As I take my seat at the lunch table, I look between Zach and Demitri who are sitting across from each other having a stare down. Both seem to be sizing the other one up and down, and both seem to be doing their best not to attack the other. “Okay… So, do either of you two want to discuss with me what just happened?”
Cheyenne looks straight at me with a confused look on her face when Demitri asks the most random question in the world. “Emily… When is your eighteenth birthday?”
I look between the two of them and c**k my head to the side. “It is next week. This Friday is Cheyenne’s and then a week from her birthday is my birthday. We are having a party this weekend for her if you two want to know.”
Zach growls low and then asks another random question. “Emily, how long have you known us?” His Australian accent is thick and his normally baby blue eyes are black. Like he is trying to fight his wolf.
I swallow and sit back in my chair. “Hmm… Let me think. My dad took over the elected position before I was born. Since then, I can never remember a time of us not knowing each other. He created the Amalgamate schools and university in order for me to get to know all of the future world leaders better. Why do you ask?”
Demitri hisses again and then turns towards me. “So, why, my darling, did you not tell us those girls have been bullying you?”
I swallow hard and feel another blush creep up my cheeks. My darling? I can’t remember Demitri ever calling me that. “Well… I… Uh… Hmm… Cheyenne?”
She shakes her head hard and holds up a hand. “Don’t drag me into this. I have been telling you for years to tell them, but no, you never wanted to listen to me.”
I sigh as Demitri hisses low and Zach growls just as low. I look up and see two pairs of very angry eyes staring into my soul. Zach speaks first. “Emily, dear, why didn’t you tell us? You and Samantha are roommates, for Goddess’s sake! I arranged that myself!”
I swallow hard and c**k my head to the side. “You did…?”
Zach growls in frustration and runs a hand down his face. “Yeah, mate, I did!” He looks at me with huge eyes. “Why didn’t you tell us? If we would have known, we would have made it so you and Cheyenne would share a room!”
“We…? Wait a second, who are we? And why are you two so suddenly concerned about my social life here at school! It isn’t like I am your fated mate. I can’t be fated to both of you.” I sit back in my chair and start picking at my salad.
Demitri clears his throat and sighs. “We can talk more about this at a later date. For now, we should all eat and then head to our next classes. Zach… I would like to talk to you privately as well.”
Zach nods his head. “Yeah, mate. I want us to talk privately too. For now, I think you are right, we all need to eat and Emily needs to relax after that situation.”
I swallow, nod my head and take a huge bite of my salad. I look between the two of them before I stare down at the lettuce and stab it with my fork. What do these two think they are doing? We aren’t fate mates. I’m not supposed to be a fated mate. My father and mother weren’t therefore I’m not supposed to be. I am a whole human. I take a big sip of my diet coke and catch Cheyenne’s sad face. What is wrong? I hope she isn’t feeling neglected. I don’t want her to feel neglected. I sigh and go back to eating slowly as conversations spread around us.
After lunch, Demitri, Cheyenne, and I all head to our next class. It is our chemistry class that we happen to be doing a lab in today. I made sure that I packed my lab coat in my backpack before we head to the chemistry lecture hall. When I looked and realized I forgot it in my dorm I stopped. “s**t…”
Cheyenne turns around and looks at me confused. “What is it?”
I sigh and drop my backpack to my knees before I huff. “I left my lab coat in my dorm. Do you think I have time to run by and grab it?”
Cheyenne looks down at her watch and grimaces. “I’m not too sure. You will be pushing it even if you run.”
I groan and run a hand down my face. Demitri c***s his head to the side. “What if I run and grab it?”
I look at him a bit confused and shake my head. “You won’t be able to get into my room. Besides, I think Samantha is there right now. I don’t think she has class at this time.”
Demitri seems to ponder for a second and then smirks. “Well, what if I run you to your room and then run us back to the lecture hall?”
I look at him like he has lost his mind. “How do you…?”
“There is no time to think about it!” Cheyenne steps in and shakes my shoulders. “Let him run you to your room, grab your lab coat, and then you two get back to class. That is the fastest way and you two should make it back with plenty of time to spare.”
I sigh and shake my head. “Fine… Just save us some seats.”
She smirks and gives me a thumbs up. “You got it, now go!”
Demitri smirks and then turns around. “Hop on.” I jump up on his back and wrap my legs around his waist and my arms around his shoulders as he holds onto my legs. “Are you ready?”
