Chapter Eight

Dan. Why was she looking at me like that? She didn’t know what happened to me unless…. Of course, how was Evelyn not going to know what was happening in this mansion? She’s like a mini CCTV camera that knows what’s happening, where it’s happening, and how exactly it’s happening. Evelyn knows it all. So it shouldn’t be a surprise that she knew about this, but what I couldn’t figure out was why she kept it away from me. Was she trying to protect her big brother? A snort left my mouth, of course, she would protect her brother after all, they were of the same blood while I was just the stepbrother. “Don’t look at me like that.” She whispered bringing my attention back to her. “Like what?” I asked. “Like you’re trying to come up with different and unreasonable assumptions about this. Look I didn’t do this because I want you to hurt Dan, I only didn’t tell you because I….I.” She stammered. “You what Eve? You knew Lucas and Erica were having an affair behind my back and you didn’t even think of telling me. I thought I was your brother?” I asked with a pained look. She nods her head frantically, “Of course, you’re my brother Dan. You’re and still are, I didn’t tell you because I don’t want to see you hurt.” Her voice was low, head down. I guess she was embarrassed by this. She wouldn’t have kept this away from me, I’d the right to know. I had the right to know my so-called girlfriend was cheating on me with my stepbrother behind my back. If I had known I wouldn’t have committed myself to a relationship that wasn’t working. Then her words from earlier resounded in my head; ‘You can leave now Dan but don’t say that I did not warn you.’ Right, she did give me a warning. Note the sarcasm. “I didn’t mean to keep it from you, Dan, I knew how much you love Erica…” I quickly added. “Loved.” It was in the past now. She’s no longer in my future and I would be the most pathetic fool on earth if I kept on loving her. Evelyn paused then took in a deep breath, “Right, I knew how much you loved her Dan. She was like the whole world to you and she’s the only one who could make you happy apart from me and dad of course.” She added. Yeah, Eve was right. Erica was my world, she was the one who kept me striving. I had lost all hope of living after mom’s death but then she came in like a walking ball of sunshine, she enveloped my dark world with her light and unknowingly I fell in love with her. Fell into her scheme. A tired sigh left my mouth, after what happened all I wanted to do was go take a bath and then wrap myself in my bed until I was able to face the world the next day. I looked at Evelyn who was fiddling with her finger with guilt, I knew this wasn’t her fault. She didn’t mean to keep this away from me and in as much as I’m trying to stay mad at her I couldn’t help but feel happy at the same time. She was ready to keep this from me because she wanted to see me happy, and that somehow took every anger I had in me. “When did you find out about this Evelyn? And how long have you known?” I asked. I couldn’t help it, even though I said I wasn’t going to let Erica and Lucas get to me I couldn’t help but want to know how long this had been going on. “I found out on my thirteenth birthday Dan.” He didn’t need to tell me how long it had been, I’d already done the calculations. If she’d started cheating on me since Evelyn was thirteen then that means they have been seeing each other for three years now. Wow, I was a love-struck fool for me not to notice. Of course, all those times Erica would come over for dinner and took it upon herself to always get Lucas down was just a show. Only god knew what they did in his room before coming downstairs. Another heavy sigh left my mouth, I looked at Evelyn and forced a smile. “You can leave now Eve, don’t worry about me I’m fine.” I will be fine. I told myself. She looked at me with her eyes wide open, “What, you aren’t mad? You aren’t mad at them, at me?” She asked and I shook my head. “No Eve, I’m not.” She looked at me with a face that said; ‘you can’t be serious’ “I’m serious Eve, I’m not mad at you or them.” “Why? Why aren’t you mad? That’s your girlfriend you’ve been dating for years now Dan and you just caught her cheating on you but you aren’t going to do anything.” She yelled angrily. I could see that she was angry, angry at me. I smiled this time, “There’s nothing that I can do Eve. She said she didn’t love me anymore so what else could I do than let her be with the one she’s in love with? I’m fine if that’s what you’re bothered about. Trust me, before tomorrow I will be back to my old self and you can come trouble my life all you want.” I joked but I didn’t get any reaction from her. She was staring at me skeptically, she wasn’t believing my act. I walked closer and then placed my hand on her shoulder, I made her look me straight in the eye as I said. “Don’t worry about me, Eve. I will be fine.” I whispered. She closed her eyes for a while before opening them and gave a nod. “I won’t say anything to anyone Dan, and also I’m going to leave now but please don’t kill yourself over her.” She ordered and a low chuckle left my mouth. What the hell is she thinking? “Really? Kill myself?” I questioned and she shrugged. “It’s quite common these days and I don’t want you to do it.” “Alright little monster, I promise I won’t kill myself,” I said with a teasing smile. She rolled her eyes and then went ahead to pick up her phone and some other things from my bed. She didn’t say anything until she got to the door. “Have a good sleep Dan and know that Erica was too ugly for your handsome self.” And with that, she was gone. I laughed at her words.
