Sawyer
´Alpha! ´ one of my warriors Ian mind-linked me as I made my way back towards the pack house after I sent Maeve to help Jonah with the report and to tell him what we found out about Lucas.
´Yes? ´ I responded to him, walking through the front door, seeing Ian coming down the stairs towards me with an unreadable expression on his face.
“There is a call for you at your office. They said it´s important.” Ian informed me as I joined him on the walk towards my office.
Ian was one of my best warriors, calm, collected, precise, strong and undoubtedly loyal. His dark reddish-brown eyes contrasted strongly against his light blond, almost white hair.
“Who is it?” I wondered, surprised that someone was calling at this hour as it was after midnight.
“Witches,” Ian whispered, “High Priestess Georgiana to be more concrete,” he finished, his voice void of emotions.
I stopped at my track turning around to look at him confusion written all over my face.
What the hell?
Why would the witches call? This night was starting to be more and more disturbing by second.
Witches and wizards were humans born with the ability to use magic. They were one of the most powerful magic creatures as they all have power to cast spells, create potions, to locate beings anywhere in the world using crystals, blood spells or personal belongings.
The special powers were abilities to control elements such as pyrokinesis, chlorokinesis, hydrokinesis, stricidium or teleport. Witches inherited their magical powers through bloodlines within their family. Therefore, a witch or wizard descended from a unique bloodline may possess powers that cannot be replicated by other witches or wizards.
The only few selected possessed the power of telekinesis, the ability to manipulate objects, astral projection, the ability to separate their own soul from the body, levitation, the ability to propel oneself into the air or the power to extract life force from others. The ability to manipulate the flow of time was one of the rarest of powers not seen for centuries.
Let´s just say, they were very powerful and dangerous. Fortunately, most witches and wizards were good white witches that would never use power for evil purposes, even though dark witches or warlocks still existed, they were not seen for many years now.
I had the pleasure of meeting a couple of witches in my life, even before I became an Alpha. My father used to take me to magical congresses where the leaders of packs, covens, kingdoms, and clans would meet once a year to discuss matters of importance.
I attended for the first time alone last year as the new Alpha of the Wolf Moon Pack and met a few of the coven leaders as not all of them were present at the time. The one missing was the mentioned High Priestess Georgiana, the leader of The Raising Sun Coven.
I shook my head to get back to reality and continued walking down the hall quickly to hear what that spell caster had to say.
Witches are usually very reserved and adamant about using human technology, claiming that it disturbs their magic, but on the same rare occasions or pressing matters, they would use it.
I was rather shocked that they were able to swallow whatever came up crawling in the arses and called using phone. Something serious must have happened for them to call, that´s for sure.
“Alpha Sawyer speaking!” I snapped, irritated as I took the phone, even though I should be more respectful in the presence of a high-ranked Witch.
“Alpha Sawyer, this is High Priestess Georgiana from The Raising Sun Coven.” She spoke with a very calm but strict voice, emitting respect and confidence.
I signed deeply trying to calm myself, I for sure didn´t want anymore trouble that I already had.
“Yes, High Priestess, what can I do for you?” I asked, sounding more in control.
“Pardon me for calling at this ungodly hour but I must deliver very important information,” I could detect a slight urgency in her voice, making me wonder what on Earth happened.
“Very well, I´m listening.” I confirmed and I did listen to everything she had to say.
At the end of her storytelling, I felt my hand that was holding the mobile phone shaking.
“You´re telling me that there is an Oracle in your coven that had some kind of prediction about multiple attacks on werewolf packs and their slaughter? And not only that but also the kidnapping of one of my pack members?” I asked with a possible hint of sarcasm in my voice.
“That is correct, Alpha. It might sound impossible, but I assure you that it is true. The Oracle´s prediction always comes true in the end and those unfaithful are the first ones to fall,” she said calmly, but I could hear the warning in her voice.
It wasn´t malicious, on the contrary it sounded a bit desperate.
I had to take a few deep and slow breaths to calm down and put myself together to start thinking clearly, it wasn´t like I had any other leads so far and if this Oracle is right, then we were in a bigger mess than I had originally thought. Something deep inside me was urging me to go, luring me to seek the invisible string that was attached to that place.
Soren was howling in agreement with the thought of visiting the coven, which I couldn’t understand, but we were always told to follow our wolf’s instinct.
I didn´t really have a choice, did I?
“Alright, I´ll be there tomorrow...,” I said, turning on my chair and glanced at the big antique clock on the wall behind me, seeing it was already after midnight, “or rather later today.” I added, hearing as the woman on the other side sighed in relief and I could hear someone else talking to her in the background, but it was not coherent.
Although Soren´s ears perked up a bit at the sound of another voice as he was alerted, trying to listen to more of it.