I nod my head. “Yeah, I’m ready.”
He chuckles. “Alright, hold on tight!” He takes off running at full speed. I feel my hair try to come out of the messy bun I put it in this morning. Before I could even blink away the tears from the wind speed, we were at my dorm room door. “First stop.”
I hop off his back, push open the door and find Samantha laying down on her bed. I quickly grab my lab coat out of my dresser and then rush back out the door. “Hi, Samantha. Bye, Samantha.” I slam the door behind me and then shove my lab coat into my backpack. “Alright, time to get to class.”
Demitir grins. “Of course. Hop back on and I will get us there.”
I giggle and hop back onto his back and he takes off running again. This trip is a little longer, but we still make it back with plenty of time to spare.
He stops just outside the lecture hall and I hope off his back. “Thank you for doing that. I know if I had run to get this myself, I would be just arriving at my dorm room.”
He chuckles and wipes a stray hair out of my face. “It was no problem. It was kind of fun to do something like. I haven’t been able to act like a teenager in so long.”
I smile up at him and c**k my head to the side. “Why? You are still a teenager. You should be allowed to act like one.”
He sighs and shakes his head. “It is complicated… Oh, I need your number, you know, for the group project.”
I gasp. “You’re right! Crap! Here, let me write it down on a piece of paper for you.”
He chuckles as we walk into the lecture hall and find Cheyenne with two saved seats. “It is fine, just get it to me.”
I look up at him and smirk. “What’s so funny?’
He chuckles. “The fact that you said s**t earlier and then crap right now.”
I open my mouth and then close it really quick before I start to giggle uncontrollably. “You’re right. I need to do better about watching my language. I won’t be able to curse in front of small children. Well, I could but it would be highly frowned upon.”
Demitri chuckles and nods his head. “You’re right. It would be frowned upon. Come on, let's get seated before the lecture starts.”
We sat down next to each other. I sit in between him and Cheyenne as our teacher walks into the classroom. Once we get settled in, I rip out a sheet of paper and quickly write my number down on it. I hand it over to him and he smiles at me with a polite nod. I turn back to focus on the lecture and start taking notes. We are currently learning about atomic structures and how to identify an element by its electrons, neutrons, and protons. All of it seemed pretty basic, but this teacher wasn’t the best at truly teaching. He never truly slowed down enough for us to ask questions and take notes, so I did a lot of pre-class studying for these lectures. That was a good thing too, because poor Cheyenne didn’t know anything after each of these things.
After a forty-five minute lecture, our teacher turned off the powerpoint slides and cleared his throat. “Alright, everybody. Time to head to the chemistry lab on the second floor. I will meet you all there. You have five minutes to get there.”
It was a smooth transition. Everyone in the classroom stood up, walked out the doors, and headed to the chemistry lab together. Even though we were in a lecture hall, there were only about twenty of us in total. Actually, there were twenty-one of us. How I found out was because poor Demitri was the odd one out again and Cheyenne and I took him into our lab group. We ended up spending the remaining forty minutes of class just mixing different things together and watching them change colors. It wasn’t anything too crazy, but it worked out. While Cheyenne and Demitri did the mixing, I took some really good notes and even made sure to draw some good pictures. We agreed that after class, we would share the notes in the study hall session we had right after this class.
It was time for class to end, so we cleaned up our station, packed our bags, and we moved to the library. With it being our study hall period, we could go anywhere on campus we wanted so long as we checked in at the library first. We decided to stay in the library to work on the note sharing from the last two classes, work on our homework together, and then start making plans for the project in our history class.
Cheyenne smiles once she finished copying down my notes. “Thanks for taking such great notes! You are awesome at this.”
I smile and turn back to Demitri who was helping me with the trigonometry homework. “Thank you for helping me with this stuff. It gets a bit confusing for me sometimes with all the formulas.”
He smiles and nods his head. “Thank you both for allowing me to work with you. I never realized that I was the odd one out in our classes until today.”
Cheyenne smiles and nods her head. “I never realized just how truly nice you are. I guess it is because I never really get to socialize outside of the human race much.”
Demitri c***s his head to the side. “You don’t get to socialize with other vampires or even warlocks? They are the closest race to humans without them being human. Why haven’t you been allowed to socialize with them?”
