Kalan held still as he watched her on her knees. Rage swirled within him, and he could feel his monster push through him to get to her. His claws shot through his fingernails, and he knew any second now he would roar out of him and rip through Lanarrie’s family for daring to touch her.
Mate! He roared his voice so loud in his head he winced. When he was like this there was no way he could hold him back.
Fuck… he shot to his feet just as Oren walked through the door. He took in what was happening, and came to his side so fast everyone gasped and stopped what they were doing, as if they'd just realized he was there.
“You’ll only make it worse for her,” Oren whispered, placing a calming hand on his shoulder. He turned and addressed the room. “Thank you for a lovely dinner,” he said with a slight bow. He took Kalan’s hand and dragged him out of the room. “Don’t look back,” Oren whispered to him as he continued to walk him out. As they entered the kitchen, Mae blocked their path. She wiped the tears that were flowing down her cheeks and faced him.
“Save my sister,” she begged. Kalan clenched his jaw as the monster doubled his efforts to get out. Kalan could feel that he was losing it. His canines lengthened, and he rumbled as he forced the change on him. Mae gasped as she stared at him. “It’s you. You’re the…” she said so loudly, Oren swooped in and lifted her off her feet.
He turned to him and paused. “Please don’t fight me, Ruhiukar,” Oren begged, calling him by the name he had given his monster the first time he'd seen him. Whenever he used the name, his monster calmed down a little. He let him drag him out of the kitchen while he carried Mae. He let go of him as soon as they entered the guest house.
“It’s you. I saw you in the woods,” Mae said again, pulling his gaze to her. Kalan shook his head. He didn’t mean to reveal himself so soon. But he couldn’t help himself. He looked towards the house. He never thought he would see her again so soon – not in this house anyway. When he met her, she had looked so mystical and wild, like she belonged out there.
“You can’t tell anyone that you saw him,” Oren said, turning around Mae to face him. “You have to keep it a secret.”
Fuck. This was what he was afraid of. If only his father had listened to him. Kalan closed his eyes, wishing he’d never come there. But then he wouldn’t have met his …mate.
“Mae!” he heard her call from outside. “Mae? Where did you go?”
“In here,” Mae said before he and Oren could do anything. Footsteps rushed towards the door. She pushed it open and rushed inside. She froze as her eyes landed on him. Kalan stared at the red mark on her cheek. Rage filled him all over again, and this time he could feel the change come over him without warning.
“Out,” he heard himself say. Oren turned towards him.
“Ruhiukar, not now,” he said, taking a step towards him. He snarled, pointing at the young girl.
“Take her and go.”
“s**t. Don’t do anything that will put Kalan in trouble. He’s been careful for too long for you to mess things up for him now,” Oren said, walking to Mae. He took her hand and pulled her to the door. She resisted as she came close to her sister.
“Go,” she said staring at him. He took a step towards her. She stood her ground, but he could tell she wanted to run away from him.
“Don’t run. You’ll only make me want to chase you, and I wont let you go this time,” he said, coming to a stop next to her. He lifted his hand and touched the mark on her cheek. She winced, but she didn’t pull away from him like he thought she would. The need to comfort her and take her pain away bubbled within him. He stepped closer, and she gasped, pulling away slightly. “Don’t be afraid,” he whispered as he pulled her to him. At first she was stiff in his arms, but the longer he held her close she relaxed. A whimper slipped from her lips. After a while, she stopped crying. His monster receded, satisfied that their mate would be fine.
Take care of our mate, he ordered as he settled deep inside of him.
As if sensing the change, she pulled back and stared at him. He could see the confusion in her eyes as they roamed his face. Silence reigned between them. Kalan suddenly felt self-conscious. He wanted to go and hide, because she saw a part of him only one person had ever seen, but he wasn’t ready to let her go yet. She felt so good being there in his arms. He stared at her rosy lips. He wanted to kiss her so badly, his entire body trembled. As if pulled in by something, he leaned close.
“Please don’t,” she said, stepping away from him.
“Did he scare you?” he asked cautiously. She’s seen nothing but his monster ever since she met her. “He won’t hurt you I promise.”
“I know. It’s you I’m afraid of,” she said, and then turned to walk out of the house. She opened the door. Kalan rushed after her.
