Ch.9 ~ This is what we live for

1125 Words
Wilona's POV After departing with Adam at the gymnasium, I took the path that led me home and greeted at a she-wolf I met along the way. So many thoughts gone through my mind, thinking about my life and what is yet to come. I can always believe that I was prepared, but life is unpredictable. ‘What if it’s something that will happen four years from now?’ Aiyana piped in, staring into space. ‘I don’t want to dwell on it.’ I replied, feeling the morning warm air caressed my skin. The feeling of the sun was pleasant, like a sunny winter's day. She barked in understanding. My heart skipped with worry when I arrived and found mom pacing the limestone porch. She was raking her brunette hair frustratedly. She only does it when something bad has happened. I rushed to her, watching her face contort into sadness when she sees me. “Wilona.” She spread her arms and squeezed me. I held her hand and led her to the straw sofa. I even forgot about calling Zara. “What happened?” I asked, searching her blue eyes. “Laila is in hospital and it’s bad.” She lowered and pulled her eyebrows closer together. “She is in pain and needs surgery.” Mom has a very soft spot for children in the orphanage, and Laila is her favourite. I wonder why she hasn’t adopted her yet. “I am so sorry, mom. Is there anything I should do to help?” I rubbed her hand soothingly. She shook her head no and rested on my shoulder with a sigh. We sat in silence, listening to the birds’ tweet joyfully. “Why don’t we go inside to eat?” I broke the silence. “You can go ahead, and please tell Netta I will have my breakfast right here on the porch.” Mom told me, all tension leaving her body. I was about to turn and enter the house when my dad’s roar rang through the mind-link. ‘Amedeo, get your sister and everyone to the bunker… NOW!’ I flinched, my eyes widened at mom. ‘Just shift into me already and I will do the rest.’ Aiyana howled in excitement. ‘Who attacks the pack at?’ ‘Stop stalling, Wilona.’ Aiyana interjected. “Don’t resist your wolf and please be careful out there.” Mom spoke, getting me out of my squabble with Aiyana. She quickly stood up and called everyone in the house to follow her. I stepped back, staring at her with determination and without a word, I jogged out of the porch, shifting into my wolf. Sprinted into the forest. ‘I don’t even know where they are.’ I grunted with worry. ‘Just give me full control.’ Aiyana chirped. ‘Wilona, I love you and I will do everything in my strength to protect you.’ She continued, feeling my doubts. ‘I love you too.’ I told her as I closed my eyes and let her lead. Her dark grey fur brushed through the thick grass as the ground crunched under our paws. I listened to her heavy breathing as she sprints through the forest. She halted when we reached the southern border. Where we found scouts everywhere fighting unknown wolves. The sound of their groans resonated the air. I examined the area, looking for my dad’s grey wolf, but he was nowhere in sight. ‘This is what we live for.’ I told Aiyana, and she barked in agreement. Getting ready to join in the fight. ‘Luca, how many are there still coming?’ Dad grumbled. ‘This is just the lot of them.’ I heard Luca respond. Something caught my senses. ‘Aiyana, what’s that smell?’ I cringed when a bitter smell hit her snout. ‘They smell like rotten meat.’ She growled. I remained still, trying to distinguish the smell, and silently followed it. A huge brown wolf with lifeless eyes circled us; his muzzle curled backwards, showing his filthy teeth. I watched it as we stiffly move, waiting for it to attack us first. When his ears flapped, we jumped at it and collided with it in the air. It stretched, claw aiming for my neck and ducked, finding my balance. We circled each other with bared teeth. I let my aura flow out, but it didn’t seem bothered. I hunched low, staring at its belly, and scraped my extended claws at its dirty matted fur as it leapt over me. ‘Aiyana, all the wolves are changing direction.’ ‘Wilona, you were supposed to be with the others at the bunkers.’ Dad’s voice thundered through the link. Stopping me from talking further. The wolves shifted to our side and attacked us. Their peculiar behaviour caught my eye. Dad and the four scouts slashed through a few that surrounded me. I looked at the one whimpering on the ground in its pool of blood. Its eyes glazed from red to white. ‘Dad, something is not right with these wolves.’ Those were the words I uttered when a sharp bite on my shoulder startled me. The wolf shook its muzzle, aiming to rip me to pieces. Aiyana yelped and her weight slacked to the side as she fell with a thump. We laid on the ground, watching dad s***h the wolf on its neck. Killing it instantly. He shifted and slid next to me. “SHIFT.” He ordered with a growl. I felt the cool breeze crawling on my skin as I shivered in pain. “Oh, Wilona, you were not ready for this.” Dad brushed my head before scooping me in his arms. Making me scream and feeling the burn overwhelming my body. “I… wanted… to… Hel… p.” I shuddered. “I know. Just don’t close your eyes, the car is almost here.” His forehead gleamed with sweat. “Alpha, all the wolves died, and we took the one we captured to the prison.” I heard Luca’s deep voice speak with a groan. Is he hurt as well? I asked myself. Listening to dad panting with every step. “Let’s… get Wilona to the hospital…” He breathed. “… then will talk about what happened after.” “Yes, Alpha.” Luca heaved a heavy sigh. I gazed at the cloudy sky, squirming in discomfort as dad rushed through the forest, heading to the gravel road. I felt my eyes getting heavy. “Hold on Wilona.” He grunted; his dark brown eyes glistened with worry. I smiled as I let my eyes drop and all I could hear at the back of my mind was Aiyana’s whimper before letting myself fall into oblivion.
