Chapter 1: Moving To The City
❤ Luisa’s POV ❤ AS I packed my bags, I was filled with different emotions. I’m about to move away from the place I’ve called home for the past 19 years of my life. I have been working as a maid for the Madrid family, who is the richest in our town. A few weeks ago, their daughter called saying that she needs a nanny to take care of her daughter. Apparently, she’s a single mom with a one year old kid. It seems that her nanny has resigned and since she needs to work, she needs a replacement right away. She said that she didn’t have time to hire or interview a replacement but wanted someone she could trust, so she asked help from her mom. When she heard about it, Mrs. Torreblanca recommended me to her and when her daughter agreed, she decided to talk to me about the offer. I was hesitant to take the job because I’ve never been away from home and I don’t know if I could handle it. After hearing that I would only have to take care of the kid and that I would be getting paid more, I decided to grab the chance before Mrs. Torreblanca  decided to recommend someone else to work for her daughter. My Aunt was hesitant to let me go, but I convinced her that it’s a rare opportunity and that the extra income would be very helpful to our family. I have two younger cousins who are still in school, and my Uncle’s earnings as a farmer is not enough to support the whole family. My Aunt is my mom’s sister, and they never knew who my dad was. They said that he left her when he found out that she was pregnant. My mom died giving birth to me so my Aunt took me in and raised me as her own. I never knew my mom, but considered my Aunt and her husband as my parents. I even call them mom and dad. Since I started working, I started saving up some of my salary so I could study and get a better job in the future. I don’t really plan on working as a maid or a nanny for the rest of my life. I’m still young, and I have dreams. I intend to work towards achieving that dream someday. I didn’t have a lot of clothes or stuff to bring so I was able to finish packing. My mom called me to dinner and I sat at the table where my entire family was already seated. My mom prepared a sumptuous meal of vegetables and fish. It’s modest compared to others, but for us, this meal is like a feast. We enjoyed eating together as my mom started asking questions about my new employer. Mom: “So, what do you know about your new boss? Is she kind?” Luisa: “I’m sure she’s kind. Mr. and Mrs. Torreblanca  are very nice people and they treat all their employees pretty well.” Mom: “That’s a relief. Make sure to always keep in touch, okay? If you’re having a hard time, you can always come back here.” Luisa: “Don’t worry mom. I’ll be fine. I will only be taking care of Ms. Vera’s daughter. In the mansion, I clean and cook sometimes. The workload will be significantly less, but the pay is much higher.” Mom: “Living in the city would be much harder than living here in the province. There are opportunistic people there. You should be careful.” Luisa: “I will. I probably won’t be leaving the house that much, anyway. The kid’s one year old, so I will probably only have to accompany her and feed at home the whole time.” Mom: “I’m going to miss you, honey.” Luisa: “I will miss you all too. I’ll make sure to always call, or at least send a message whenever I can.” We resumed eating and I helped my mom clean up when we were done. Before I went to bed, she hugged me without saying anything. I felt what she wanted to tell me without talking, though. I couldn’t sleep as I felt nervous and excited at the same time. I will be riding a plane for the first time in my life. Mrs. Torreblanca arranged to have someone drive me to the airport and I’m very thankful for that. She also gave me a one month advance on my salary and I left some of it to my family. I kept some for living expenses, and put the rest in my savings. Since I’m a live-in nanny, I assume I won’t have to worry about food. I won’t really have much to spend money on, so hopefully, I’ll be able to increase my savings more. I am excited at the prospect of getting closer to my dream. I was even hoping to take some classes when I get to the city. With the light workload, I should have time to take night classes and still be able to take care of Ms. Vera’s kid. I hope Ms. Vera will be amenable to it. I fell asleep about five hours before I had to wake up. I should have slept longer, but the excitement kept me awake longer than it should have. I was