“Very well, see you soon, Alpha Sawyer. Have a good night!” Said High Priestess Georgiana and I mentally scowled as I bit her farewell.
After disconnecting the call from the High Priestess, I had another important call to make. This time to my good friend and neighbour, Alpha Knox of Blue Moon Pack. I dialled a known number and waited for him to pick it up. I hoped he was not asleep already, but after a few rings I heard a gruff voice on the other side of the call.
“Alpha Knox speaking,” the rough voice of my friend announced itself, seemingly not pleased with interaction in the middle of the night.
“Knox, this is Sawyer.” I said to the phone, unbothered by his obviously irritated voice. I was far beyond the courtesy of not calling in the middle of the night.
“Sawyer, it´s always nice to hear you, but isn´t it a bit too late for a booty call?” Knox grunted and I could hear him yawing in the background.
I snickered at his comment, shaking my head.
“Sorry to disturb your beauty sleep Knox, but there was another attack, this time on my pack. No casualties by my side, but one pup is missing, and rogues are dead or on the run,” I informed him with a stoic voice, even when inside I was raging with anger.
“s**t!” he grumbled, now more alerted, “Dead wolves tell no tales. How can I help you?” he sighed, now sounding more awake.
“Archer and my trackers are following the rogues while the tray is still fresh. Can you send some of your tracker wolves?” I explained, knowing that the Blue Moon Pack had the best trackers in the country.
“Sure, already on it. Just send me Archer´s location and my trackers will join them,” Knox said, now in full Alpha mode.
“Thanks, I owe you one.” I said with relief in my voice.
I knew if I had Knox and his trackers' support, we could catch the rogues easier. It made my stress level decrease a little bit.
“Don´t mention it,” he said, and I could imagine him waving his hand, I knew him too well as Knox and I grew up and trained for Alphas together. He was a strong, bold, ruthless and dominant Alpha. I said farewell and disconnected the call, going into Alpha mode and mind-linking Archer immediately about his location.
´Archer?´ I sent the mind-link to my Head Warrior and waited for his answer.
´Yes, Alpha?´ Archer answered after a few seconds.
His voice laboured as if he was running at the time of the conversation.
´Report !´ I ordered via mind-link as I connected with him. I was able to communicate with my pack members even when they were not in the pack and at longer distances.
Perks of being the Alpha. During the running and tracking, there was no time to call or send messages, so such an advantage as mind-link was priceless.
´We are approximately fifty minutes south-west of road 55 near Glemington, the trace is still fresh. Seems like they haven´t even bothered to cover it yet, which is strange,´ he said, and I could feel an uneasy feeling through the pack-bond.
Rogues wolves were generally more reckless and daring, not necessarily dumb or futile. On the contrary, they could be very resourceful, calculative and creative. Some of them were also shady, manipulative, corrupted, vicious, so you should never underestimate them in any situation. It could very well be the last thing you would do.
´Okay, Knox is sending his tracker to help you. I will be leaving for witches' coven in the morning. We may have a lead there, so also report to Jonah, alright´ I asked Archer.
´Okay, what´s the deal with coven?´ Archer asked, intrigued.
It wasn´t every day that we associated ourselves with witches.
´The Oracle there seems to have a prediction that may help us, so we will go to check it out. I will tell you more later. In the meantime, be careful.´ I explained to my friend already tipping the location information and sending it to Knox in text message as I mind-linked him.
Talk about multitasking.
´Sure mum,´ Archer said teasingly, making me smile a bit, because I knew the ones who should be careful were the ones that would be unfortunate enough to meet in combat with Archer.
´Piss off,´ I cut the link with Archer after hearing him snicker and went to go through reports lying on my office table that obviously Jonah left there while I was at Dean and Emma´s house earlier.
I mind-linked the warriors that will be going with me to the coven in the morning to be ready to take off. I will be bringing three of my most trusted warriors and my Gamma Maeve. I decided that Jonah, as Beta and my deputy, would be taking care of the pack as long as we were at the coven.
With Archer gone following the rogues, Jonah will be the only high-ranking wolf from my inner circle here, therefore, in charge of the pack. I trusted Jonah with my life, and I knew he would do a great job taking care of the pack while I was gone, so at least one of my worries would be taken care of.
I stood up from my chair, walking towards the window, opening it to let the fresh summer night air inside. Apart from a small lamp on my office desk, the room was dark. I let the air fill my lungs, breathing it in and out, hoping to take away the tension from my body.
It was not just me, I felt my wolf Soren going restless inside my mind and I had a feeling it wasn´t just because of the attack. No, he had been nagging me since the call from the High Priestess, but I didn´t know why. Something important was about to happen.
I could feel it in my bones.
