When I stepped inside I was overwhelmed by the sweet scent of gardenias and a smile flushed my face. The place itself was beautifully decorated with both a modern and a country twist. There was a long hallway with about six doors alongside it and if you went further you’d find the kitchen that was the same size as our dining room, kitchen, and living room combined and servants were walking around inside preparing a meal. There were about ten bedrooms with queen-sized beds and a sitting area, eight modern bathrooms, a sewing room, a study, a library, and in the backyard were horses' stables and a pond.
“Wow, this place is huge,” Hana said, as we sat down on one of the couches in the large living room.
“If only they had a TV,” I said.
“Can I watch Iron Man?” Gab asked.
“Later,” my mother said, then looked at her parents and said, “I still can’t believe I’m back.”
“Neither can we. It seems like it was only yesterday you were crossing the realm with Jordan to escape. I didn’t think we’d see you again,” her mother said tearfully.
“But I’m back. It’s been almost 20 years, but I finally made it home,” my mother said.
“You’re not leaving again are you?” my aunt Elena asked with a look of fear on her face.
My mother shook her head, “No, even if we could, I wouldn’t, and we have no idea how we got here,” she said unsurprisingly.
“You don’t?” my grandfather asked.
“No. Late last night, our house burned down and after that a portal appeared, and we escaped, and now we’re home and my children can grow up here,” my mother said.
“I am grown up. I’ll be 20 in two weeks,” Hana said.
“Hana, you are still a child, you have to respect your elders,” I teased.
“Shut up Kayla,” she ordered, and I laughed.
“You two are funny. But she is right. You are considered an adolescent here and therefore should be in school for the next ten or so years. After that, you do training to see where you will be placed,” our uncle said.
“Placed, like sorted? And I’m already in school. College, I’m studying to be a doctor,” Hana pouted.
“A doctor, like a healer?” Our grandfather asked.
“Yes, just like a healer. Hana has a true calling for it. When she was a little girl her father told me that she healed her bunny rabbit,” my mother said, and both Hana and I looked at her.
“You did? You have superpowers like Iron Man?” Gab asked, starry-eyed.
“Iron Man doesn’t have superpowers, he’s just really smart, but is that true? I actually healed my bunny?” Hana said.
“Yeah, I think he said you were about 5 and that’s when he put that dampener on you,” My mother said, pointing to a bracelet that Hana never took off.
“Really. So this wasn’t from my mom?” Hana asked, upset.
“What’s inside is, but not the bracelet,” my mother assured her.
“Oh. I thought I had fire magic?” Hana asked nonchalantly.
“You do, but you also have healing magic, you got that from your grandmother,” My mother informed her.
“It’s not uncommon for a fairy to have more than one type of power, but the elements are different. Every fairy has an element that they are strongest in. You’ll learn all of this at the academy,” our uncle Mateo said.
“Can’t wait,” Hana said, just as Hiro and my stepfather Aioki walked into the room.
“In-laws,” Aioki said, with a huge smile on his face. His arms were open wide while Hiro stood behind him as if he didn’t want to be there.
“Aioki, you’re still alive,” our grandfather said, and all my siblings except a confused Solana laughed.
“Really dad?” my mother asked, with an eye roll.
“What, I’m kidding. Welcome home, Aioki. I knew you would be my son-in-law someday. It was just a matter of time,” my grandfather said as he and the rest of the family embraced my stepfather.
“Thank you, I did too,” my stepfather said. “I see you’ve already met my daughter Hana, and this is my son Hiro. Hiro, this is the beautiful Sofia, your grandmother, your grandfather Diego, your aunts, Elena, Lola, and your uncle Mateo. These are your stepmother’s parents," my stepfather said proudly.
“Wow, you look a lot like your father. Hopefully, you don’t take after him,” our aunt Lola said.
“What’s wrong with taking after me?” my stepfather asked, pretending to be offended.
“I could tell you stories,” my uncle started to say.
“Let’s not,” my stepfather said, cutting him off. “Hiro go sit next to your sister,” my stepfather ordered, and Hiro walked towards the couch and, as expected, sat next to Hana.
“What did I miss?” Hiro asked dryly.
“Well, Harry Potter, you always wanted to go to Hogwarts, now you can,” Hana said, sarcastically. She had been calling him Harry Potter since we were kids, because of his love for movies, books, and everything magic. Besides being an all-star athlete, Hiro was a major fantasy and gaming nerd.
“Oh, I already know that. The king told me,” Hiro said dryly. Which was weird because I thought he would have had a different reaction.
