Richard's fancy watch was a knockoff?
Evan's words pissed off both Richard and Mia.
Mia was a vain girl, but her vainity was tramped upon twice on this day.
The first time, she accused Evan of buying a knockoff for Rachel, but it turned out it was a real Petak; she accused Evan of stealing it, and again she was wrong.
The second time, she bragged about having dinner at LS Hotel, to show off her boyfriend's wealth and to put down Eva, but SURPRISE! The hotel was owned by Josie's boyfriend.
She felt like she couldn't have a break today.
And now, this would all come to an end, if Evan had just kept quiet.
Obviously Evan wouldn't have that.
This was a perfect chance for Mia to get her dignity back.
Evan was just a pauper, who depended on his wife for pocket money. How dare he accuse Richard's watch of being a knockoff?
This was as ridiculous as a servant doubting the authenticity of his master's jewlery.
Mia sneered: "Richard's watch is a limited edition. It's very hard to come by in here, and it's worth ten times of yours. It's not your fault that you don't know it. But even if you can't afford it, it doesn't mean you should walk around and declare everyone else's fake."
"Open your eyes and take a closer look. Is that BMW fake? Richard is wearing brands you haven't even heard of. It's not like you poor wretch has an eye for luxuries or something."
Richard held his head up high, and announced: "Mia, don't waist your time with him. What would he know? He's just a loser. That watch is probably the only nice thing he could afford in his life."
Evan was about to speak again, but he was stopped by Rachel.
"Mia, Richard, I'm sorry. Evan must be mistaken. Please don't take it to heart."
Mia gave a wave of her hand: "No worries. I'll let it pass this time, but only 'cause of you, Rachel."
Richard snorted before taking Mia's hand and walking towards his car.
"Mia, you should stay away from these people. They just can't handle other people's success."
As if to show off, the two of them got in the car and sped off with a loud noise.
Rachel let out a breath before turning to Evan: "Evan, Mia shouldn't have said what she said back there. Please don't get mad."
"Don't worry. I won't." Evan smiled. It was not worth it anyway, to hold grudges against two idiots.
He wasn't joking or lying when he said Richard's watch was a knockoff.
When it came to jewleries, who had better judgment than him, who had seen, owned, used everything nice back when he was in the Johnson family.
He knew a knockoff when he saw it.
Rachel frowned: "But you shouldn't have said that. I know Mia shouldn't have doubted you in the first place, but you shouldn't try to get back at her by accusing her boyfriend's watch of being a knockoff. Mia and I are girlfriends s***h colleagues; if you piss her off, things are gonna be weird between us."
Evan quickly soothed her with a smile: "Okay, it's my fault, sweetheart. Don't be angry."
Rachel rolled her eyes. Of course she wouldn't get mad at him over such a trival. "And be honest with me. Where did you get the money for this watch?"
Evan already had an excuse in mind when he bought it: "I won the lottery. There's a lottery shop on the way to the grocery store. I've been buying it every day for three years. And I won! Just a few days ago!"
"A few days ago? Why didn't you tell me?"
"Er... I didn't get the money until today. So I immediately went to buy this watch for you. Do you like it? Try it on." Evan said charmingly.
Rachel's eyes immediately lit up upon taking the watch in her hand. "How much did you win? Is there any money left?"
"Well, I won 130 thousand bucks. There isn't much left."
The watch cost him about 128 thousand bucks. Evan lied that he won 130 thousand in case Rachel decided to check his balance. After all, he had no bank card, not in this country. His money was in a Swiss bank account, and so was his centurion card.
Sure enough, Rachel pouted at his words: "Huh? You spent all that money on this watch?"
Rachel smiled: "It doesn't matter how much it costs. It'd be worth it, as long as you like it."
Rachel said hesitantly: "Evan, can we return this watch? Together with the 100 thousand I've saved, we can afford the down p*****t for our house and finally move out. It'll be just the two of us."
Evan was a little touched, because he knew Rachel wanted to have their own house only because she didn't want him to be put down and bossed around by her parents again.
"I don't think so, sweetheart. The staff said it cannot be returned. Even if there is any quality problem, all they can do is fix it for free. How about you just keep it, and as to our own house, I'll find a job and we'll do this together?"
"You're looking for a job?" Rachel's face lit up: "Is it true? Evan, why would you suddenly want a job?"
Evan smiled: "It's been three years. I'm fully recovered now. It's time to get a job. Besides, your mother has warned me today. If I can't find a job in three days, I'll be kicked out."
"But are you really well enough to be working?" Rachel was a little worried.
For the past three years, Rachel had never complained once about Evan's not working, because it was for her sake that he got hurt.
It was on a late night three years ago, Rachel was on her way home from work, when some psychos came out of nowhere and tried to r**e her.
Fortunately, Evan was in the neighborhood.
He saved her but was stabbed in the small of his back in the process, and almost died of blood loss. The hospital gave him some blood and he made it alive, but the doctor said it was a permanent damage, and that Evan wouldn't be able to lift anything heavy, or strain his muscles for the rest of his life.
Later, Rachel took it upon herself to take care of him while he was in the hospital, and that was when they began to have feelings for each other.
Eventually, Rachel married Evan despite her entire family's objection; because she liked him, was grateful to him, and perhaps also because she felt sorry about his injury.