ready an hour before the driver picked me up. I’ve never been to the airport nor have I seen an airplane before, so I couldn’t help but gasp as I made my way into the terminal. I was thankful that Mrs. Torreblanca taught me how to check in and what else I needed to do when I got to the airport. My flight is in less than two hours, so I had a lot of time to kill before getting on the plane. I was anticipating this, so I brought a book to read. The first time I cleaned the library at the Madrid family mansion, I got intrigued with how many books there are. I was reading the synopsis and got engrossed. I dropped the book when Mrs. Torreblanca called my name. Mrs. Torreblanca: “What are you doing?” Luisa: “I’m sorry, ma’am. I was dusting the book shelves and was just reading the synopsis. It will never happen again.” Mrs. Torreblanca: “Did you like it?” Luisa: “I’m sorry?” Mrs. Torreblanca: “Little Women. Did you like what you’ve read so far?” Luisa: “I did. The story seems interesting.” Mrs. Torreblanca: “Take it.” Luisa: “What do you mean, ma’am.” Mrs. Torreblanca: “You can take the book home if you want to read it. When you’re done with that, you can borrow other books which might interest you.” Luisa: “Really? Thank you so much, ma’am.” Mrs. Torreblanca: “I love reading books. Too bad my daughter didn’t take after me.” From then on, I have been obsessed with reading books. In a span of a year, I have read at least 50 books from Mrs. Torreblanca's library. If I didn’t have to work, I would probably have read more. Reading all the books made me want to become a writer. I wouldn’t mind teaching literature as well. It would be great to talk about the books from the different authors I have read. Today, I’m reading Pride and Prejudice. I’ve read it before, and it’s one of my favorites. It’s one of the books I decided to bring when Mrs. Torreblanca told me to pick some books I’d like to take with me. I got a total of 10 books, all classics. I was halfway through the book when I heard the announcement that the plane bound to Manila is now boarding. I fixed my stuff and headed to where I was supposed to go. I made sure that I had my boarding pass and the plane ticket in my hand. As I took my seat, I watched my seatmate put on her seatbelt and mimicked what she did. I celebrated silently as I was able to successfully do it on the first try. I was so thankful to get a window seat. For the duration of the plane ride, I kept looking outside the window. I was glad when they served the in-flight snack too. I was already getting hungry since it’s almost lunch time. Due to my excitement, I didn’t get to eat a lot during breakfast. I didn’t take off my seatbelt for the duration of the flight because I wasn’t sure that I might not be able to put it back on when I needed to. It seems like I had the right idea as I heard the announcement to put on the seatbelt as we are about to begin our descent. I got scared when we took off earlier and I braced myself for the landing. Thankfully, we landed successfully. Mrs. Torreblanca  said that her daughter will be picking me up and will be waiting for me outside the terminal when I land. She showed me a picture of her and I was awed with how beautiful she is. As soon as I got my bag from the carousel, I headed outside. I couldn't help but smile in amusement at seeing the other bags go around. It made me want to get on it, but I didn’t want people to think that I’m crazy. Mrs. Torreblanca  gave me a suitcase bad to use as well. I was thankful because I didn’t have any of mine to use. I waited outside the terminal gate for Ms. Vera. I couldn’t see her from the throng of people waiting for the other passengers. I figured she must not have arrived yet, so I waited. After an hour, the crowd had thinned out, but I still couldn’t see a sign of Ms. Vera. I’m starting to get worried as I have no idea where to go. I don’t have her address since Mrs. Torreblanca told me that her daughter would be picking me up at the airport  when I arrived. Two hours have passed and there’s still no sign of Ms. Vera. I decided to send a message to Mrs. Torreblanca and asked for her daughter’s address. She sent me her daughter’s address and called me after. When she found out that her daughter wasn’t there to pick me up, she sighed and told me to just take a cab and ask her daughter to reimburse me for it. She apologized on behalf of her daughter, and I told her it’s okay. I asked the guard where I could get a cab and nervously made my way towards the terminal.
