CHAPTER 13 Night fell like a dropping curtain. Within five minutes, daylight became darkness that was completely black for no moon, stars or artificial lights except their own shone. In the five hours since leaving Prickle, the land had changed to rolling hills but still with a road that they could follow. Nearby, the forest appeared to be natural with no intelligent creepers but as Kevin warned, there was no certainty about this. After driving another half an hour, they arrived at a small river with a wooden bridge across it. Though only one lane, it looked wide enough for the car to fit onto and appeared to be built on solid foundations. On their side was a track that ran down to a circular area of short grass and overhanging trees. "We are hungry and tired," Susan said. "Let's stop f
