Chapter Ten

“W-what…you can't just do that." She laughed nervously. There was no way her brother would do that; she wouldn't let him either. It was too dangerous. She knew how Damien was capable of ruining someone's life. “Why not, sister? I was just wondering what kind of person ruined your life four years ago. If you were worried about Yssa, you know what I'm capable of,” Evan muttered confidently. On the other hand, she was getting hot. "I know. You already knew about him; you wouldn't want to just sit around and watch me get pregnant with some stranger without knowing who he is." Eve's mind hit a realization. At that moment, her brother's smirk widened. He knew something, and she was thankful he hadn't done anything in those four years. However, she didn't seem to be able to stop him now. "Don't worry about anything, Eve. I wouldn't let anything happen to you or my niece. Just focus on how you can handle your situation now. Keep in mind that we can't keep hiding her from our family." He became serious, which gave Eve goosebumps. Her brother was right, not forever. She could not hide her daughter's identity from her family, from everyone, especially from Damien, forever. But she must first prioritize her career and end it so that she can move on to the next step. Unfortunately, seeing Damien will be the first step. “I need to talk to someone and sort something out about my career, Brother. Please keep an eye on Yssa for me,” she smiled when she saw his reaction. He was already expecting her. “As always. Buy my favorite snacks before you come back. I have a feeling I'll be watching over her until the evening. Take care.” Evan winked at her before she went to her room to change. She didn't know how it would end but she had to act and try. She has nothing but hope. It was another busy day for Damien when his secretary made a hesitant appearance in his office. The 40-year-old man stood firm and tried to open his mouth. "What is it, Ronald?" He asked when he got nothing. The man held the back of his head and smiled nervously. “I don't know if I should tell you about this, sir, but I just had a call from Ms. Eve Darlington. She asked me to see you here in your office-” "Send her in," he answered quickly when he heard her name. Excitement coursed through his body as he watched his secretary's back move away. “I wouldn't let you win so easily, woman." “I am rescinding your offer, Mr. Heather." All his excitement disappeared after he heard Eve in front of his desk. The woman was in disguise, but her posture was still good. "What?" Damien muttered to himself. He looked at her with a serious expression. She was completely different from what he had seen last time. “My deepest apologies, but I don't want to be the face of your brand. Like you said earlier, I'm not fit to be-” “You're making a big deal out of it, woman. We've dealt with that incident before, haven't we? As for what happened last night, after we left Grandma's—” “My decision has nothing to do with our matter yesterday, Mr. Heather. I also think it ended after our playthrough was successful. I don't want to cross paths with you again," Eve needed to win him over. And she had to keep a straight face in front of him. " Is it so? Aren't you worried about how this will affect your career, Miss Darlington? If you can't make up your mind perfectly, I'll give you time to think.” His temper cooled. Damien hated himself for feeling disappointed by Eve's decision. He wouldn't accept it. He'd never been rejected before. "Why are you making it so difficult, Mr. Heather? Not that I haven't made up my mind yet, I just don't want to work in your field. I hope you understand and cannot force me to accept this offer. My choice is my choice, not yours.” "Very well. I'll look into it and see if my staff made a mistake in choosing you, and I didn't force you, Eve Darlington. You seem desperate to reject the proposal. You may part ways." He spoke calmly and watched her expression, but was once again disappointed. Eve's face was relieved when she heard him. “Thank you for your understanding, Mr. Heather-” “But I must say that I will not let you go so easily. You have wasted my time choosing another model. How would you make it up to me, Ms. Eve?” he sneered. Watching her priceless expression was something he couldn't get over. “I know a jerk will always be a jerk. So name your condition.” Eve gritted her teeth. She should have thought about it first. Damien wouldn't let her go that easily, he was someone who would take every opportunity to make his gains. “You gave your word to Grandma last night. Now she wants me to bring you to her place this weekend for the recipe. She wanted to teach you," she regretted it now. Eve wanted to beat herself up for saying her words without thinking about the consequences. Now she had to go with the man she was supposed to avoid. "Fine, but it will be the last time. Mark my words.” “Good answer, my love. Now you should take your time and relax. I still have a lot of things to do. Well, I could reschedule them if you want to stay longer-” “No need, Mr. Heather. I will be happy to leave this place as soon as possible.” She stared at his victorious expression and, without looking back, she stormed out of his place. She was angry but relieved at the same time. “Your hatred of me may soon turn to admiration, Miss Darlington. Be careful what you feel,” Damien muttered as he watched her back sway before she stepped into the elevator.
