14  The Second Time They Met

713 Words
“I heard that the new intern has a strong background,” the first woman commented. “She is the daughter of the Fuller family, who owns Fuller Enterprises.”   “If that is the case, I’m sure that the coveted position the interns clamor for will go to Gina this year. Rena is out of the question,” the other responded.   “Why do you believe that? Gina’s educational background isn’t impressive, and all she has is a high school diploma.”   “That’s not important. Not only is she the daughter of the Fuller family, but she is Ethan’s niece, who is our managing editor. It wouldn’t make a difference even if Rena were a Harvard grad, she can’t compete with a person’s upbringing and stature.”   “Maybe. But, let us see if Tara has the guts to ridicule Ethan’s niece. That would be interesting to see, wouldn’t it?”   After she heard enough, Tara walked purposefully into the washroom, and the two women went quiet. They finished washing their hands before they quickly left.   Just as she was about to enter a stall, Tara saw Rena leave one. From the look on the girl’s face, she had heard everything the woman said.    Tara was interested in finding out the cause of the rift between Rena and Gina and took her chance to invite her to dinner. “Rena, after work, would you-” she started.   “I’m sorry, but I need to get back,” Rena interrupted. She knew that the odds were stacked against her when it came to her background, which meant that her time at Weekender Magazine was limited. But, she rationalized that as long as she did her best, and rose above expectations with her work ethic, then she might have a chance.   That afternoon, Tara was given the task of conducting two interviews. She gave one to Rena to complete by herself and took Gina with her to the other one.    Rena’s interview was set to take place in a conference room at a luxury hotel. The interview went off without a hitch, but as Rena was trying to find the exit to the massive hotel, she found herself a little lost.   The floor that she was on had multiple conference rooms that were attached to numerous hallways. A few of the rooms had signed on the doors that displayed company names that Rena recognized, but she didn’t have the guts to just walk into one of them to ask for directions.   At the end of one of the halls, she saw a man in sunglasses that stood outside a conference room. Rena realized that the man was Ethan Andrews, who was the managing editor at Weekender Magazine. His slicked-back hair and pudgy frame were unmistakable.    Then, a thin man exited the conference room and went right up to Ethan.   Rena hid in behind the closest corner she could find, for what was happening before she was too much to comprehend.   The unknown man wrapped his arms around Ethan’s neck and rubbed his face on his chest. He then reached up to nibble on Ethan’s ears before he kissed him right on the lips.   Rena couldn’t believe that such a scene was unfolding before her eyes as she peeked around a corner. It wasn’t often that she encountered a same-s*x couple expressing their love like this. With her heart pounding, she instinctually took out her phone to secretly photograph it.   Ethan and the other man hugged before they walked down the hallway towards Rena. However, the unknown man sensed that they were being watched and caught a glimpse of Rena.   “Who the hell are you?” the man shouted.   Rena panicked and ran away in the other direction. She was far away from the elevator and didn’t know where the stairs were. She bolted down the hallway to her right as the footsteps behind her got closer and closer, and saw that there was a single room at the very end that was slightly ajar.
