CHAPTER EIGHTEEN Remi felt the hot desert air blast her face as she sat by the open window in the truck. They sped along a wide highway where trucks and cars moved at crazy speeds, weaving in and out of lanes. It seemed more like a race than a drive. This was the main road between Djibouti and northern Ethiopia. Being a landlocked country, Mekonnen had explained, Djibouti was Ethiopia’s main access to the sea. Somaliland was too underdeveloped, and Eritrea was cut off thanks to the civil war. So traffic had grown on this highway in recent months. Traffic had grown, but its destination had shifted.
