After dinner, I walked to my room and fell on my bed exhausted. It was one thing to be stuck with Hiro for a month at home, but another to be stuck with him on a cruise ship for a week. Don’t get me wrong, I was happy about going, but at the same time, I was completely overwhelmed by everything that happened. As I drifted off into dreamland, I found myself running through this beautiful forest at night, only I didn’t seem to be enjoying it. Instead, I was scared. Kayla, I heard a voice call as I ran as fast as I could while at the same time trying to catch my breath. Run faster, they’re coming. The voice repeated in a louder tone. RUN!! It yelled.
Suddenly I was awake, and sitting up in my bed. That’s when I caught the strong smell of smoke coming from outside my door. Without thinking, I hopped out of bed and then ran to my door to open it. To my horror, the entire hall was on fire and I couldn’t get out. “MOM!!” I yelled.
“KAYLA!!” My mother yelled. Her voice trembled.
“Honey, you can’t go up there. Get the younger ones out, I’ll get Kayla,” my stepfather said.
“No, I’ll get her,” Hiro offered.
“It’s OK, I’ll go out the window,” I yelled. I had no idea how I was going to pull it off, but there was no way in hell I was going to risk my family coming to the attic to get me when I could save them.
“No Kayla, I’m coming,” Hiro said. Suddenly, a board dropped from the ceiling, completely blocking my escape.
“KAYLA!!” They yelled.
“I’m ok. I’m going out the window, don’t come up here,” I said. I then ran back into my room, busted my windows out, and threw my luggage out to soften my landing. I then tied my bedsheets together with one end of the bed rail before climbing out my window. The house was ablaze, but I couldn’t look back, I just had to hope my stepfather got everyone out, and to my delight, when I got out the window, I saw my family looking at me, with Hana holding a crying Solana in her arms.
“Careful,” my mother said with tears in her eyes and moving her hands as if trying to direct me in my movement. I started to jump but was forcibly pulled back by an explosion and suddenly found myself back in the room with flames all around me. It was as if they were targeting me.
“KAYLA!!” I heard my mother scream. As the flames closed all around me, I knew I had only one shot, so I ran as fast as I could through the fire and jumped out the window. I was sure I still had the sheet connected to me, but it didn’t matter. The worst thing that could happen would be me breaking a few bones, but luckily I was caught by Hiro who, from my perspective, was flying.
“Are you OK?” He asked as we landed on the ground. I didn’t ask any questions, didn’t have time to because my mother was already holding me, kissing my cheeks, and crying tears of joy while the rest of my family did the same thing.
You’re not safe yet run! I heard the voice say again.
“We gotta go,” I said, hysterical.
“You’re right, get in the car,” my stepfather said. I grabbed my suitcases off the ground and put them in the car.
"Are you OK? It was smart to grab your suitcases. I think the only one I have is the one with the tickets in them,” Hana said.
This way. I heard the voice say. The voice sounded like it was coming from the side of me.
“Turn left,” I said.
“Left Kayla why?” My stepfather asked.
“It’s the closest way to the police,” I said, only because I had no idea how to tell them that an unseen voice was talking to me. My stepfather nodded, then turned left, and right in front of us was this swirly thing that looked like a portal from one of those sci-fi shows my stepfather watched.
“You see that?” My stepfather asked my mother.
“I see it,” my mother responded happily.
“We all see it,” Hana said.
“We should probably avoid it,” Hiro suggested. However, neither of our parents listened, instead, they kept straight and the next thing we knew, we were in a forest surrounded by trees, and in the far distance was what looked like a palace.
“What just happened?” Hana asked, just as confused as the rest of us were. Our parents stopped the car then got out and hugged each other.
“We’re back,” I heard my stepfather say.
“Back where?” I asked as the rest of us got out of the car.
“Atlantis,” My mother said, through tears of joy, while my siblings and I stood there in
utter confusion.
“Where?” Hiro asked. Right as he finished his statement, we were surrounded by what looked like soldiers with wings and each of them was wearing black armor and had staffs pointing at us. Each person looked angry as if we had invaded their lands and not somehow found our way into it.
“You are trespassing on the king's ground. That’s high treason, state your name,” This big buff guy that I assumed was the leader said with so much animosity in his voice that I was sure we were going to die.
“Mizuki Aioki I want to see the king,” my stepfather said, and everyone started to say his name among themselves.
“Aioki?” The buff guy said, before embracing my stepfather.
“It’s good to see you too, Malachi. It’s been ages,” my stepfather said.
“Who’s that?” Gab asked. I shrugged.
“It has. Come, we will escort you personally to the king. Bring that contraption as well,” he told the people behind us. My mother threw one of the men the keys, and we followed the feathered soldiers towards the large palace in the center of town. The buildings were spaced out and looked like a mixture of modern and medieval and the weird part was they were floating.
