Chapter 3: Hiro

1230 Words
I walked out of Kayla’s room feeling miserable. Everything that she said she felt about me was how I felt about her, and I was ready to confess that today; however, that long drive with my father from Miami made me change my mind. The night before I broke things off with Kayla, my father came home and caught us in bed together. She was sleeping soundly in my arms, and I was staring at her, mesmerized by how beautiful she was and happy that it finally happened, that the girl of my dreams was finally mine. Then he came into the room. I thought he was going to yell at both of us, but instead, he silently made me get out of bed and come downstairs. I told him how much she meant to me, but he kept reminding me that our relationship would never work out, and he would never approve. I didn’t care at first until he brought up the word family and how it would tear us all apart. So against my better judgment, I broke things off with Kayla and regretted it ever since. The only person who knew about this was my twin who said she was secretly rooting for us but at the same time understood our father’s point of view. I did as well, but it didn’t change how I felt. My love for her was stronger than ever. “Did you talk to Kayla?” Hana asked as I made my way out of my room. I had just finished my shower and gotten dressed. I wanted to slowly get ready just so I could watch Kayla descend the stairs. Kayla was beautiful, with long curly brown hair, soft brown eyes, and thick in all the right places. Her skin was flawless, and she had natural plump lips, and her smile always took my breath away. “I talked to her, but it wasn’t the conversation I wanted to have,” I said, then slowly made my way down the second flight of stairs, leading to the kitchen, with Hana beside me. “I’m sorry. I know how you feel about each other, and like I said, I’m rooting for you. I love Kayla. She’s amazing, but our parents love each other and,” she started to say. “I’m not planning on forcing them to divorce, I promise,” I assured her. I then walked into the dining room where our parents and younger siblings were waiting. Solana gave me a hug and a kiss, then went back to playing with her toys in her highchair. “Where’s Kayla did she go to sleep?” my stepmother asked as she placed the food down on the table in front of us. That day she decided to serve a mixture of Japanese and Puerto Rican cuisine, making me even more curious about whether she was having another baby or not. “$50 it’s a baby,” I whispered under my breath to Hana. “You’re on,” Hana said, and we shook on it. A moment later, Kayla walked into the room. Her hair was up in a messy bun, and she was wearing some leggings and a short-sleeved shirt, and yet I still couldn’t stop myself from staring. “Oh, this looks good Mom,” Kayla said, as she took a seat between Gab and Solana, completely ignoring me. “Gracias mi amor. I was just in a festive mood,” my stepmother said, giddy. She then took her seat next to my father, who took her hand and placed it on the table. “Are you pregnant?” Kayla asked, causing my father, who had just drunk a glass of water, to spit it out. “No sweetie. I’m not pregnant. A baby at my age?” Her mother asked. Kayla pointed at Solana who was two going on three. “Oh right. But no, it’s not a baby, it’s better,” my stepmother said. “Damn, I lost the bet,” I said, without thinking. “That’ll be 50 bucks,” Hana said. I sighed, pulled out my phone, and transferred $50 from my bank to hers. “Thank you.” She said. “You two bet on this?” My father asked, amused. “Yeah. Ya’ll good news is never good news. So, what’s the so-called good news today?” I asked, ready for them to tell me, so I could go about my day obsessing over Kayla. “What are you talking about? All of our good news has been good news,” my father said. “Really?” Hana asked forwarding her brow. “Olvidalo, here,” my stepmother said, before handing each of us an envelope. At first, I was too nervous to open it, but when I did, a huge smile spread across my lips. “Hontoni? Are we really going on a cruise through Japan?” I asked, excited. All my life I had wanted to visit Japan and see where my family came from. Now I could, and I would be going with the love of my life. The only problem was I couldn’t act on those feelings. Still, it was great that we would be stuck in the same place for seven days. “Es increbile. How did you guys get these tickets? They must have cost a fortune?” Kayla asked excitedly. “I’ve been saving, and the best part is that after our cruise through Japan, we are flying down to Puerto Rico for a week,” my father said. “That explains the meal. Wow, this is so awesome. I have to go shopping. When do we leave?” Hana asked. “Our flights to Japan are for tomorrow afternoon,” my stepmother said. “That leaves plenty of time to go shopping,” Hana said. “Not for you it doesn’t. You spend the entire day at the mall,” I said. “Plus didn’t you just buy something yesterday?” My father asked. “Yes, to wear here, not in Japan?” Hana retorted. “Why don’t you wait until we get to Japan to go shopping? It looks like our cruise is set for Wednesday,” Kayla asked and that made Hana even more excited. “Oh my God you are so right. I knew there was a reason you were my sister. I got to go plan,” Hana said, standing up. “Would you eat your food,” my stepmother teased. “Right food is important,” Hana said, then finally picked up the chopsticks and started eating the fish. “Mom this is amazing, I can’t wait to go. Thank you both so much. I really needed this vacation,” Kayla said. “We all do. We wanted to do it two years ago, but Hana had to get to school early, so we had to wait a year,” my stepmother said. “Hey it doesn’t matter if you had to wait a year or twenty, I’m just happy we’re going. Right, Gab?’ I said excited. Gab shook his head yes then went back to gulping down his food. After that, the conversation changed to school life and our grades which unsurprisingly were A’s across the board, and for the rest of the dinner we celebrated what was to come.
