Chapter : 5. My past..

Alice’s point of view :-

Currently, I am sitting in father Hector's room, helping him treat his wounds. The kids have calmed down and went to rest while I am not calm at all. I have made my choice. The only way to save the orphanage is by accepting the old lady’s offer. There’s no way we will be able to collect two million dollars in a week except this. I have to marry a werewolf.

“Alice. Tell me the truth, child. What have you done? How did you get the money? You said you have the money. How? Did you do some sin?” I put my hands in my lap and eyes down. I have to tell him the truth.

“That old lady who came to meet me the other day, she gave me an offer. She wants me to marry her grandson in return for the money. She also agrees to take the whole responsibility of the orphanage if I agree.”

“Wait. Does that mean.. She wants you to marry a werewolf?”

“Not any werewolf. A billionaire alpha.”

“What? This is madness. Why does she want a human mate for an alpha?”

“He has a little daughter, and she’s looking for a girl who can give her a mother’s love. I saved that girl one day and now she thinks I can save her all her life.”

“And you are thinking about accepting her offer? Alice. You can’t do that. Not after what happend to you before. I made a mistake once. But I will not make another one by sacrificing you for the orphanage. I can’t push you to death for the mistakes I have done. You are not accepting her offer. We will find another way to pay the debt.”

“There are no other ways. There’s no way we can get two million dollars in a week. I even lost my jobs at this time. We need her help. It’s the only way.”

“No. We will leave the orphanage. We will find another home for everyone and..”

“And force all those kids into the same fate I went through? You know there’s no home for us orphan humans. No one will help us. This is the only place where they can be safe. Not only for now, but for the future. Not only for them, but also for those who are on their way here. They need this place to survive. We have to make this sacrifice for all of them. I am ready to give this a chance. You have to be ready too.” I couldn’t stop a single drop of tear fall from my eyes by remembering my past. It’s the only thing that still hurts so much.

Father Hector was not ready to agree to this, but I know what I am doing. So, instead of just waiting around, I thought to call Caroline and tell her about my decision. I need the money as fast as possible.

“Hello? Mrs. Caroline? It’s me, Alice.”

“Oh! Darling. I was thinking about you right now. I was planning to call you soon. So, have you made your decision yet?”

“Yes. I have.”

“So..”

“I will marry your grandson. I agree with your offer. But I have a request. I need something that confirms that you will protect the orphanage even after the marriage or your death. And I need the money by this week to pay the dept.”

“Oh Honey! You don’t have to worry about anything anymore. The orphanage is now my responsibility. I will handle the people you owe money to. And of course you will get conformation. We will sign a contract that will keep both of us in our words. I will come by soon with the contract. Be prepared. Oh! You don’t know how happy you just made me. Goddess be always kind to you.”

I can’t believe I just did this. I agreed to marry a werewolf. Who is this person I am marrying anyway? I just know that he is a billionaire alpha, and he has a little daughter. And I also saw his wolf once. But that’s it. I don’t even remember his name. And if he wants to marry me, then why didn’t he come to talk to me yet? Isn’t he supposed to be the one with the proposal?

What am I thinking? He is an alpha. There’s no way he will come to a human to propose. This is not a love marriage. This is just a contract marriage. And I have to be the one serving them as a slave in the name of a wife. I know my fate. I can see my future there. It’s nothing like I have ever imagined. This is not my fairytale.

It’s been a few days since I made my decision. And since then, I feel my heart is broken somehow. I have started being more distant and silent than before. All I can think now is how I am going to manage in their house? How I am going to mange with all those strangers? I know nothing about them. I know nothing about my soon to be husband. One thing tings me the most is what happend to that little girl’s mother? Where did she go that they need me in her place?

“Where is she? Alice! Come out right now.” I was sitting in my room, looking out the window, when I saw a car speeding in and an angry Caroline rushing out of it. And before I can go out to talk to her, I heard her scream for me. What happend to her?

“Madam.. Please. You are going to scare the kids. Is there some problem? Let me call her for you.”

“Yes, I have a problem. Both of you are liars. Cheaters. You wanted to trick me for my money. You thought that you can trick an old lady into getting her money. Yes, I might be old, but my soul is sharp like a hawk. It’s not that easy to trick me.” The moment I got out, I found her insulting father Hector for no reason.