He grasped her arm, pulling her to a stop.
“Wait,” Kalan said, confused as hell. “Why are you afraid of me?”
She looked up at the house. Kalan followed her gaze. There was a window overlooking the guesthouse. He could guess what she was afraid of. f**k. He closed his eyes. He didn’t know what her situation was. How she came to be in Lanarrie's with her sister.
“Are you afraid of Lanarrie? I’ll talk to him. He won’t stand in my way. You’re my mate,” Kalan said.
His words seemed to put fear in her. She shook her head frantically, and pulled away from him. She ran through the garden without looking back. He wanted to go after her, but he didn’t want to scare her any further.
Kalan forced himself to stay. He had to be careful if he wanted to win her.

“I’m sorry father,” Aria wailed. Lanarrie stared down at his daughter. He gritted his teeth as he stared at her tears. He paced to his desk and sat down in his massive chair. He continued to stare at her, wishing he could shake some sense into her. He looked around his massive library. Shelves full of old books ran along the entire walls from floor to ceiling. The room was so big that some spaces sat in darkness waiting for the lamps to be lit. This room was his pride. The knowledge collected throughout history, sat in the very room. That's what made his family so valuable to the royal fairy family - the knowledge they'd imparted to the kings of their kingdom. But Lanarrie wanted more. He wanted to be more than one of the oldest families in the fairy kingdom, which was useful once a year when a prince needed to learn about his history before ascending the throne. And was forgotten for the rest of the years. He wanted so much more.
“That was a stupid and useless trick,” he said, leaning his arms over the desk. Her eyes went wide as he loomed over her. She looked down at her clasped hands, shrinking into herself. “A stupid trick that can cause us everything. Do you know how long it took to convince the king to bring his son here? He was ready to break tradition with Kalan. But I convinced him.”
“I know father,” she said in a tiny voice. She looked up at him. “I’m sorry father. I know how much you had to sacrifice in order for me to become his mate.”
“No. You don’t know how many laws and friendships I had to break to bring him and her here,” Lanarrie said in a dark voice. Aria gasped as his eyes burned in a strange red glow. She looked back down in fear. “And you threw it all away because he looked at her? He has to f**k and claim her before he can become yours. What are you going to do then?”
“I’m sorry father,” she cried, going to her knees in front of the desk.
“Go to your room. Don’t come down until you’ve learned to behave like a proper future queen,” he said. Aria scrambled to her feet, and then rushed out of the room. Lanarrie turned to the darkened corner of the room just as the door closed.
“I told you not to sneak into my house,” he said to the vampire, concealing himself in the shadows. Fluvia laughed as he walked out of the darkness. He came to stand in front of him.
“You know I find you fairies entertaining,” he said, making Lanarrie wonder how much of his conversation he heard. He was in alliance with the vampire, but he didn’t trust him. “For your p*****t. The elders thank you for everything,” he said as he placed the vial of the ambrosia he’d been waiting for for weeks. The stuff was addictive, and he was on his last vial. It was a shame he couldn’t find the stuff anywhere. Only the vampires produced it to lace with the human blood they consumed, so it was potent and gave them the strength they needed, since it was hard for them to turn another supernatural being into a blood slave. A supernatural being's blood is more potent than a human's blood.
“I waited for you to show up months ago,” Lanarrie said, snatching the vial. He stared at it as he thought about what he had to do in order to get it. But it was for the greater good of his family. He wouldn’t have done it if the seer hadn’t foreseen Nolan’s daughter, Mystic as Kalan’s mate. He wouldn’t have sacrificed his entire pack in order to bring his daughter here. But it had to be done, so he could break their bond once they were mated. Lanarrie sighed, feeling shame wash over him. Nolan was a great friend.
But it was his own fault for trusting him.
“I was cleaning up, and setting up the new place for the elders. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. The caves around the area are perfect,” Fluvia said, pulling out a chair to sit. Lanarrie stared at him.
“I’m glad to hear that. I guess you and I are done,” he said.
“For now, yes. I know you will come calling,” he said, getting to his feet. Lanarrie clenched his jaw, hoping to never deal with the likes of him ever again. He watched him blend into the darkness. Using his powers, he silently left his house.
