The time flies and we end up getting a lot of research done on the project. Demitri spent most of it texting his contact and figuring out all of the details of King Tut’s childhood while Cheyenne and I researched his reign as pharaoh and his burial. To be honest, we figured we were already half way done with the project, we just needed to figure out how we were going to organize the thing. When the class ends, we all head over to the dining hall to eat. The high school is set up pretty similar to a college campus so there are several people already in here eating when we arrived. I decided to grab a table in the middle of the room away from the windows. It hadn't truly turned to fall yet since it was the middle of August, but it was getting closer. I allowed Cheyenne and Demitri to get their food first while I saved the seats for the two of them at our little table. When Demitri got to the table he nodded to me. “There isn’t a whole lot of good human food from what I could tell. It looked like some weird hamburger stuff with corn and green beans for sides. I know if I were human, I wouldn’t want to eat it.” I smile and nod my head. “Thanks for letting me know. So, what did you get?” He looks at me confused and shakes his head with a smile. “Blood… That is what vampires drink is blood.” I giggle. “I know, but I also know that they do different things with the blood for you guys. I also know they serve different types of blood. So, what is on the menu for today?” He smirks and shakes his head. “Well, I got pig blood pudding, cow blood soup, and O negative blood to drink. How did you know that they served different types of blood? Typically only the vampires pay attention to that menu.” I feel my cheeks heat from the blush creeping up my neck. “Well, I am the one who insisted on them doing that. I feel like everyone, including vampires, should have options when they are eating and I feel like everyone should feel included when it comes to what the school has to offer.” He chuckles. “That’s right. I forget that your father was the one who started this whole thing so long ago. I know he doesn’t feel like he is the king over the human race, but he certainly could be. Why doesn’t he turn his rule into a monarch?” I clear my throat as I see Cheyenne walking towards us. “Well, I guess it is my turn to go get something to eat. I’ll be back!” I quickly jump out of my seat and move with purpose towards the salad bar. I always like to start off with something healthy and then devour something not so healthy. I grab a loaded salad and a piece of supreme pizza before I head over to the drink machine. I place my food on the counter next to the machine when I hear a loud crash and my food falls on the floor. “Uh oh!” Ugh… I hate that voice. “I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to knock your food on the floor…” Her thick Russian accent makes my skin crawl. “Here, why don’t I… Oh, never mind. I know better than to touch something a stupid human like you has even looked at.” I grimace as Anya Smirnoff stands before me. Her platinum blonde hair flows down her back in loose curls as always. She is prim, proper, but a totally nasty person. She is a vampire who thinks she is better than everyone else because she has a title at the end of her name. She made it her life mission to make sure that the only friends I had were all human and even that wasn’t enough for her, so she spread some horrible rumors around about me to make even the humans stay away. I sigh and look down at my food. I don’t even speak to her as I clean it up and take the plates over to the drop off window for the dirty dishes. I thought I was going to be left alone, until I stood up. “Hey, you should be grateful! Duchess Anya was speaking to you!” Samantha sneers at me. Samantha is a beta female wolf and is also my roommate while I am here on campus. She does her very best to make my life a living hell while I am here because she and Anya are thick as thieves when it comes to tormenting me. I sigh and shake my head. “Hi Samantha. Hi Anya. Hi all the rest of you too. Now, I would like to be left alone so I can get my food and go back to my seat. Unlike the rest of you, humans can’t survive as well as the other races.” I try to sidestep the group of mean girls when Angelina, an archangel from Brazil, places a hand on my shoulder. “You know, human, you should be a little nicer to us. Remember we are better, faster, and stronger than all humans in this whole world. Plus, we are all future world leaders.” She smirks at me with some weird authority she feels she possesses. I scoff and roll my eyes. “Angelina, you are just a step above a regular angel. If anything you are as close to being a world leader as I am to being an alpha wolf. It is never going to happen. Now, leave me alone so I can get my food and eat in peace.” “Peace? Ha! She says she wants peace!” Hecate, a baroness from the demon race, sneers. “You will never have peace as long as you are here.” Her gold eyes flash black as her inner demon tries to rise. Baily, a werebear who happens to be the daughter of the gamma, and Agnes, the daughter of a commander in the warlock race, step in front of me as I try to get away. I am now surrounded on all sides by six girls who seem to want to make my life a living hell. “Not so fast, little human.” Anges’s English accent makes me cringe. “You aren’t going anywhere.” She spins me back around to face Anya who is smiling maliciously. I swallow hard as she starts to raise a single finger. “Remember all those years ago when you were just a child? I should have never befriended you in the first place.” She raises her hand and I brace for the impact of her slap. I continue to wait, but nothing happens. I hear a loud hiss ripple across the dining hall and feel a rush of wind zoom past my face. “Anya… What do you think you are doing?” I open my eyes and look up. Standing in front of me with his hand around Anya’s wrist is Demitri. He is baring his fangs at her and his blood red eyes have turned black with rage. “Prince… Prince… Prince Demitri!” She stammers in shock at his presence here. “I did not realize that you were here or I would have allowed you to handle this rude human for me.” She licks her lips and pulls closer to him. “Now, my dear, I’ll allow you to finish her off for me.” Demitri hisses and pushes her away from him. She stumbles back and hits the drink fountain with a loud bang. “I witnessed the whole thing, Anya. We are supposed to either get along with the humans or leave them alone. She was doing nothing but trying to get a drink when you knocked her food into the floor. Do you have no shame?” I watch as he folds his arms across his strong chest and I see Anya’s eyes grow large with both fear and anger. She turns to me. “What have you done to our prince! You evil human! I’ll kill you!” She tries to lunge at me when Demitri pulls me behind him and grabs her by the throat. “You will not lay a hand on her ever again. If I found out that you have, I will personally see to things being handled. Also, her name is Emily. It would be best if you learned it.” A growl tears across the dining hall as Zach Jones, the future Alpha of the wolf race, walks over to our little crowd. “Samantha… Should I even ask why you are involved with this bullying scheme?” He crosses his arms firmly over his broad chest and stares down at her. She whimpers and shakes her head. “You said to never let my friends be bullied…” He growls to silence her. “I told you to never sit by while someone was being bullied! I never said to join in with the instigator!” He runs a hand down his face and turns towards me with pain in his eyes. “Hey Emily.” I smile and give him a polite nod of my head. “Hey Zach. Everything is fine.” He growls as Demitri hisses in response to my obvious lie. “Don’t lie to us, Emily. We are stupid.” They both turn back to all six girls and stare them down. “You should all learn to leave her alone. If you don’t, we will involve the other four in this situation as well.” All of the girls seem to pale instantly. Zach places a firm but gentle hand on my lower back and starts leading me back to the food. “Come on, I’ll help you get your food. I need a plate too.” He looks back at Demitri and nods. “We will be right over.” I look up at him as he turns back and smiles down at me. “What…?” “Just, come on. You need food and so do I. I’m starving!” He pushes me back towards the food and I repeat what I just did and grab a loaded salad and a slice of pizza. I head back over to the drink station and grab a diet coke and then head over to the table where Cheyenne and Demitri are already sitting and waiting for Zach and me to arrive.