“Mrs. Caroline. Is everything all right?”

“No. It’s not. How dare you think that I will not check before giving you the money? You tried to trick me into believing that you are innocent. But I found out that you are not what you look.” She still kept insulting us instead of telling what’s wrong.

“I don’t understand. What do you mean? How did I trick you?”

“You tricked me by lying to me. Why didn’t you tell me that you are a murderer? You killed a werewolf and you are still living here freely, like you did nothing. What was your plan, huh? Were you planning to marry into our house and kill us all to take everything we have? You sly bi*ch. I am going to tear down this place right now.”

My body froze to hear that and I can feel my hands getting cold. My breathing got erratic and I think I am going to have another panic attack. She found out. She pulled out my horrible past and brought it in front of me. I started shaking soon and my keens were getting weaker to stand on my own. I was about to fall down.

“Alice. It’s okay. I am here. Come inside. You need to sit down. Madam. Please come with us. Let me tell you the truth. Give us a chance.” Father Hector took me into his chest and led us towards his room. I was walking blindly because tears were covering my vision. I never thought my past was going to come and hit me in every step of my life.

“Sit here, child. Madam. Please. Take a seat.” He sat me down on his bed and offered Caroline the chair.

“I am not here to sit. I am here for a good explanation for not tearing down this orphanage.”

“Madam. It’s not as you are thinking. Alice is not a murderer. She is the most kind and sweet innocent girl I have ever seen in my life. It was a mistake. A mistake I did. And for that, she is paying all these years. Believe me. She has no fault in this.”

“Well, that’s not what her police records say. It clearly says that he killed a werewolf brutally and no one else was there till she was discovered. I just wonder how you got away with it. How did they let you go instead of hanging you for your crime?”

“They didn’t kill her because she was just a child and she was only protecting herself. She was self defending.”

“Self defending?”

“Yes. She came to me very young. She was always this beautiful and sweet thing. When she was about thirteen years old, a werewolf couple decided to adopt her. I was happy that she was chosen to have a good life at such a time when no one thinks about helping humans. So, I didn’t check on them and handed her over to them. Little did I know that they were monsters in the disguise of a happy couple. They only took her in to make her a maid and a plaything for their kids. And not just for the kids. Her adoptive parents took joy abusing her too. They were physically and mentally torturing her. They were.. One day, she couldn’t take it anymore. She was in so much pain that she hit him in the head with whatever she found within her reach and killed him. She just wanted to save herself.” I couldn’t stop my sobs from remembering that time. I still have nightmares of that day. I don’t think I can ever forget what I have been through in that house.

“But.. there’s no mention of such a case in her file. It just says that she killed a werewolf. It says she is a murderer. There’s no mention of her being a victim or self defence.”

“That’s because we made a deal with that family. They offered to let her be free in return for keeping their actions a secret. No one knew what they did to her and in return, she got to come back to me. If you could see her at that time. So broken and so fragile. She looked like a corpse. It took me months to help her overcome those fears. And you know why she loves these orphan kids? Because that time, they helped her forget those horrible memories. Our Alice might have gone through too much, but her behavior and kindness never changed. She’s still the best.” Hearing the truth, Caroline came to me and kneeled down in front of me. I was shocked to see her like that.

“I am sorry, Alice. I spoke out too much without knowing the whole truth. I was wrong about you. Now I know that I have made a right choice by accepting you into our family. You deserve this. You deserve a good life. Maybe this is how a goddess wants to pay for what few of her creations did to you.”

I felt pity in her words. Like she wants me to give a place as a pay for what her kind did to me. And I know that this is going to go on for the rest of my life if I go to their house. I can’t do this. I can sacrifice everything, but I don’t want to be pitied forever. I don’t want to be among those people who know what they can do to me and how vulnerable I am in front of them.

“I am sorry, Mrs Caroline. I can’t marry your grandson. Not after this. I am sorry that I have wasted too much of your time. I just can’t.”

“What? Do you know what you are saying? You are giving up everything I am offering you. What about the orphanage? Without my help, you can’t save it.”

“We will find another way. We still have a week to think about it. Maybe we will find another home to settle in.” I looked up at father Hector, who nodded at me to let me know that he supports my decision. We will see what happens after this..
