Chapter Four

Bain: I was in the treetops when she came out waving a pistol into Saint's cocky alpha face. I bit my lip to keep from laughing about it. She couldn't be more than five foot six and was ready to go toe to toe with two massive wolves with that little thing. The wind picked up, carrying her scent to me. My mouth watered at the tender sweetness of it. Saint smells masculine and rough. Earthy even… don't get me wrong, it smells delicious. But this… this is intoxicating. I couldn't help but wonder what a little human was doing in this territory. This is the place where nightmares go bump in the night. There may be five humans in this town, none living this close to the Diathorne kingdom. I shook the thought. It doesn't matter what she is running from. She is just lucky it isn't me. I missed whatever she was yelling at Saint about. I almost burst out laughing when Saint nodded at whatever she had said. She got so f****d up over it. Her blue eyes widened, then she turned on her heels, running back into the shitty little farmhouse with her heart beating in her ears. "You were right. The fluctuation here is increasing. I don't know what the house is doing. But the big bad monster you have me scoping out here is a small human woman." I laughed out loud this time. Saint bared his teeth at me as if that would phase me. He is a f*****g baby toward me. "Stay here, Bain. Please. Something is up, and you're the only one that can figure it out." He mind-linked me, and then he and his beta ran back toward the pack house. This farm is the last driveway before the entire Diathorne territory. Only one small corner of that house is settled onto the kingdom's pack lands, but that is enough to keep her under the protection of Diathorne's law. But that also makes her a part of the kingdom... there has never been a human accepted by the Cooper farm, so what is special about this one? I sighed, settling with my back pressed into the tree's bark. I leaned my head against the tree, closing my eyes as sleep threatened to take me. It wasn't until the front door shut and locked that I woke up from the nap I had let myself fall victim to without realizing it. The human was dressed warmly to the nines and made her way down the long driveway into town. I quietly used my power to bridge the treetops. The frost from my blasts caused shards of icy snow to settle in her blonde hair. My feet almost slid out from underneath me when she looked up, eyes closed to the setting sun. Slowly the breath that had hitched in my throat released. Just because my white hair blends in with the snowy treetops. The black t-shirt that's stretched over my chest gives me away completely. I relaxed only when she opened her mouth and let her tongue catch the aftermath of my magic. I stilled in my movement in awe of how beautiful she looked… it had been a long time since even I could find joy in my magic. Her melodic chuckle broke me from the trance the human had placed on me. Her joy urged me to make her happier, and with her slowly spinning in the snow, still catching the flakes of my magic on her tongue. I twirled my index finger smiling when fragile snow fell from the trees. I held my hand out, palm up, creating a snowflake just for her. Then, with a gentle blow, I sent it to her. She saw it the moment it glistened in the falling sun, and when it landed in her hand, she carefully traced the delicate pattern of its fragile branches. I thought I had already been in awe of her, but the moment one word left her mouth, a warmth spread through my chest. I had found a new hobby. Pleasing the human girl my mate had sent me to babysit. "Wow." She whispered in awe of something I had created, she was in awe of the magic I had grown long tired of wielding and something about the way her warm breath fogged the chilled air, or maybe it was the way her little nose was red with cold… or perhaps it was the way her fingers had been so tender, treating that one snowflake with such reverence. Either way, she had sparked something within me… Something that left me longing for more. Rowan: I will never tire of the beauty in this place. Just when I think I am sick of the snow and cold, a gentle breeze will blow, letting a dust of fresh powder fly from the sky. In the sun, it feels like mother nature has thrown glitter in your face, and it is just so… perfect. Finally, I graced the steps of Lucid and was thankful things were still quiet. It will just be three of us running the bar tonight, so it should be an easy night for all of us. I stripped my clothes off and tucked my crap into my locker. The bass started bumping into the floor when I laced my boots back up. So, I quickly went out to see Cynthiana and Droll filling drink orders. I jumped in, grabbing four beers for a girl at the bar. "Could I get a Crown and Coke, please?" At that moment, I looked into the eyes of a God. Righteous and mighty… His muscles strained against the T-shirt that I was sure contained the wings of a fallen angel tucked tightly at his back. The dancing crowd melted away, leaving only the two of us in a shrouded existence. "Here you go, man. Hang around. I'll get a break soon." Droll slipped the stranger his drink, but even their interactions weren't enough to pull me from the stupor his lusty eyes had trapped me in. It wasn't until Cynthiana called my name did our stare-down finally ended. "Heads up, Row!" she called out, sliding three bottles of beer to me that the guys in front of me had asked for. I snatched them as they slid the entire length of the bar top, cracked each one, and collected their money as I fought the urge to take one more look at the stranger sipping a Crown and Coke in my section of the bar.
