LUCIENS POV: The weekend went off great, Cami was happy, and so excited for next weekends, the moms and Jackie had formed sort of a plan when the girls were picked up that they would have a routine. Each mom will take a weekend. I was enjoying a side of Jackie, one that I didn't think I could ever imagine her being. She was so good with my daughter, she played with her, taught her new things, taught her how to match and dress. Honestly, I didn't see a problem with long socks and a skirt, it wasn't until the night of that I asked, and she said that while it didn't fit, it also gave bed men the idea of little girls in uniform. I almost slammed my fist through a wall. "Besides, when she gets older, she can dress like that when she likes a boy her age-" She had tried to calm me down but all it did was make me wanna put my daughter in a catholic school, with no boys. Ever. I seethed and had trouble going to sleep until she reminded me how far off Cami was from finding any boy cute or attractive. Still gave me a sour stomach the next day. I brought it up to Razor too, and he told me when she gets to that point, he gets to pick her up at school occasionally. That way any boy who was brave enough would at least have big balls. I damn there knocked his teeth in when he started laughing. Now it was Wednesday, I had a couple cars lined up for tires, and oil, and one that I had to figure out which part in the engine was making the engine light come on. It was a full day and I would probably have to bring Cami back with me and let Jackie stay open later than she has in a while. I was halfway through adding new oil into a BMW when someone shouted for me. "I'm busy!" I shouted back and tried not to focus on what someone was saying. Then I heard Cami's name. "Alright." I shouted back and set the oil down before going for a rag. I wiped my hands as I walked to the front desk and nodded to Todd who was trying to get the hang of the receptionist job. "They said it was your daughter Cami's school." He told me and I nodded and picked up the phone. "This is Lucien." I answered and moved to listen carefully. Hoping more than anything Cami hadn't gotten hurt. "Hello, this is Cami's teacher Noelle Rolland. I am calling to tell you she has gotten into trouble. She and another kid got into a fight and we are sure the other girls' nose is broken. The principal had decided to suspend her for the rest of the week-" "I can't take that much time off-" "I'm sorry Mr. Daniels. The other parents insisted over the phone. I don't know if you could come right away, but the other parents seem very livid and I am a little worried something might be done-" "I am about 45 minutes away..." I tried to think of something before Jackie’s face just popped into my head. "My girlfriend, she lives with me and Cami. Can she come and get her? She is really close by." "I think that would be okay, we will need to check her ID and have her full name from you." I heard Ms. Rolland scramble on the other end as I gave her Jackie's full name. "I will have to call her and tell her to head there, she owns the café up the street so she will be there really quick." What the f**k. Cami had never hit another person. Ever. Why now? I closed my eyes before dialing the café and I wondered what would happen now. JACKIE'S POV I heard the words, but I couldn't really wrap my head around the fact that Cami broke another girls nose. "Yeah, I will be there soon. I will bring her back to the café with me until you're done." I told him and he sighed. "I have a full day. I need someone to cover-" "Don't worry Lucien. She can stay with me all day. At least until you’re done." I told him knowing he had to be a parent and have a sit-down talk with her. "Are you sure?" He asked and I hummed. "I am not teaching anyone today; I'm mostly going to be alone anyway. She can sit at a table with the guard you place on me and do something for school." I told him and moved to grab my purse and made sure my wallet was inside, though I hadn't taken it out in some time. "Thank you." "If it was my kid, I would ask you the same. Don't thank me. Plus... I might be able to get her to tell me why she did it before you could. Some kids like opening up to anyone who isn't there parent." I told him and moved towards the front of close for 10 minutes. I taped the sign up inside and locked up before heading out. The guard on me was a nice older man, Johnny. He said he would pick a spot where he could see me walk there and walk back with Cami before coming to join us in the café. I walked all the way down the street before going in through the front doors and looking around for signs of the office. I saw the sign closer to the end of the hallway, so I jogged towards the door and peeked in and saw a woman sitting next to Cami while hearing two people screaming about their son. "Jackie." Cami waved and I saw her look a little ready for a scolding and I just smiled at her. "Hi, I am Ms. Rolland, or Noelle, Cami's teacher." The woman and Cami stood up and she extended a hand. "I am Jackie Oswald." I shook her hand and moved right away to get my wallet out. "Lucien said you would need to check names." I offered her my ID and she took it and lifted the paper she had written down before nodding. "And for future reasons, we are obligated to give you this, for Lucien to fill out, just in case there is another incident, or she gets sick. You need to be on a release form." She