Chapter 7: Emily

1600 Words
I wake up to Cheyenne shaking me to get up. When I sit up and stretch, I notice that she is smiling down at me with pure joy on her face. “Day one of us being roommates here at school!” I smile and nod my head. “Day one, and I can already tell that I am going to be getting to class on time from here on out!” We both giggle and then start getting ready for our Tuesday block schedules. Since we did math, science, and history yesterday, today is supposed to be English, foreign language, and music. On both block days we get study hall to help us keep up with the speed of the classes. Once we were both dressed and ready for the day, we did a quick checklist to make sure we both had all that we needed packed in our backpacks. “Alright,” I started. “We have our English literature books?” “Check!” She nods her head firmly. “Okay, do we have our Spanish books?” I look up and see Cheyenne’s smiling face. “Check.” She sighs and shakes her head. I look down again and nod my head. “Alright, do we have our music books?” Cheyenne giggles and nods her head. “Check! We have everything we need. Now we can head to grab breakfast before we head off to our English class.” I giggle and nod my head. “You’re right. We both need to have a really good breakfast for the day. Also…” I run over to my bedside table and open the top drawer. I pulled out a small box that I wrapped in birthday wrapping paper myself. I take it over to Cheyenne and place it gently in her hands. “Happy birthday present number two!” She giggles and starts unwrapping it. I took extra care to make her feel special for this birthday since it is her eighteenth. She opens the top of the box and gasps. “Emily! Why did you get me this?” I smirk and shake my head. “Because I wanted to. Do you like it?” She pulls out the tiny broach that I knew she would love. It isn’t anything too fancy. It is just a simple silver pendant with the August birthstone surrounded by rhinestones. “I don’t like it…” I feel my heartbeat speed up. “I absolutely love it! When did you get this?” I smile and shake my head. “I won’t tell you when I got it or how I got it. All you need to know is that it is your birthday gift for the week.” She smiles and places the tiny broach on the collar of her shirt. “What do you think?” I smile and nod my head. “It looks amazing! I am so glad you love it!” She smiles and walks over to me. She throws her arms around my neck and hugs me tight. “I love you! You are the best friend a girl could ever ask for.” I hug her back just as tight. “I love you too. Now, let’s get going! I want an omelet this morning. I am starving!” We rush out of our dorm room and make sure to lock it into place. We may live on the fourth floor, but we still like to keep our door locked. We rush down the stairs and run outside as the unseasonably warm day soaks into our skin. Cheyenne sighs and basks in the sun’s light. “Today feels amazing! I wish we could have class outside.” I smile and nod my head. “Me too, but I know we can’t.” I look towards the dining hall and see the doors starting to open. I look at my phone and realize we have plenty of time to eat and then get to class. “Come on! Let’s go get in line so we can get some good food!” We rush into the dining hall and find that hardly anyone is up at this time. We both set our backpacks down at a table near the windows and then jump in the short lines to get our food. I go to get my omelet first. I ask them to put everything they can in it. I end up with cheese, bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, and bacon. Once they got that made, I hopped over to the other side and grabbed a few sausage links and a hashbrown. After I got my plate fully loaded, I grabbed an extra large coffee from their coffee machine and went back to my seat. When I got there, Cheyenne was already sitting down and waiting for me. I set my plate and cup down and then look at her. “What did you get?” She smiles and shows me her plate. “I got scrambled eggs with cheese, bacon, sausage, and an everything bagel. What did you get?” I smile and shower her mine. “Sausage, a hashbrown, and an everything omelet.” We both start to giggle as we dig into our breakfast. After we ate for a few minutes, we decided to discuss other topics until we heard someone clear their voice behind us. I turn around and look into the baby blue eyes of Zach Jones. “Is this seat taken?” He points to the chair that had my backpack in it. I look at Cheyenne who shrugs and nods her head. I turn back to him and smile. “Not at all. Would you like to sit down?” Zach smiles and nods his head. “I would, if you two ladies don’t mind me sitting down with you.” We both smile and shake our heads as I move my backpack and he takes the seat. “So, what are you two ladies up to this morning?” I smile and look at Cheyenne. “We are getting ready for our English Literature class. We have it in first period.” He smiles and nods his head. “Me too! Do you all want to sit together today? I would like that if at all possible.” I look at Cheyenne and she smiles and nods her head. “I think that would be fun. We could add someone else to our study group this year.” I smile and nod my head. “I think you are right. We could use the extra brain power this year with how things are going.” Zach smiles and takes a bite out of his omelet. I smirk and look over at his plate. “Before we get into that, we need to have a quick talk.” Zach raises an eyebrow and swallows the bite of food in his mouth. “Okay, what do we need to talk about?” I smirk and send a wink to Cheyenne who giggles. “You need to tell us what you got to eat. That is tradition with us and we don’t like to break tradition.” Zach bites down hard on his lip before he starts to laugh uncontrollably. When he finally comes back down from his high, he sighs and wipes a tear from his eye. “Alright, I got an omelet with everything, sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs with cheese, two hashbrowns, a bowl of grits, and an everything bagel.” I looked down at his plate and I just realized how full it truly was. “Are you really going to eat all of that?” Zach smirks and nods his head. “Yes I am. I am a werewolf. Our metabolisms are exceptionally high. We have to eat like this or we won’t be able to function throughout the day. I also have meat snacks in my backpack to go with me so I can keep up with my body’s needs.” I c**k my head to the side and nod. “Hmm. I didn’t realize your metabolisms were so much higher than ours. I just figured that you all ate that much because you had to feed your wolf too.” Zach arches an eyebrow and nods his head. “That is pretty much why they are high. In order for our wolves to function like they are supposed to as well, we have to eat what they want to eat too. We also have to eat so much more of it. That is part of the reason you typically don’t see a truly fat werewolf. Our wolves eat away at the calories too.” I nod my head and turn towards Cheyenne who sighed. “I wish I could be a werewolf.” Zach smirks and nods his head. “Well, maybe you will end up fated to one after your birthday. Speaking of which, do you mind if me and some of my friends come along to the party? I know it seems a bit sudden, but I would like it if at all possible.” I look at Cheyenne who seems to be smiling. She nods her head and I turn back to Zach. “I think that is a wonderful idea! The more the merrier!” Zach chuckles and nods his head. “Alright it sounds like a plan!” Once that was handled, we all turned back towards our food to finish eating before we had to be in class.
