13 Challenged

Rena put her phone away and went to draw herself a bath.    Meanwhile, Adam had a good chuckle at the thought of Rena labeling his brother as a “playboy.” He had to admit that the girl had nerves.   Leo was curious about what Adam was doing and peered over his shoulder to read the conversation. Surprisingly, he smiled a little.   “Based on your reaction, you don’t appear to be upset about what she said,” Adam observed. “What is so special about-”   Before he could finish his sentence, Leo tossed his phone at his brother. “Log into your f*******: on my phone,” he instructed.   “It looks like Rena won’t be able to escape from you, big brother. But, are you sure you don’t need me to give you any advice? In this kind of situation, I have a Master’s degree, and you are only an undergrad,” Adam said as he logged in to his account.   Once he saw that the login was successful, Leo snatched his phone back. “No need,” he said curtly.   The next day was Monday, and Leo was in his office on the top floor of the Caswell Industries building. He stood before his floor-to-ceiling window and took in the panoramic view of Washington as if he was a king surveying his domain. Leo would have stayed there for a little longer if it wasn’t for hearing the new email notification from his computer. Leo left the window and sat down at his desk and pulled up the email from Adam on his screen. It was a detailed report of Rena Marsh. Leo read the rest of the report, and his initial feelings morphed into something else that he couldn’t identify. Rena Marsh, finally, I found you. Leo thought to himself. While at the same time, Rena recognized that the new intern in her office was the woman she met at the Cafe. “Tara, the new intern is here. Please show her around.”  Rena’s thoughts were interrupted by Ian’s voice, and when she looked up, she found the editor in chief with a woman at his side. She had to do a double-take when she recognized the straight brown hair and full lips of none other than Lucy’s cousin, Gina. What a small world, she thought as she tried not to attract her attention. “This is Gina Fuller,” Ian introduced. “She is the new intern. And Gina, this is Tara Armstrong, and she is our senior reporter.” “Nice to meet you, Tara,” Gina said politely, with a modest smile.  If she hadn’t seen Gina’s behavior at the cafe yesterday, Rena knew she would have been convinced by this “nice girl act” that was on display before her.  Tara nodded stiffly in acknowledgment as Ian’s phone rang.   “I’m sorry I have to take this. Tara, I trust that you will be able to handle things from here,” he said as he walked away.   “This is Rena, by the way. She is my other intern,” Tara said as she gestured to Rena.   Rena had no choice but to stand up and plaster a smile on her face. When she finally met Gina’s eyes, she saw them widen with recognition, before they narrowed slightly with thinly-veiled hatred.   “Hello,” Gina said calmly as she offered her hand.   When their hands came together, their difference in skin tone contrasted against one another greatly. Rena’s porcelain complexion against Gina’s tan made her look more delicate in comparison.   Suddenly, Gina tightened her grip and squeezed Rena’s hand hard.    So that is how we are going to play this, huh? Rena thought. You aren’t the only one with a hand. After she squeezed back even harder, she suppressed a smile when Gina briefly yelled out in pain.   They were as incompatible as fire and water the first time they met, while Rena was not someone who was easy to be bullied. Although she was not overly strong, Rena knew martial arts and had concentred all of her strength into her hand, and the results were what she expected.   Tara didn’t know what to make of the scene that had played out before her. She thought that the two knew each other somehow, and didn’t like each other very much. If there was bad blood between her two assistants, it would make her job more complicated than it should be. Regardless, she shook her head and moved on, and assigned a desk for Gina that was next to her.    After she told Gina to familiarize herself with the magazine’s website, Tara headed to the bathroom as well. When she opened the door, she heard two women in the middle of gossiping.
