Mystic never imagined that she would return to the place where she lost her mate and was tormented. But when the noble fairy who took her and her sister in calls her back, she has no choice but to honor his wish. But the memories that linger, remind her so much of what she had lost, and how it felt being in the Fairy King's arms...even if it was for a second before all hell broke loose.

1 The past comes calling.
A bloodcurdling scream rent the air, startling her from sleep. Mystic’s eyes flew open as the door of her bedroom flew open to hit the wall. “Wake up! Wake up!” her father shouted. His hand closed around her arm as he dragged her out of “What’s going on?” Mystic asked. She could hear the screams outside. Her pack was being attacked in the middle of the night. “You need to hide,” her father said, not explaining what was happening outside. He dragged her out of her room, along with her sister, and shoved them into the closet in the sitting room. The closet was small, not big enough for both of them. But they were still young, and could squeeze in together. “Take this. Go into the forest where I showed you, cross the border. You will be in fairy land, they won’t come for you then. Give this to any fairy you met. They’ll take you to Lanarrie. He’ll take you in.” Mystic clutched her father’s arms. He shoved the letter in her hands, and pulled away. He closed the doors shut. He took two steps before the front door was shoved open. Mystic winced at the sound they made as they scraped against the wall. It scared her. She clamped her hand on her and her sister’s mouths to keep them from screaming. She could smell the scent of blood, as whoever opened the door walked got closer. She heard more than five sets of feet. There were a lot of them. Mystic sniffed the air again, feeling her wolf rise to protect her as she detected the scent of vampires. Her entire body went cold. There were vampires here…? And they were attacking her pack? Mystic shook her head, because this shouldn't be happening. There are no clans nearby. The whole area was pack land. Where did they come from? “What are you doing here?” her father asked. The rumbled of a growl coated his every word. He was a strong alpha, and he became vicious when his pack and family were threatened. Mystic could tell he was close to turning into his wolf, but there were too many vampires. He won’t be able to fight all of them. Fear filled her at the thought of her father, fighting them all. “Answer me! Your elders were told you are not welcome here. Are you going to encroach on us and kill every werewolf in your path?” “Encroach, decimate, do anything to get what we want. It’s in our nature,” a whispery voice said a few steps away from the closet. Hmmm, Mystic hummed silently in fear. The sound drowned out the screaming and her sister’s cries. She reached for her wolf Zarie, and she could feel her comforting presence deep inside. She pushed through her again, wanting to go out there and fight along side her father. But she couldn't risk her sister. She was still young, and she hadn’t turned into her wolf for the first time yet. “Go back to your elders and tell them that you’re not welcome here,” her father said, still standing his ground. The vampire laughed. “You don’t get it, do you? When the elders let someone like me lose, it means all negotiations are over. And you are doomed,” he said with a manic laugh. “Get the hell off my land or else,” her father said, now his voice was more guttural. He was close to turning. “You can fight. But there’s nothing you can do. Your pack is gone. There’s nothing left out there. There’s only you, and your…daughters,” he said, getting closer. “Did you think you could hide them from us? I can hear their fast beating hearts.” No! Their father screamed, and the snarls of his wolf rent the air. Mae cried. “Shhh,” Mystic wrapped her arms around her to keep her still. But Mae screamed and squirmed trying to get away from her. She held on tight so she wouldn’t get away from her. Mystic didn’t want her to see what was happening to their father. She could hear him fighting. But there were too many vampires for him to fight them alone. He was a strong alpha, with the largest pack. But he was no match for what sounded like twenty full-blooded vampires. “Shhhhh, please don’t cry,” Mystic begged her as tears streamed down her face. She was crying uncontrollably now. Everything suddenly went strangely silent. She held her breath, afraid to make the smallest sound. And then the doors of the closet were opened. Mae screamed as the large bloody vampire came into view. His fangs dripped with blood. She passed out in her arms as the vampire reached for them. He paused and dropped his hand. “Come out, little girls,” he said, taking a step back. Mystic tightened her arms around her sister and carried her out. She made sure not to look where her father was lying on the floor. She shivered as she waited for the vampire to do whatever he wanted. Before