Chapter 7: Routine

1713 Words
FOR the next few days, my routine stayed the same. I woke up early in the morning, cleaned the house, prepared breakfast, and took care of baby Cass. I don’t cook food for lunch anymore, and just eat whatever is leftover from breakfast. Ms. Vera doesn’t come home in time for dinner everyday, but I still make sure there’s food available when she comes home. Ms. Vera still brings home different men every now and then, but I only know because I usually have to serve them food at breakfast. Some of them have made passes at me so I stay away from these men as much as possible. Honestly, they scare me, especially when I imagine what they have been doing with Ms. Vera. Some of the men have visited more than once, but Ms. Vera’s most frequent visitor was the guy I saw her having s*x with on the dining table on my second day of work. I’ve learned that his name is Mike, and he’s tried to make a pass and even touch me more than once. I’ve contemplated telling Ms. Vera about it, but she might not believe me, and even get mad at me. I decided to just stay quiet about it and avoid Mike as much as possible. I still get groceries every week and I didn’t run into Jax again. One day, I was on my way home and was waiting for the elevator door to open while holding my groceries. I found Jax making out with a woman I didn't recognize when the door opened. I got in and stayed near the door and as far away as I could from them. I tried not to look at the couple, but when I glanced at the door that shows the reflection of everyone inside the lift, I saw Jax’ eyes on me while he’s kissing that girl. I looked away immediately and pretended like I didn’t see anything. I couldn’t still hear their moans and the sound of their mouths while they were lapping at each other’s faces. When the door opened, I couldn’t get out fast enough. What is wrong with the people in this building? They all seemed so promiscuous and horny all the time. When I got to the apartment, I found baby Cass in the living room with food all over her. She was crying and I could hear shouting inside Ms. Vera’s bedroom. I picked up Cass and cleaned her up right away. I shielded the baby when Ms. Vera and the man got out of the bedroom still arguing. I could see some marks on Ms. Vera’s face. It looked like the man actually hit her. Before the man left, he called Ms. Veraa bunch of insulting names and referred to her as a wh*re. This made her incredibly mad she started throwing things at him. Baby Cass started crying and I held her tight and took her to her room. I sang to the baby while I carried her and tried to calm her down. She calmed down since she couldn’t hear the shouting outside anymore. I hope Ms. Vera is okay. I wanted to check on her, but right now, I have to take care of baby Cass first. After the baby had gone to sleep, I put her down on her crib and checked on her diapers. She didn’t need changing yet, so when I was sure she’s fully asleep, I got out of her room to check on Ms. Vera. I found her lying down while crying in the living room. I approached her and said “M-Ms. Vera, are you okay?” She looked at me and I noticed she had bruises and tears on her face. The man must have hurt her. I kneeled down next to her but she pushed me away and said “Don’t you dare tell my mom about this! This is none of your business!” Luisa: “I wasn’t going to tell her, miss. I was just worried. Let me get the first aid kit.” I had her sit on the couch as I got the first aid kit from the bathroom. I applied antiseptic on some of her wounds. I wasn’t really sure if I’m doing the right thing but I hope I am making her feel better. Luisa: “Do you want anything, miss?” Ms. Vera: “How’s the baby?” Luisa: “She’s okay. She’s asleep now.” Ms. Vera: “I’m just going to take some rest. Can you please clean up here?” Luisa: “Okay, miss.” She refused my help and got inside the bedroom herself. For the first time, she actually talked to me without screaming, and she even said please. There were a few broken pieces from whatever Ms. Vera threw at the man earlier, and I didn’t even mind when I got cut with one of the pieces. I just put a band aid on it. When I was done cleaning, I put away the groceries and prepared what I needed for lunch. I decided to make pork sinigang (pork boiled in sour soup with vegetables). When I was sick, my mom always cooks something with hot soup and it makes me feel better once I’ve eaten it. While waiting for the pork to tenderize, I checked on baby Cass and found that she’s already awake. I cleaned her up, changed her diapers and changed her into fresh onesies. I carried her to the living room and gave her some toys to play with as I checked on the pork. When the food was done cooking, I set the table and prepared the baby’s food. I was done feeding Cass but Ms. Vera still hasn’t come out of her bedroom. I figured I should wake her up but I was afraid she might get mad at me again. I decided to bathe the baby and changed her into fresh clothes. I was playing with her when Ms. Vera came out of her bedroom. She looked disheveled and it looked like she didn’t even wash her face or fix her hair. I didn’t say anything and put the baby down as I removed the lid on the food that I'd prepared on the table. I also brought a pitcher of water and poured some on Ms. Vera’s glass. I didn't say anything and I was surprised when Ms. Vera asked if I hadn’t eaten already. I wasn’t able to answer right away, but after a few seconds, I said “Not yet, miss. I’ll eat later when you’re done.” Ms. Vera: “Okay.” Luisa: “Do you need anything else, miss?” Ms. Vera: “No, I’m fine.” I went to play with Cass once more. I’m so thankful that kids are resilient at this age. Hopefully, she wouldn’t have memories of what happened earlier. I wouldn’t want this precious little angel to be traumatized. When Ms. Vera was done eating, she just looked at me and baby Cass before heading back to her bedroom. I put the baby to sleep before eating lunch myself and cleaning up in the kitchen. It’s already 3 pm and I have been hungry for hours but I’ve always made it a point to eat only after Ms. Vera is done. She’s usually not at home for lunch, so I usually get to eat earlier than this. I just ate as much as I could, since I cooked more than enough to last until dinner anyway. I don’t think Ms. Vera will have any male guests who will be eating with us tonight, so I can eat to my heart’s content. ------------------------------------ Ms. Vera stayed at home for the next few days. I was afraid he might inadvertently get mad at me again, but she has barely spoken to me, and she does, she has spoken to me in a soft voice. In fact, she mostly stayed in her bedroom and just got out when she needed to eat. When she finally decided to get out of the house, she’s wearing workout clothes. She’s probably going to the gym. She said she’ll be back for lunch and for the first time in days, she kissed baby Cass before leaving. I have been wondering what Ms. Vera’s job is, but after almost a month of working for her, I have deduced that she probably doesn’t work. She comes and goes any time and any day she wants and most of the time, she comes home intoxicated. I wonder where she gets her spending money, though. I hoped that she would stop bringing men into the home. The last one hurt her physically. The next one might cause her more damage. It was late at night when Ms. Vera arrived and I heard a man’s voice when she came in. I just got out of the bathroom and was getting ready to sleep and I immediately went inside my room. I was able to go to sleep as soon as my body hit the bed. I woke up feeling thirsty so I got up and went to the kitchen. I didn’t bother turning on the lights. I almost dropped my glass when I turned around and saw a man leaning on the counter drinking water as well. I couldn’t help but look at his almost naked body. He wasn’t wearing anything but boxers. When he said “So, this is where you live,” I immediately recognized the voice. It’s Jax, the elevator man.
