As we left the palace, I couldn’t help but look back at Hiro, who was pretending like he didn’t see me. I then sighed and turned my attention to the path in front of me. The palace was beautiful at night, but seeing it in the daytime, reminded me that I was truly in a different world, or realm as they called it. The grass was a lot greener than the one back home and the air felt fresh and sweet. There was also a garden a few feet away and a gazebo in the center. The palace itself was grand and reminded me of the Taj Mahal back in India.
“This place is beautiful,” I said as my eyes drifted from one part of the palace to the other.
“And big. How much further until we’re out of here? I need a shower and to change. I can not keep wearing my nightgown all day,” Hana said, suddenly bringing my attention to my own clothes.
When I went to bed last night in my bedroom, I was wearing a long shirt and boy shorts, not really the outfit for a royal summons. However, when Hiro and my stepdad left, they had actually changed into some weird clothes from this place that I assumed were given to them by the king or the servants. If only they would have given us some too. I thought.
“We’re almost out. Just go through that gate and the car should be parked in front. However, after we get it to my mother’s house, we won’t be able to use it anymore,” my mother informed us. She was holding Solana while Hana and I held Gab’s hands.
“Why not?” I asked, curiously.
“Because we don’t use gas or oil here. We use water for our machines and many of them fly. Though I’m almost positive my brother may be able to fix that car,” my mother said.
“Did you say it flies?” Hana asked.
“And since when do you have brothers?” I asked because she never talked about them.
“I’ve had brothers since the day I was born. And yes, Hana they fly, also when your dad gets back, I’m sure he’s gonna want to take you to visit your mother’s family and her grave,” my mother said with a soft smile, just as we made it out of the palace.
“I hope so,” Hana said. The car was parked exactly where my mother said with a guard next to it. One of them I recognized as Malachi from the night before.
“Your Grace. My men did the best they could with the engine so it should run here, but take it to your brother as soon as you can. It may be archaic, but it is very roomie”, Malachi said.
“Archaic? That’s a new model,” Hana said appalled.
“Mommy, what does archaic mean?” Gab asked as I opened the back door.
“Old sweetie. And I will definitely get it to my brother. Thank you, Malachi,” my mother said. She then strapped Solana in her car seat, and I got in behind her, allowing Hana to take the front.
“My pleasure, your grace, if there is anything you need, just let us know,” Malachi said, as my mother got in the car.
“Will do,” See ya.” With that, she closed her door and drove off. I started to lay my head against the window, but I couldn’t stop myself from staring at the scene in front of me. The place looked like a cross between a metropolitan city and a medieval kingdom. There were skyscrapers the size of the Empire State Building in New York and cottages that looked like they came out of a period drama. Then there were the stores which Hana spent the entire ride ogling over and I knew what my day was going to look like. But besides all that, there was an area that looked like the Japanese street market in Little Tokyo and I started to feel homesick.
“I can’t believe this place looks like this. I’ve never seen so much forest before in my life, especially in a city,” Hana said.
“Right, makes it hard to tell where we are and what time period it is,” I said.
“This place is weird,” Gab said, his face was pressed against the window, and he was looking curiously out at the town.
“I’ll say,” a few minutes later, we arrived at this beautiful estate that reminded me of those mansions in the country with a medieval twist. It had two stories, and the house was rather wide with a lot of land behind it. There wasn’t a driveway per se nor were there actual paved roads, but there was a place to park your car and automobiles if you chose to use one.
“Wow?” Hana said, the moment we got out the car.
“Who lives here the president?” Gab asked, in awe.
“This is my old home,” my mother said emotionally.
A second later, the front door opened and outran three young-looking women and two young men behind them, but I could kind of tell that they were older than they appeared. The women looked a bit like my mother. The difference was the hair color and the different frown lines and eye shapes, which gave them each their own unique look. All of them had deep tan skin, with the men being the darkest. One of the men was my mother's height with green eyes and an average build, but he had a very beautiful face. The other was tall about my stepfather’s height, skinny with blonde hair and blue eyes, but I could tell he was a part of the family. “Catalina. I can’t believe you’re home,” the lady with the gray hair said as she and the rest of that family hugged my mother.
“It’s so good to be home. Mom, Dad, Mateo, Elena, and Lola, these are my children. This is Hana, Kayla, Gabriel, and Solana. Kids, this is your grandmother Sofia, your grandfather Diego, your aunts, Elena, Lola, and your uncle Mateo,” my mother said happily.
“It’s good to see you in person. Your mother talks about you all the time especially you Kayla. Come inside,” my grandfather said, ushering us into the house.
“Just her and not me? That’s bias Mom,” Hana said, in a playful way and I laughed.
“of course I talked about you, but they just ask about Kayla the most because she’s human,” my mother said, as we walked into the house.
