CHAPTER SIX Remi was beginning to feel frustrated that they weren’t getting anywhere in the case. She had gone through both of Oliver Ruggles’s accounts more thoroughly and found nothing. After that, she had gone through as much of his writings as time allowed. They were a mess: poorly organized, with notes and disjointed paragraphs, not helped by the subject matter, which was both obtuse and poorly referenced. Remi had trouble making any sort of sense out of it. While she still had no idea who murdered him or for what reason, she got a sense why he hadn’t succeeded as an academic. But why kill such a seemingly unimportant man? There had to be a reason. It was now night, and Remi and Daniel had adjoining rooms in a motel beside Interstate 81 just outside Cortland.
