Roselyn was so nervous for the first day of college she couldn’t sleep. She kept waking herself up. That or she still wasn’t used to sleeping in the dorms. Olivia was a snorer. That didn’t help either.
Rose woke up at six in the morning. She had an eight o’clock class clear across campus. Rose grabbed a quick shower, and threw on some clothes. A tshirt and jeans. Rose also didn’t bother to do anything with her hair either, it always ended up being a frizzy mess. Rose looked and saw that Olivia was still snoring away. She was lucky, she had a nine o’clock class right across the street.
Rose walked down to the dorm cafeteria. While not all dorms on campus had a cafeteria, hers did. She was lucky in that aspect she thought. Rose went and grabbed herself some cereal. The cafeteria offered pretty much every breakfast food. But Rose loved cereal! She could eat a whole box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch in a day if her mom would let her.
Rose sat with her cereal and watched everyone around her. Rose tried not to let jealousy bubble up inside her, but she couldn’t help it. She watched everyone talk and chat like they had been best friends for years. Rose couldn’t understand why she never make friends easy. She always had to bend over backwards just to get someone to talk to her.
Then she heard it, his laugh. Rose looked over in horror and saw Scott. Roselyn couldn’t believe he was here. Rose got up as quickly and quietly as she could to get out of the cafeteria. Rose felt tears come to her eyes, she hated herself for crying but she couldn’t help it. Scott always made her cry.
Roselyn walked to her first class, and remembered her graduation day. Her humiliation still fresh, all of her classmates still laughing at her. Roselyn checked the sheet that had everyone’s plans for after graduation. Her name was the only one that said NorthWestern on it. Just to be safe she checked Scott’s name, and it had said Milikin. So what in the world was he doing here?
Roselyn walked to her first class thinking back on her senior of high school. Her school was a small one, but big enough to have a group of popular kids. Roselyn had a couple of friends, but they weren’t very close. They were just people she hung out at the lunch table. Rose was partnered up with Scott in a science project. When she got there Scot was working on his Algebra homework, and Rose offered to work through it with him.
While she wasn’t super smart, she finished her math homework last night. They spent an hour on his math homework, then started working on their science project. The next time the met Scott was super excited to show her that he got an “A” on his homework. Rose was happy to help him. Rose didn’t know that was just the beginning.
Rose checked her schedule again, double checking the building, and the class number. She checked the building plaque. Yup that’s Stipes hall, okay now got to find room 207. It took her too long to realize that the two part meant it was on the second floor. So Rose found the stairway and climbed the two flights of stairs.
Rose finally found the room, and already found several students in the large classroom. Rose sat down, and waited for the class to start.
.
.
Rose got out of her third class starving. She looked at her phone, and saw it was one o’clock. She needed to grab some lunch. Rose saw she also had some texts from Olivia.
Livy: woke up where r u?
Livy: must be in class txt me.
Livy: had to go to class txt me to meet up for lunch.
.
Rose looked, and all of the texts were at different times, so she typed out a different response.
.
Me: sorry I missed your texts. Love to meet up for lunch, just got out of a long bio lab.
Livy: yay! Missed u. Meet us at the cafe next to Morgan.
Rose started walking to the Morgan hall, she was worried she had no idea where this cafe was located at. She was going to have to ask Olivia. She felt her back pocket vibrate. Rose grabbed her phone.
Livy: Kane is coming too!
.
Rose groaned, he scared her.
.
Kane pov
.
How did his sister convince him to come meet her for lunch? Right, she FaceTimed him and gave him the puppy eyes look. Olivia asked him to meet on the cafe on campus, so he parked at the meters. Kane started walking toward the cafe. While he never been to school here, he used to party here before he got serious about his fighting.
Kane found his sister in no time, and he ignored the stares.
“How was your first day of classes?” Kane asked his sister. Olivia had her head in her phone, texting away. A waitress came up to them, once she recognized her eyes turned bright with excitement.
“Your Kane!”
“Yeah I am, can I get some water please?” Kane asked trying to be nice. That didn’t stop the waitress from going on a long diatribe about his last fight.
“Thank you ma’am, can I please get some water. My sister would like some as well.” The waitress ignored his subtle attempt at redirection. She just kept prattling on, before he said something his sister did.
“Look lady, he’s not going to have s*x with you right here! So just get our waters or I’ll ask your manager to find some one that will!” Olivia said in a loud whisper. While Olivia wasn’t yelling, other customers still heard and started laughing. The waitress was furious,
“Look b***h!” Kane was furious, he stood up. His body ready for a fight,
“No your the b***h, you came onto me like a dog in heat.” He told her lethally, and she started to shrink away from him. He only followed her. “I was trying to be nice, but you wouldn’t allow it. How dare you insult my sister!” The manager finally head the ruckus came out, and asked what was going on. His sister stood up,
“That woman called me a b***h, when all I did was tell her my brother wasn’t interested.” The manager looked at the waitress,
“I told you I wasn’t going to deal with your theatrics any more! Come with me!” When the manager, and waitress left there stood Olivia’s roommate. The poor thing looked scared, nervous, and bewildered.
“What’s going on?” Roselyn asked, and Olivia ran up to her. Olivia guided her to our table. Kane slowly sat down, he looked between the two woman. Olivia’s random invite to the college campus finally became clear. His sister was trying to set him up! Kane let out a random laugh, and Olivia scolded him.
“Kane this isn’t funny,” Kane sobered up.
“Your right, it’s not.” They had a decent lunch after they had a new waitress. This one didn’t hit on him.
Kane looked at the woman Olivia was trying to set him up with. Kane did like bigger girls. He was a big guy, skinny girls didn’t appeal to him. Kane didn’t like feeling like he was going to break them if he f****d them hard. But, Roselyn was innocent. She couldn’t handle a guy like him.
Kane didn’t understand why Olivia was doing it though. Roselyn seemed to be her first real friend in such a long time. Why would she want to share that friend with him?
.
They ended lunch, and Roselyn left for the dorms. Kane turned to Olivia,
“So are you going to tell me why you are trying to set me up with your only friend?” Kane asked Olivia. Kane thought she would deny it but Olivia didn’t.
“I don’t know. I just think she would be good for you. Good for your anger, she makes you laugh, smile. No one has done that.”
“When did you hear me laugh?” Kane asked.
“I was going to the bathroom, and I knew she had accidentally ended up in your bedroom. You didn’t kick her out, then she made you laugh. Only I can make you laugh.”
“Are you upset she made me laugh?” Kane asked. Olivia shook her head,
“No I’m not upset. I just want you happy, even if it’s with my new friend.”
“Look I don’t think Roselyn is able to deal with a guy like me.”
“Kane, I don’t think you realize. Rose has a lot of pain inside of her.” Kane felt anger rise up,
“What do you mean?”
“I don’t know, she hasn’t talked about it. All I know is she has nightmares every night.” Olivia explained, and Kane felt pain.
“Kane, not everyone is as they appear. You should know that better than anyone.” Olivia gave him that gem of wisdom before hugging him, and leaving for her next class.
Olivia was right, Kane had no idea what Roselyn’s life was like. However, that doesn’t mean that he was the right guy for her.
