The truth was, Evan hadn't found himself a job for the past three years, not because of his injury, but because he didn't want a job.
As the saying goes, beer before liquor, one would never be sicker, but liquor before beer and one was in the clear.
He was the young master of the Johnsons before he got kicked out. A life of luxury was the only life he knew of.
And now, you want him to bend down his head, swallow his pride and be charming? That was never an option for him.
And it was not like he'd be condemned to this poverty forever. Because he knew that one day, the Johnsons'd lift the ban on his assets.
And now that they had, he got to be the spendthrift your master again.
He told Rachel he was looking for a job, only because he wanted to get Rachel's mother off his back. He had gotten enough insults from that one.
"I'm fine, as long as it's nothing heavy. Don't worry."
"Okay. Any idea what job you're looking for?"
"I haven't really thought about it. Don't worry. I'll get a job in two days. And enough with the heavy subject. I still have some of that lottery money left. Let's have dinner and watch a movie!"
Evan put his arm around Rachel's waist, and the two left, talking and laughing.
It wasn't any fancy place they went to; just a diner on the street. They had some noodles before heading to the cinema.
They saw a huge poster in the hall when they arrived.
Rachel exclaimed excitedly: "Evan, look, it's the new film by Nancy Hill! She's like a super star. Everybody loves her, especially Josie. She set a picture of Nancy's as her phone screen."
Nancy was both gorgeous and curvy.
But for Evan, there was no place like home; and there was no woman like your wife.
"Sweetheart, do you like her too?" Evan asked her thoughtfully.
Rachel nodded: "Yeah, she's like a goddess. Who wouldn't love her? Here, the poster says she'll be here in York in a couple days to promote her new film."
"Josie's gonna be so excited when she knows about this. She's always wanted to get Nancy's signature. But there're so many fans at her every promotion, that it's hard to catch a glimpse of Nancy, let alone getting her signature."
Then a broadcast sounded.
"Attention please. Movie Hello, Mr. Billionaire is about to start in ten minutes. Guests for this movie please check in at the counter."
Rachel got up and grabbed Evan's hand: "Time to go in!"
Hello, Mr. Billionaire was a comedy film. There were many jokes. Rachel almost never stopped laughing for the entire film.
She was still talking about it on their taxi home.
Seeing Rachel so happy was a beautiful sight for Evan.
Soon they arrived and got off the car.
A red Porsche immediately caught their attention.
Because this wasn't a rich neighborhood. No one could afford a Porsche here, not to mention a Prische sports car.
Under the dim street light, a couple could be seen making out in the car.
"Rachel, is that girl Josie?"
Rachel watched closely, and soon her expression turned into one of anger.
As if on cue, she saw Ray's hand slipping under Josie's shirt.
That was ENOUGH.
Rachel marched over and smacked the window, startling the couple inside.
Josie turned towards the sound and found herself face to face with her sister. She hurriedly pulled away from Ray before fixing her hair and clothes.
Ray didn't panic in the least at being caught. In fact, he was a bit angry for not getting what he wanted.
"Rachel? I'm here to drop Josie off."
Rachel ignored Ray. She snapped to Josie: "Josie, get off, now!"
Josie got out of the car, her cheeks still pink from the makeout session, and her eyes darting around at being caught.
"Come home with me!" With that, Rachel grabbed Josie's hand.
"Rachel, what are you doing? I haven't said goodbye to Ray... Ray, I'll see you tomorrow!"
Ray smiled: "Okay, see you tomorrow!"
Evan and Ray exchanged a glance before Evan observed sharply: "Seems like you and Josie hang out later than you should. Don't let it happen again."
Rachel noticed Evan didn't follow up. She called out to him: "Evan, what are you doing there? Let's go home!"
Ray brushed away the lipstick at the corner of his mouth and snorted: "And who are you to tell me what to do and what not? I wouldn't even spare you one look if it weren't for Josie. Aren't you shamed, living off a woman?”
With that, Ray gave him the middle finger and drove off.
Josie wriggled herself free from Rachel's hand and scoffed at Evan: "Evan, what did you tell Ray?"
Evan shrugged: "Nothing. I just told him he should bring you home earlier on your next date."
Josie crossed her arms over her chest: "That's none of your concern. Why can't you mind your own business?"
Rachel frowned at this rudeness: "Josie, lose that attitude! And tell me, what were you doing there in his car? What did I tell you?! No one'll treat you like a lady if you don't act like one!"
Josie snorted: "I don't need you to tell me what to do. Besides, it was just a few kisses and touches, everybody does that."
Rachel glared: "Yeah everybody does that, but not in front of the whole neighborhood! At least you could find a more private place, or do you want everyone to point their fingers at you, and call you a slut?!"
"Oh come on. It's the middle of the night. No one saw. I'm done talking to you."
With that, Josie ran upstairs.
Evan tried to soothe Rachel: "Come on sweetheart, you should let her go. She is a grown-up. She knows what she's doing."
Rachel shook her head, feeling defeated: "You don't understand. Josie is spoiled. She just graduated from college and doesn't know the way of the world. I just don't want her to get hurt."
Rachel did have a point.
Ray acted like such a gentleman when he was with Mr and Mrs Scott today.
But tonight, he was like an arrogant and pretentious asshole.
A hypocrite in the true sense of the word.
But Evan wasn't going to say anything in front of his in-laws. They all thought so highly of Ray, that if he should say anything, they'd think he was up to no good.
"Aren't they getting engaged? You should stay out of this, Rachel. Or else your sister is gonna hate you."
Rachel said with concern: "I'm just worried that he might force Josie into a physical relationship."
