Chapter Five: Annoying The Hell Out Of Me

1845 Words
Sawyer The warm summer night was thick with tension as I watched the outside world from the window of my office in the pack house. I was on the edge, the events of the last hours slowly getting to me and there was no doubt in my mind, that I looked like I had aged ten years in just a mere day. There were bags under my eyes the size of a tennis ball as I was reading the reports about the attack Jonah gave me earlier. My eyes were running through the blasted papers and the black little words mocking me. I was not able to comprehend anymore as they were jumping and letters changing right in front of my eyes. I was frustrated, angry and so bloody tired as it was already in the middle of the night, but despite that, the whole pack was up and on alert. My disability was showing more brightly now that I was unfocused and needed to gather the information faster than usual. F*cking hell! I slammed my fist against the table angrily trying to release some of the tension. In the morning, I will be leaving for The Raising Sun Coven to visit the Oracle who had the prediction. That could help us find out the reason behind these attacks and hopefully, we will also be gathering some useful information or clues about Lucas. My wolf Soren was restless inside me, whining loudly and not really helping the already hard situation. I didn´t understand why Soren and I were usually in synch, knowing each other’s personalities, strengths, and weaknesses. We were one after all, two peas in a pod or whatever. ´Will you just shut up?´ I asked him annoyed, but he just growled back without answering me. Weird, Soren was normally very chatty. I didn´t have time to think about his unusual behaviour when, suddenly, the door of my office slammed open as Jonah invited himself inside, an excited look on his face. Maeve came in shortly after him with an annoyed expression plastered all over her face. I could kind of relate to that. “So little birdy told me that we are going to visit the Oracle at The Raising Sun Coven, is that right?” Jonah asked, his light green eyes shining and his lips curled in a wicked smile. He looked a bit like a crazy person. At that moment, I felt an intense need to kill that singing bird, whoever it was. I already had a lot on my plate as it was, and I knew Jonah as back of my hand. I knew very well what this glint meant and I didn´t like it one bit. “Yeah, you´re not going.” I stated seriously, as I was in no mood for bullsh*t. “What? But I want to see the witches!” he pounded like a little bratty pup that didn´t get the sweets. The only thing missing was for him to stomp his foot on the ground and the image would be perfect indeed. “That´s a pity!” I said without any remorse whatsoever, “You need to stay and take care of the pack. Something new from Archer?” I explained calmly and tried to change the topic as quickly as possible. “Come on Sawyer, your dad can do it,” he suggested, wiggling his eyebrows playfully, but continued to answer my question after I sent him a glare, “No, they still follow the track of the rogues and are waiting for Knox´s trackers to join them,” he said with monotone voice as he gave me the report, before getting back to his annoying self. “Anyway, I heard the witches at the coven are really hot,” he emphasised the word really. “I heard they are arrogant, unfriendly and not particularly clever,” chimed Maeve, swirling the strand of her pastel purple hair around her finger. Jonah turned to her with eyebrows raised, “Your point? As long as they have a hot body, I don´t care how high their IQs are. We are not going to play the chase quiz show together,” he scowled. “Manwh*re,” Maeve coughed slightly, at which Jonah laughed loudly and I just rolled my eyes watching them bickering like two teenage pups. “I cannot wait for someone to get you in line! I just hope it will hurt!” Maeve spat, her hazel eyes glaring at Jonah, who just snorted loudly and waved his hand at her. “Yeah, yeah sure. Whatever gets you sleep at night,” he dismissed her. “Are you done?” I asked, my level of annoyance rising rapidly every minute I spent listening to them. Oddly enough, I felt more at ease, the tension decreased as I was listening to their nonsense banter. I didn´t wait for them to answer, “It doesn´t matter if they are hot or not, we are going there to visit the Oracle and hopefully it will help us with the attacks and Lucas´s kidnapping.” I concluded with my most serious face and tone. “Yeah, I know…,” said Jonah, sounding regretful, which changed the atmosphere to a bit melancholic. However, it