he could move, another one walked in. He paused at the door, before he walked deeper into the house. “Vicker?” he said cautiously. The other vampire turned to him. “What?” “Leave them. They’re only children,” he said as he came to a stop next to them. “You know we don’t leave any witnesses, Cassia” he said, taking a step towards Mystic. Mystic closed her eyes, waiting for the blow to fall. But all she felt were whispery fingers touching her forehead. “They won’t be witnesses. I’ll erase their memories. They won’t remember this night. It will be like their father sent them away to a land full of fairies and magic,” Cassia said. Mystic felt a slight pressure in her skull. She winced, but it only lasted for a few minutes. He moved to do the same to Mae, but Vicker grasped his arm. “Don’t use your gift. You know how Fluvia is about that. He’s waiting for you to make one mistake so that he can remove you as one of the elders,” Vicker said. “It’s already done. Don’t worry. They won’t throw me away when I have you,” Cassia said with a laugh. “Yeah. Pray I never become useless to them. They can only tolerate my crazy ass for so long.” Mystic stared at them, wondering when they showed up in her house. She had to go. Her father sent her away with Mae. She clutched her close, taking a step forward. She walked to the door in a daze. She didn’t see the c*****e around her. All she saw was her beautiful pack. The mist that formed over the tips of the trees and the dew that fell to the ground just before dawn. And the row of white cabins along the stream. There was nothing bad around her. Only good things. And she'll find fairies and magic where her father was sending her and her sister. She kept walking, heading to where her father told her to go. “We should just kill her. What if she comes back, and cause trouble? The elders won’t like that,” she heard the one called Vicker say. “She’ll never come back. She’ll miss her home, but she’ll never have the desire to come back. Come, we have work to do before the elders arrive,” he said. Mystic woke up with a scream on her lips. She trembled as she looked around her. She breathed a sigh of relief when she realized she was still in her cabin. Her eyes landed on Hayley on the couch. She was staring directly at her in the semi-darkness. She refused to go to her cabin, saying something about being scared after what happened with Myalagin. But she didn’t look scared now. Fuck, she was scary, Mystic thought as she got out of bed. “You were having a nightmare,” she declared, sitting up. Mystic nodded as she walked to the side of the kitchen. She opened the tap and poured herself some water. She drank the water down, thinking about what she had dreamed. That was a strange dream. But it felt so real, like a memory. “What did you dream about?” Hayley asked, staring at her. Mystic shook her head. She didn’t want to talk about it, especially because she wasn’t so sure it was a dream. Just like the vampire said. She hasn’t had the desire to go back home. She missed her pack…but she… She shook her head, because that meant her father was dead too. There was no one left …she was all alone, now that she discovered that her sister was dead too. She thought she would find her. All the years of searching. All gone. She shook her head, blinking the tears that filled her eyes. “It was that bad, huh?” Hayley said, sounding sympathetic. Mystic stared at her. She has been behaving strangely lately. “Stop being nice. I like it when you’re mean,” she said as she went to sit on the couch beside her. Hayley laughed at her. Mystic dropped her head on the back of the couch and sighed. “You told me to be nice. So…” she said with a shrug. “Are you alright?” “I will be,” she said, closing her eyes. She could still hear the screams of her pack as they were being ravaged by vampires. Mystic pushed the dream away. Hayley shook her arm to get her attention. “What?” “I think there is someone outside,” she said, pointing to the window. The moon shone through the curtains, and they could see the shadow of whoever was standing out there. Mystic felt fear stab her inside, the dream was still fresh in her mind, making her more terrified. She got up, and reached for her sword on the coffee table. Hayley followed her to the door. She sniffed the air, trying to figure out who it could be. But the breeze wasn’t blowing in the direction of the door and the window was closed. All she could pick up in the air was Hayley’s scent. “Who’s there?” She asked as she closed her hand on the door handle. She heard whoever it was move to the door. “Apologies for arriving so late, but its urgent. Lanarrie has called for you,” he said. Mystic paused at his words. She never imagined that the day would come – the day that Lanarrie, the noble fairy who took her and her sister in, would call her back. Not after what happened with her, Kalan and his daughter Aria. Mystic bit the inside of her mouth confused. Why was he calling her back now?