gave me a printout and I nodded not knowing if I would have to do this again but willing to. I did the paperwork of signing off on her suspension and she got her things together before we left peacefully, which is what I could tell the teacher really wanted. The parents of the other kid were still shouting, asking when they would get to talk to the little girl’s parents. We made our escape and I held her hand all the way back to the café in silence. Pushing open the door and taking the sign off before walking her into the back. "Are you mad?" She asked me and I looked at her and shook my head before smiling softly. "Is my daddy mad?" "He mostly wants to know why." I told her and she sighed and sniffled once as she took out paper to draw on. I walked back with her into the empty café and set her at a table close to the door. "You can relax here. I told your dad that I would take care of you until he is off of work, and then he will come okay? He's not on his way right now." I told her and rubbed her shoulder. "Does your hand hurt?" I asked her, wondering if she had any kind of pain. "No. I kept my thumb out." She showed me how she hit the boy and I nodded.  "Do you want to tell me what happened so I can tell your dad before he comes? He might be less mad that way." I offered out knowing my father was livid whenever I got in trouble but if I had to wait for him, he was usually calmer. "He was making fun of me. Pulling my hair. Calling me names." She sniffled again and I pulled out some napkins from my apron. "What kind of names?" I asked softly knowing that if they were mean I would totally understand. "He called me an unwanted kid. Said I didn't have a mommy because she didn't love me." She rubbed her face with the tissue, and I felt my heart break at the words. "And then I told him that I had you, and I said you were a replacement mommy and he laughed at me. Told me I was stupid for thinking you would stay forever." She cried and I saw the big tears coming so I moved around until I was hugging her. "It's okay." I rubbed her back and I tried to get her mind off it by encouraging her to come into the back with me to make something sweet. I messaged Lucien to not be too mad because the little BOY was mean to her and making fun of her. I told him that I thought, while hitting wasn't the solution, it did seem sort of fair. He told me a couple hours later that he was calm, and he wanted to hear about it from her. I told him she was still upset and really tired and he was on his way soon enough after that. I got her things all picked up and cleared and we walked out front when he pulled up. I locked everything up and watched as she got in the car herself and I got in the front. "Daddy..." "Wait until we're home Camille." He told her in a soft tone, but I could tell she was still going to be in trouble. It was a silent ride and the closer we got to the house the closer I shifted my hand into Lucien's and moved to hold it. He might be mad, but I could tell Cami would need her 'daddy' and not a father tonight. We got into the house and Cami set her things down in order while Lucien went to sit down, and she followed him into the kitchen. I walked in and started to make dinner. I could hear her recount of the words, and when she started to cry Lucien broke his demeanor and pulled her into his arms and across his lap. "You know what you tell little mean boys?" Lucien asked her and she shook her head. I paused my hands and looked over to them. "You tell them that even though your mommy left, she left you with the best daddy ever. You get all the toys you want; you get all the pizza you want; you are my angel. You don't need a mommy." He told her and gave her a kiss. I didn't know how to feel about that but when she thanked him and hugged him tight, I could tell she wouldn't ask what I was going to be, and I was grateful. I didn't know how to navigate that whole thing. "Go get changed into comfy clothes. You're going to be with me at the shop for the rest of the week." "I can close the café." I told him after she was gone, and he turned to me and looked surprised. "What?" "You would close the café? To hang out with a little girl who beats up little boys?" He asked, standing and I just nodded and shrugged.  "Why not, we can get stuff for thanksgiving." I told him and he seemed confused at that part. "Did I not tell you what we do for thanksgiving around here?" He asked me and I shook my head. "We go to the club house." He told me and I didn't get that part. "So, we can't bring a pie?" I asked and he laughed. "We eat anything Razor gets for thanksgiving." He told me and I paused for a long time. "Jackie?" "Like no turkey?" I asked and he smiled and shook his head. "No." I shook my head at him, and he laughed. "We will have turkey and ham." I told him and he seemed confused. "And mashed potatoes, and fresh cranberry sauce." I told him and he looked shocked. "Who is going to help you cook all that?" "Oh please, you're looking at a woman who made her first 45-pound turkey at 13. I fed my brother, my father, and like 13 other military men my dad invited over." I told him and waved my hand at the thought of not being able to pull this off for the men who were so nice and protective of me. It was a thank you really, a giant thank you on Thanksgiving. And I would try and find out what kind of desserts and snacks to make. Yeah. I could do this. With Cami by my side. Bring on Thanksgiving.
