Riley.
It is a new day, a new week and the day that my boss is going to resume work. Before the old assistant left, Sam had shown me everything that I needed to know, every single thing about what my job requires me to do.
Actually, I had thought that he was going to tell me that I needed to grab coffee for Mr. Charles every morning and how he hates it when it gets cold, but he didn’t. I had even asked, just to be on the safer side. “Mr. Charles doesn’t take coffee and even if he does, we have a cafeteria that serves all kind of food so you don’t have to buy it elsewhere.” Was Sam’s respond.
At least, I have one issue taken off my back and much more to my shock, I was paid advance to cover up for whatever I needed. Sam said that it was something that the finance department had introduced when they noticed that most of their staffs finds in to adjust to the change of work and mode of transport.
That was enough for me to hire a nanny for a month, even though Sandy had thrown a fit about it and I got few things for the house. The realtor had gotten to me on Saturday, reminding that I needed to pay half of the money for my old house to be able to secure it because they have been getting a lot of offers for it.
If it wasn’t for the fact that I needed to pay the nanny, I would have paid for that first but I am sure that by the end of the month, I would use the rest of my salary to pay for the house, even if it means that I would be left with nothing until the next month.
I dropped the cup of hot tea in my hand as the doorbell rang and I went to get it. “You are here.” I greeted the new nanny with a smile.
She had been here yesterday to get all the instruction that I was going to pass to her since I couldn’t stay for that long this morning. I already have less time on my side to get to work. “The twins are still alive. I have kept their clothes on the vanity stand and some change in case you have to get something.” I instructed.
“Sure, Miss Riley. I will let you know if there is anything.” She smiled back.
I gulped down the rest of my hot tea, burning down my throat and I groaned before throwing the used cup into the sink and I ran out of the house. If I am lucky, I will be able to go get to the bus stop before it arrives else, I would have to take a taxi and that alone, would be expensive.
“I really hope I meet the bus; I can’t spend on the taxi.” I hissed while running out of the apartment.
The caretaker waved her hand at me and I didn’t even get the chance to wave back because I was rushing to get to the bus stop. At least, the bus stop was something that I had considered before getting the house, because it isn’t far from the house.
I am going to miss it because I didn’t get out of the house early. From where I was, I could see the bus door opened and I used all the energy left in me to get to there. I panted hard as I dropped the five-dollar change in the box and the driver smiled at me.
Looking round the bus, I found an empty seat at the extreme end of the bus. It wasn’t what I had wanted but for someone that was late, I could manage and lucky me, that was the last bus stop. I plugged in my ear pods, to avoid having a conversation with any stranger here.
I mean, I could easily say no but I didn’t want to sound rude to anyone. I am not ready to keep new friends or even have acquaintances after all that I had to go through in life. That aside, I don’t even just want to interact with anyone unless it is that much important, then I am good to go.
The music blasted through my ears and for once, I realized why Nana prefers the countryside music. There is something about it that doesn’t match that of the city music. The tone, the lyrics and melody. Everything is just so different about it. Later in the day, I will call Nana and appreciate that she was the one to introduce me to the countryside music, even when I had shown so much dislike for it.
I didn’t realize how far we had gone in our journey until I looked up to see the banner and the bus pulling up. If my conscious didn’t wake me out of my thought, I would have missed my stop. I jumped out the moment the doors were opened.
The huge building of Hudson came into view. I said a silent prayer, because I already know that Mr. Charles wouldn’t fail to do something stupid. “you just have to keep reminding yourself that you are here to work, for the money and nothing else.” I reminded myself, before taking my steps into the building.
The receptionist flashed me a huge smile and I returned it before walking to the elevator. Sam had introduced me to everyone necessary around the office before he had left and then also, he promised that my company identity card would be on my desk this morning because there are places that I can’t have access to without it.
I had more time to get my things ready, most especially myself ready before the place gets filled up. I might as well as grab a coffee from the cafeteria to get myself going. The elevator dinged loudly before it opened.
There wasn’t anyone here at the last floor which favored me more to get myself sorted out.” you are late, Riley.” A deep voice pointed out the moment that I had set my bag on the desk, scaring me out. “you should have been here ten minutes ago.”
I looked up, seeing the only person that would do that. “I didn’t know that the CEO tracks the time that his assistant gets to work, even though she stills has a minute before the agreed time.” I snarled.
“Agreed time?” Mr. Charles raised a brow. “I don’t know what Sam told you but you should know that you have to get to the office before me.”
I rolled my eyes, which I was saved that he didn’t before I mumbled noted to him and acted as if he wasn’t standing in front of me still. I brought out my laptop, setting it in front of the desktop before turning it on.
A pink little box with the name Tiffany & Co. was dropped on the desk. “I saw this and decided to get it for someone but it seemed like it doesn’t suit her taste so you can here.” He said.
“I must say that I didn’t come here to take gifts from you, Sir.” I said professionally. “I am here because I was hired to work, and that is it.” I ended.
If he needed someone to give the jewelry to, I am sure that he has thousands of ladies up his sleeves for that. I am here because of two things, to get the money and also make sure that my name gets taken off the blacklist for good.
