Once we got finished eating, we put our plates in the dish drop off window and headed to the other side of campus to go to our English Literature class. It was a short, but pleasant walk since the campus was only about a quarter of a mile long. When we made it to the classroom, we decided to find a set of seats near each other and we decided to hang out before class started.
Zach smiled at us once we all got seated. “So, I know a lot about Emily, but I don’t know much about you, Cheyenne. Do you mind telling me about yourself?”
Cheyenne blushes and shakes her head. “There isn’t much to tell really.”
I step in really quick. “Oh, don’t be modest! You have a lot of stuff to tell him about. You are smart, you are beautiful, you are talented, and you are a basketball star!”
“Oh really? That’s really cool! I didn’t know you played basketball!” Zach turns back to her and smiles.
Cheyenne blushes deeper and nods her head. “Yeah, I play for the school team. I’m a starter actually.”
I look at her and roll my eyes. “You have been a starter for the last four years. Tell him what you did last year.”
Cheyenne sighs and rolls her eyes. “I won the game winning shot at the State finals last year. We ended up beating the other team by one point right at the buzzer.”
“Oh really? That’s really cool! Can you tell me that story?” Zach seemed really interested to hear about it.
Cheyenne was a bit shocked. “Uhm… Sure! So, we were down by two points. The other team had control of the ball and they were trying to get another three points in before the end of the game. Well, their shooter missed and I got the ball. I started running down the court to the other team’s goal.”
“Oh wow! That seems like it was really intense!” Zach’s eyes were wide and he had a huge grin on his face.
Cheyenne nodded her head and smiled. “It was.”
“Please, continue,” he said.
I was super surprised by this interaction between the two of them. It seemed like they were truly turning out to be friends. Everything seemed to be going well until Samantha showed up. “Hey, baby.” She throws her arms around Zach’s neck and starts to purr. “I’ve missed you all day, where have you been?”
I know my face is showing pure disgust at her actions. Cheyenne was about as impressed as I was when she just barged in on our conversation. Zach seemed just as pissed off at the moment too. He tried to shrug her off of his shoulders and turned around to look at her. “Samantha, please leave me alone. I am trying to have a conversation with my mates. You just interrupted a pretty good story of how Cheyenne made the game winning point last basketball season for the girl’s team.”
I was shocked by what he said. He was actually listening to Cheyenne’s story and it was clear as day that he was actually interested. I saw the shock on Cheyenne’s face too. She has never had a guy actually listen to her and value her opinion like that. Samantha was just as shocked as we were, but she soon showed just how pissed off she was about it. “Baby… I am far more important than that stupid human. Why aren’t you paying attention to me? Why are you even hanging out with them?”
Zach growls and Cheyenne and I feel him push out his aura. It is almost like walking into a brick wall from what everyone has said. I only feel like a weird ripple. I can feel it, but it doesn’t seem to affect me like it affects everyone else. Zach stands and knocks Samantha away from him with his movements. “First off, you have no right to be calling me baby. We aren’t mates, we aren’t dating anymore, and I have told you to never come near me, Emily, or Cheyenne again. Second, these two young ladies are not stupid! They are far more intelligent than you could ever be and it wouldn’t surprise me if you had been cheating off of Emily this entire time just to get through all of the classes. Third, if you ever come near me or them again, I will have no choice but to enforce my status on you. Do I make myself clear?”
I watch as she starts to shake from his angry eyes and fierce voice. I caught the site of his wolf trying to come out and it was a bit scary. Samantha started to whimper. “Baby…”
“DON’T CALL ME BABY!” He growls and grabs her arms. “I have told you to leave me alone! I am not one to hit a female, but dammit you are making this s**t entirely too difficult!” I watch as his claws start trying to extend.
This makes me fearful for her safety and everyone else’s safety. An angry wolf, especially an alpha wolf, is too dangerous for everybody in sight. I have to step in and fast. I quickly stand up and place a gentle hand on Zach’s arm. He turns around and I see his wolf has full control over his mind and body. “Zach… What is your wolf’s name?”
Zach growls. His voice seems to have changed in the matter of seconds. “My name is Leo, love. You can call me whatever you like, though.”
I sigh and nod my head. “Okay, Leo. I understand that you are not happy with what Samantha has done or is currently doing right now, but I need you to be calm and think clearly for just a few seconds. You losing control right now is not the best or the safest idea. There are several humans in here, not including myself or Cheyenne. We cannot heal like wolves can. I also want you to realize that it would be a huge ordeal if you were to start a fight with her here. You are the next alpha king of the werewolf race. You have so much left to do and a pretty long reign that has yet to begin.” I sigh and step a little closer to him. I rub my hand up and down his forearm, trying to soothe the beast inside of him. “Leo, please. I need you to breathe and be calm. I don’t want anybody to get hurt.”
Leo growls and I see Zach starting to try and take back control. “My human has told this she-wolf to leave him alone. She is nothing more than a pup who has no business being anywhere near me or my mate.”
I sigh and shake my head. “Leo, we are friends, but that doesn’t mean you can beat her up. She isn’t worth the hassle or the drama that is going to come from you doing that.”
I watch as Zach’s eye color starts to flicker back and forth between his normal eye color and the eye color of his wolf. He closes his eyes firmly and starts to growl. He lets go of Samantha who falls to the ground. He puts his hands to his head and starts to shake it rapidly. I gasp when he pulls me tightly into his chest and starts to breathe deeply. “Thank you, Emily.”
Zach’s voice was back. I sigh as I hug him back. “You’re welcome. I couldn’t let a long time friend like you get in trouble over someone like her.”
We pull away from each other and I smile up at him. Out of nowhere someone grabs Zach’s shoulder and turns him around. “Hey man, are you okay?”
Zach smiles and nods his head. “Yeah, I’m alright, mate.” He turns back towards me and Cheyenne and smiles. “Girls, this is my mate Trevor. Trevor, this is Emily and this lovely young lady is Cheyenne.”
I watch as Trevor kind of bypasses me and heads straight towards Cheyenne. “Hello… It’s nice to meet you.”
I watch in awe as I realize what is going on. I turn to Zach and whisper to him. “Do you think those two are mates?”
Zach chuckles low in my ear and I feel him nod his head. I didn’t want to take my eyes off of this situation. “I think so. He has been talking about her nonstop for about a week now. Typically about two weeks before someone’s eighteenth birthday, their scent changes a bit. It starts to become more distinct. It won’t become recognizable to our animals until they turn eighteen, but it is typically a good sign that they might be the one.”
I nod my head and smile. “Is he the one you wanted to bring to her birthday party?”
Zach nods his head firmly. “He is.” He clears his throat and looks between the two of them. “Why don’t we all take a seat? I think class is about to start.” They nod their heads and move into seats next to each other. I move next to Cheyenne and Zach sits next to me. Once we were all settled in, it didn’t take long for class to start and our school day to begin.
