Saint:
"Tell me. Is it possible I was wrong?" I had been in emotional shambles since the human stepped outside the Cooper house. I am more than positive that Bain is my mate. So why do I feel that same pull, the same hunger and need for the human that I have for him?
"Maybe you should talk to Bain. He may have those same feelings for the girl you are." Gatlin's words had me rolling my eyes.
"Gat, Bain doesn't even feel our mate bond. What would lead you to believe he would feel one with her?" I rubbed the stress from my eyes, growling out. This is insane. I've never heard of an alpha having more than one mate, never mind two. Not to mention two that aren't wolves.
"Bain may tell you he doesn't feel a bond with you, but Droll and I know he is lying. Hell, he told Droll he felt it and that he claimed not to feel it because neither of you is ready to be exclusive to the other. Maybe that is why the two of you have been gifted a third mate." Gatlin looked like he had a realization. But he had only spoken aloud about something I had already thought of.
"I gotta go. Think about it." Gatlin said, slapping me on the shoulder.
"I need to talk to you. Where are you?" I waited impatiently as I waited for him to answer the link, only possible because of our bond.
"Babysitting the girl. She is on shift at Lucid." I knew Bain was still mad at me from the irritation in his tone.
"Be there in thirty." I tried to match his irritation, but truthfully. I was excited. What if Gatlin was right? What if Bain confirms that he feels that bond with the girl too? Then what? The suspense of my ever-growing questions hummed on my skin like a downed power line, and the closer to Lucid I got, the more excited I became.
Bain:
The way she would catch herself getting lost in the beat and shaking her hips made me smile. She would realize she was dancing, and then her face would ignite in a hot pink, and she would stop in her tracks before continuing her work at the bar. The last time she caught me staring and how her hand tucked the hair behind her ear had my mouth watering. Then guilt pummeled me when Saint took the stool next to me.
"What did you want to talk about?" The Crown Royal clouding my judgment made me sound eager for his attention.
"Us." I turned to face him with a grin at how his eyes roamed my body.
"What about us?" I asked, trying not to seem intrigued.
His eyes glazed over. He was in a mind link with someone. It is challenging being the ruler of Diathorne. The other kingdoms despise us for our size and numbers and live to cause trouble. The annual meeting of Kings is coming, and I know when it does, it will be the same s**t as every other year. The others feel Diathorne should split the land so that all four kingdoms are equal, but Saint would rather die than give up something he worked so hard for.
"Fuck." He looked at me through eyes that were full of frustration and chaos. I reached out, gripping his thigh under the bar. I had to fight the urge to smile when his whole body seemed to react to my slight touch.
"Whatever it is, we will get through it." I squeezed his leg before pulling back and getting the human girl's attention.
"Two more of these, please." I shook the glass at her. She only nodded, but the way her face flushed told Saint and I the same thing. She is far too innocent for this place.
"Anything else?" She asked in a customer service-type voice with a forced smile. She is uncomfortable around us. Or maybe she feels the same overwhelming urge to reach out and touch. I have been carrying the same desire since I watched her pink tongue catch my snowflakes.
"No. Thank you, little one." I smiled at her, watching her swallow hard before licking her sweet lips. She nodded again but never walked away.
"Are you two ass wipes bothering my girl?" Cynthiana walked up, throwing an arm around the human. I really need to learn her name.
"No! He has been a perfect gentleman. Very well mannered." She answered Cynthiana's question for us.
"Good. I would hate to tell Auntie Francis you two were causing trouble." At the mention of Saint's mother, we both drank the Crown and Coke that somehow tasted better, knowing the human made it.
"No need for that, Cynthiana." Saint smiled sweetly at his first cousin and Beta.
"Good. Besides, I have been training Rowan here for the last few months, and I have to say, I think she could take both of you." Cynthiana chuckled when Rowan became flustered because of Cynthiana's challenge.
"Hm. This is the girl you have been training on the side?" Saint asked, eyeing Rowan up and down the same way I had since I had been here. This is one girl he will not have before me.
"Mhmm." Cynthiana pulled her bottom lip between her teeth, nodding. f**k. Are all three of us after the girl?
"Row, little help?" Gatlin yelled, bringing in some more glasses. She untangled herself from Cynthiana's arm and headed off without a second glance in our direction.
"She is cute, huh?" Cynthiana asked, leaning on the bar, watching the same round ass walk away that Saint and I were both staring at. Saint looked at me, waiting for me to answer. For some reason, my palms started sweating, and my nerves got the better of me.
"She's cute." I shrugged.
"Yeah. Cute." Saint said, watching her laugh with Droll about goddess only knows what.
Things started picking back up. Everyone was busy, and Saint and I were drunk. Neither of us wanted to tap out and leave Rowan alone at the bar.
"Row, wanna do last call?" Droll called out, grabbing her a microphone from the back. She nodded excitedly, climbing onto the bar before Saint and me. Even with Crown rolling off my lips and Saint's scent pulling me closer to him, her scent wafted in the mix, creating an inferno of need in my chest.
"Listen up. You got five minutes to get the f**k out!" She yelled over the intercom. I laughed, having never heard the last call be made like that.
"YES!" Cynthiana clapped for her, and Droll just laughed with me. On the other hand, Saint watched her like a starving lion stalking a gazelle.
"I'm following her home." I told him through our mate link. He only nodded.
"Wanna talk about anything?" I asked. My curiosity was getting the better of me, and I was dying to know why he looked at her the way he looked at me. Does he feel it too? When he shook his head no at my offer, I decided to find the time to get to the bottom of whatever was bothering him the first chance I got to have him alone.
