Chapter 7 Get Your Asses Here

1138 Words
Josie was worried that Rachel might rat her out to her parents, so she decided to hit first and let her parents hear her side of the story. Therefore, when Evan and Rachel entered the house, they found themselves facing an angry Helen. Helen glared at them: "You two, get your asses here!" Rachel asked, a little perplexed: "Mom, what's going on?" Helen accused: "What's going on? Did you or did you not smack Ray's car, sabotaging their date?" Rachel protested: "Mom, that's not what happened..." Helen cut her off: "Not a word! Josie told me everything. She and Ray made out a little, so what? No one saw it. And you, you're the one your father and I are truly disappointed in. You married a loser, and humiliated us in front of all our friends!" "Now that we can't expect anything from you and your loser of a husband, we can only count on Josie and Ray. With such a rich and handsome son-in-law as Ray, we can finally look good in front of the neighbors. And we wouldn't have to worry about money again. I wouldn't have you two ruin that." Rachel was a little hurt at these words: "Mom, I wasn't trying to sabotage their relationship. I was just worried that Josie might get hurt." Josie curled her lips: "Oh really?! Get hurt how? Ray is really nice to me. He buys me everything I want. And just tonight, I asked him if he could arrange a job for Evan, and he said yes immediately." Helen went on: "Did you hear that? Ray is good to Josie. So mind your own business. And Evan, when Ray gets you a job, I want you to start working and get your ass out of the house immediately!" Rachel's eyes turned red. She fought back the tears and ran towards her bedroom. Evan didn't bother arguing with Helen. He followed suit and went to the bedroom. "I'm so sorry, sweetheart. It's me who Helen is angry with. Sorry she took it out on you." Rachel took a few deep breathes and blinked back the tears: "Maybe I was just being nosy. What Josie wants to do with herself is her own business. I shouldn't get involved. But it's a good thing that Ray agreed to arrange a job for you. With his status, I'm sure he can hook you up with something nice. Evan, promise me you'll work hard, achieve something and shove it in their faces!" "I promise, sweetheart." Evan soothed her. But deep down, he knew Ray wouldn't get him anything nice. If Ray got him a job at his restaurant, he was definitely not going. The next morning, Rachel left for work as usual. As was the routine, Evan washed the dishes, took out the garbage, and went to the grocery store. After that, he decided to stop by the nearby park, to relax a little, and to get away from Helen. Believe him, Helen Scott wasn't a mother-in-law you want to come home to. So Evan waited until it was about noon before going back home. He was still cooking when he heard the door click open. He heard Helen ask: "Rachel? Why are you home so early?" "I took a day off. I'm not feeling well." With that, Rachel hurried to her bedroom. Evan came out of the kitchen but only saw her back. Usually, Rachel wouldn't come home for lunch. Her lunch break was too short to allow that. It was weird that she'd come home at noon today. Evan went to their bedroom, hoping to check on her, but the door was locked from inside. "Rachel, is everything okay? Anything I can get you?" "No, I'm fine. I'm just a little tired. I won't be having lunch today. Not hungry." Evan frowned upon this. Something was definitely wrong. He could tell by the way Rachel's voice was choking. He went to the living room and announced to Helen: "Mrs Scott, I'm heading out. You'll need to cook lunch today." Helen called out behind him: "What?! Where are you going?" Evan went downstairs, and took a cab to DH real estate sales center, Rachel's company. Something must have happened at Rachel's workplace. He needed to know. Several estate agents were eating takeouts when he went in. Mia saw him, and asked grumpily: "Evan? What are you doing here?" Evan didn't mind her attitude: "Do you have a moment?" Mia glanced at her colleagues before putting down her fork and getting up: "Yeah. Let's take it outside." They went out. Evan was about to speak, but Mia beat him to it: "Are you here for Rachel?" Evan furrowed his brows: "So you know. She seems a bit off today. Did someone here bully her?" Mia sneered: "And what are you gonna do about it? The person we're talking about here is our manager, Sam Hill. His father is a real estate tycoon in York. Can you afford to piss him off?" Evan's eyes darkened, and he looked cold: "What did he do to Rachel?" Mia replied: "I don't know. I wasn't there. But Sam asked Rachel to go to his office. And when Rachel came out, she was in tears, her clothes a bit messy. And now you know." Evan clenched his fists with rage. It didn't take a genius to guess what happened. "Where is Sam Hill?" "He's not here." Mia sneered: "Like I said, there's nothing you can do about it. And actually, you know what, maybe this is a good thing. You're a poor wretch, and Sam, on the other hand, is loaded with his father's money. If you and Rachel get divorced and Sam marries her, she'll be super rich." Evan stormed off without saying another word. He took another cab and headed towards DH Group, Sam's father's company. "Is Jim Hill here?" Evan asked the receptionist with a cold face. The receptionist checked Evan out, and her face immediately turned into one of contempt when she saw Evan's cheap clothes. "Who are you, and what business do you have? He's not here now." Evan asked again: "Where is he? Tell him I want to see him." The receptionist snorted with laughter: "Who the hell do you think you are? And you want to meet our boss? You wish!" Evan didn't bother arguing with her further. He took out his phone and made a call. Soon, it went through and was answered. "Hello, this is Evan Johnson." "Hello Mr. Evan, you've reached the Johnson family's internal line. What can I do for you?" "I don't care how you do it, but I want Jim Hill of DH Group to meet me in half an hour. Tell him to get his asses here. I'll be waiting at his company's gate."