didn´t take long for Jonah´s eyes to sparkle again with mischief. “But banging a few witches would also help you release some tension. I mean I can see the vein about to pop on your forehead,” Jonah laughed and quickly dived down as I threw my stapler at him. “Even if they are hot, why would they want to have anything to do with you?” asked Maeve, smirking. “Who would resist this?” Jonah said, gesturing to himself as Maeve rolled her eyes and gave him a finger. “Unfortunately, all the magic will disappear once you open your mouth,” she laughed, and I couldn´t help to chuckle too. “They will be begging once I open my mouth and use it right,” Jonah stated confidently with a smirk on his face. “Eww!” squeaked Maeve and I saw her shudder as a disgusted expression appeared on her face. I face palmed myself on Jonah´s remark which assured me, that I had done the right thing by not taking him with me on this mission. “Oh, come on Sawyer, don´t act like a Virgin Mary,” he had the audacity to roll his eyes. With Soren's constant growling, my head was pounding like crazy and I was already tired and angry even before Jonah came over and added more fuel to that. “You will be a Bloody Mary if you don´t shut up!” I spat through gritted teeth, my eyes flashing yellow shortly, but instead of following my orders like a normal wolf, he just chuckled, which made me even angrier. “What got your knickers in twist? You need to get laid my friend,” Jonah concluded nonchalantly. “Piss off!” I growled, he was annoying the hell out of me, but at least I forgot about reading the stupid papers. “Damn it! I promise to behave alright? I won´t bang any witch,” he pleaded with puppy dog eyes and I just shook my head, not believing any word that came out of his mouth at that point. Jonah was a responsible Beta, a strong warrior, and great friend, but he was also rather easy to distract when around pretty women. The last thing I wanted was to cause any havoc when visiting the coven and having a horny wolf running around chasing witches that alone asked for trouble. “Jonah, we will only visit the Oracle and then we will get back.” I explained to him as I tried to remain calm. “Is the Oracle old and ugly?” he pushed and, for some inexplicable reason, my wolf rumbled angry, scratching, and growling inside my head, ready to pounce at Jonah if I let him. ´What the fvck Soren!´ I growled back at him, but he just continued to rumble without any reaction whatsoever. ´Are you ignoring me now?´ “I don´t know Jonah! I forgot to ask for a picture!” I snapped at him sarcastically. “Alright, alright chill!” he grumbled and put his hand up, “So who is coming apart from you of course?” “Maeve, Rhys, Spencer and Ian.” I told him and saw his ears perked up at Maeve´s name before he turned in her direction and sent her a deadly glare. He tried to open his mouth, but I had enough already. “You are really testing my patience right now,” I growled in warning, but as per usual, he didn´t give a damn. “What if my mate is there?” he pushed, while Maeve just snorted in really unlady-like matter, “Please,” she rolled her eyes at him. “It is very rare to be mated to other species, you know it,” I said and held my hand as soon as I saw him open his mouth, “But if you so desperately want to find your mate, you can always go to visit after we solve this problem.” “You are no fun Sawyer,” he complained like a damn five-year-old. “I am an Alpha, I am not meant to be fun.” And with that I finished the conversation, or so I thought. “But Spencer and Ian also don´t have mates... and Rhys is the biggest flirt,” Oh Goddess, please give me strength before I strangle him, “At least they are not behaving like a bunch of horny teenagers.” Chimed Maeve with a giant smile, earning another deadly glare and finger from Jonah. “Okay, that is about enough, end of conversation,” I stated with my dominant Alpha voice that left no room for arguments. “Now give me the report on the south border,” I listened to Jonah as he repeated everything that was written in those damned papers and I felt myself grow a bit relaxed knowing I didn´t need to read it. Maeve added some new information from the pack hospital about the warrior´s current state, which was all good as they were healing properly without any complications. That was good to hear, at least something positive. They both left shortly after to get some sleep as we will be leaving tomorrow not wasting precious time. I pinched the bridge of my nose. At least Soren finally stopped growling and huffing, so my headache got a little bit better and I was able to think again.
