezed her with all my strength, which wasn't much. She pulled away after a little while and wiped my eyes with a tissue. “You know you can talk to me about anything Lola. I will always be here for you.” She says soothingly. I muster up all my courage to ask, “When did you know you were in love with father?” She looks a bit shocked at my question. “I knew I loved him when he was my first thought in the morning and my last thought at night. I would even dream about him. He gave me butterflies every time he would enter a room. Your father is a kind and selfless man; he would do anything for those he cares about. Did you know we were only 20 years old when he told me he loved me for the first time? I knew without a doubt in my mind that he was the one I was going to spend the rest of my life with.” She smiles as she reminisces about their past together. “Wow mother, it is like you just took the words out of my mind. I just don’t know what to do about Theo. How can I let him back into my life after everything that has happened?” I ask sadly. “Give yourself some time to think and heal darling. You have the rest of your life ahead of you. You don’t need to rush these things. You will know what to do when the time is right. Would you like me to call Ivy and Jordan to come and keep you company?” “Yes I’d like that.” She stands and walks towards the door. “I love you mother.” “I love you more darling.” She blows me a kiss and closes the door. * * * I am sandwiched in my bed between Jordan and Ivy with a massive bowl of popcorn on my lap. We decided to watch a movie called Love Rosie. It is a love story about two best friends who keep finding themselves wanting to be with the other at the most inconvenient times. As the movie ended, I had tears streaming down my face again. Ivy pulls me into a hug and I sob loudly into her chest. “Everything is going to be alright Lola, you’ll see.” Jordan promises in a small voice as he rubs my back. “You guys, I don’t think I can do this. I’m not strong enough!” My voice cracks. “Nonsense, you are the strongest person I know! He loves you Lola, you know that don’t you?” Ivy says. I nod into her chest. “Did he at least tell you why he did what he did?” Jordan asks. I pull out of Ivy’s hug. “No. I kicked him out before he could explain himself.” “Give him a chance; I am sure he has a very good explanation.” Ivy says. “I know, I just need some time.” I reply. “You take all the time you need. He needs to respect your decision.” Jordan says. “What would I do without you two?” I smile at them, put an arm around each of them and pull them in for another hug. “Let’s watch Harry Potter now!” Jordan says to lighten the mood. “Oh hell yes!” I exclaim. We lay back down on my bed and enjoy my favourite movie.
